Appointed
“Characterize people by their actions and you will never be fooled by their words.”
"Are you two hundred percent sure it was him?" Kat asked the same question for the tenth time, and I narrowed my eyes at her.
"Yes, Kat. I'm definitely sure." Rolling my eyes at her as I thought even if I hadn't heard his name, I'd still recognize those alluring eyes anywhere. Whenever my situation got worse, it would be his face that would appear in front of my eyes, telling me that Karma was definitely biting my ass off.
"I’m not getting the job, right?" I sighed, eating the last slice of pizza left.
"Lying is against my morals, darling." She said, amusement dancing in her eyes, but as she looked at my face, Kat got equally worried.
Kat has always been my constant support since the day I met her, and I can't pay her back, at least not in this lifetime. But now, I desperately need a job. To regain my self-respect, and my personality, and to be independent.
"Eve, look at me," she said, and I looked at her. "You'll be fine. If you don't get this job, maybe you're not the one for it. Now come on, let's watch a movie."
"Always with philosophy, huh?"
"Only for you." Giving me her cheeky smile, she turned the TV on. A criminal-case episode was playing on the TV, which Kat was seriously in love with. As she got comfortable on the couch, I brought two cans of soft drinks from the kitchen and passed one to her.
Trying my best to focus my concentration on the screen, my mind kept diverting towards Xavier Knight. The clenching of his jaw, the hatred in his eyes, everything played in front of my eyes, and it pained me as I felt like drowning in guilt.
A saccade string of continuous ringing broke the chain of my thoughts and literally harassed Kat's ears as she gave me her best death glare. Exhausted, I dragged myself out of the living room and pulled out my phone from my pocket to answer it.
"Is this Miss Williams?" A feminine voice said from the other side. My mind automatically wandered toward Walker Industries, and I prepared myself for rejection.
"Yes, it's Evelyn Williams," I replied.
"Miss Williams, I'm hereby to inform you that you're being appointed as the personal assistant of Mr. Knight. Your presence is expected to be here on Monday at sharp 8 AM." She informed me that, without waiting for my answer, the call got disconnected.
I heard the opening of the door to my room as Kat's voice reached my ears, but my body didn't move, I just kept staring at my phone.
"Hey, you, okay? What happened?" Kat asked me when she noticed my frozen state.
"I got the call from Walker Industries…" I informed her without any expression on my face.
Her face turned more worried at the mention, "Don't worry, Eve. You'll find another job. It's fine." She said, walking towards me and attempting to embrace me.
"I got the job," I whispered to which her eyes widened. A full-blown smile appeared on her face and her excitement was on another level as she jumped toward me, enveloping me in a tight hug.
"Oh my god! You got the job!" She exclaimed in joy.
Though Kat looked very happy, I couldn't help but feel worried. Despite everything he offered me the job, and I was unable to figure out why.
Wondering if maybe it was revenge for my sinful actions or if there was any other motive in his mind.
Wait, wait!
The lady said I was being appointed as the personal secretary of Mr. Knight, not Mr. Walker, Mr. Knight!
"What happened? Aren't you happy?" Kat asked, moving away from me a little as she saw my worried face.
"Kat, the lady said, I'm appointed as the personal secretary of Mr. Knight, not Mr. Walker," I spoke.
"So, where's the pro-" And everything got processed in her mind. "Oh fuck! Why would he do that?"
"As if I know."
Maybe I should reject the offer, I don't want to get indulged in everything that I left five years ago.
Maybe…
"Listen, Evelyn Rose Williams," Kat yelled, "For once, please stop thinking, and nothing will go wrong. You're a fighter and you'll get through this. And don't you dare think of dropping this offer?"
"My sweet Kat always knows her ways with her words," I said, and she chuckled.
"Only for you darling, only for you."
Maybe everything will turn out just fine.
