Chapter 121 Norton's Mind
"Daddy, do I go to school with my brother?"
Norton's look at Bert is also expectant.
In recent years, Bert's education had been family-style, one with a teacher, one with other children, and he didn't know what it was like.
Bert smiled. "In a few days," he said, "you'll be in kindergarten."
Norton and Sophie almost flew with excitement at this.
And danced beside Bert.
Bane watched the scene with some disappointment, for it seemed to her that Bert did not bother much at all to keep the children happy.
In the evening, Sophie walks over to Bane's room and says she's going to sleep with her mother. Norton follows her, his little face full of anticipation. No one can soften their hearts in the presence of such a sweet child.
Bane, of course, consented to the children's request, and she did not see the dangerous look in Bert's eyes.
That look seems to say: I'll let you off the hook today.
Sophie and Norton soon wash, change into pajamas, and go to Bane's room.
Norton is visibly distraught, and Sophie is unperturbed. Norton's hands are clenched together, his eyes full of uneasiness.
Bane feels a little pained to see Norton, then slaps his side and says, "Norton, come sit here."
Norton hesitates, but still sits there.
Such close contact with the mother, or very few, he has always been independent, have developed a habit, but he and Bane blood, let him can not help but want to be close to Bane.
Sophie quickly climbed back up, took her brother by the hand, and called, "Brother, you too!"
Norton sits on the right of Bane, and Sophie sits on the left of him. Norton does not let go at first, but after a while, Norton starts rubbing his face against his mother's hand.
Pressing Norton on the cheek, Bane asks, "Did Norton sleep alone when he was a child?"
Norton smiles. "Yeah."
"My brother is so powerful."
After complimenting Norton, Sophie grabs her mother's arm and calls out, "Mom, can you tell us a story?"
"Sure. Which story does Sophie want?"
"Mom, you haven't finished your story about the Princess and the Dragon!"
Bane smiled and nodded, opened the storybook, and began to tell the story with great emotion.
Sophie and Norton, left and right, listened attentively to the story.
Before long, Bane's left arm was under pressure, and Sophie had closed her eyes, apparently asleep.
Bane shook his head resignedly.Sophie loved to listen to stories before she went to bed, but she always fell asleep after a short while, so it took many nights to finish a single story.
Bane picked Sophie up, put her away, and gently pulled the covers over her.
"Mom, is my sister asleep?"
Norton leans his head closer and glances at his sister.
"Yeah, Norton, are you still up?"
"Mother, I want to talk to you."
"Does Norton have any questions?"
Bane was curious. This son had appeared out of the blue, and she was very fond of him, but she didn't know the best way to get along with Norton.
Norton has received a good education from Bert. Although he is only five years old, he is a cautious, intelligent, thoughtful child, and Bane sometimes has a slight sense of inferiority in front of him.
"Mom, will you and Dad get married?"
Norton stumped Bane with his first question.
Bane didn't know what to say.
When his mother didn't speak, Norton seemed to know something.
He bowed his head and whispered, "Mother, can't you? Don't you like Dad? Are you and Dad... Not married?"
Bane exhaled, knowing he could no longer treat Norton like a child, and said calmly, "Norton, your father and I, it's complicated..."
At this, Norton's little face suddenly fills with loss.
"Mother, will you go?
Bane gasped. He avoided Norton's eyes and whispered, "No."
Bane wouldn't have been able to say those words if he had looked Norton in the eye.
"Mother, you will take your sister with you when you go, and you will leave me here, won't you?"
Bane's eyes widened sharply.
"Norton, what did you say?"
Norton continued, "Mother, if you could only get out of here, you would take my sister with you, but... Mother, you will keep me, and I know that."
"Norton."
"My name is Norton Ron, but my sister's name is Sophie Reed, Mum. Nice to meet you. If Mum really can't stay here any longer and is going to leave, Mum, you'll have to let me know."
Norton's voice trembles as he says this, and even though he's trying to keep his panic under control, he's a five-year-old boy who can't hide his emotions completely, as can be seen from Norton's red eyes.
Bane reached out and took Norton in his arms.
"Norton, Mom will take you away, too."
Norton shook his head. "Mother," he said, "it is so obvious that you are going to leave me here. Honestly, Mother, you will leave me here, and then I will not be here.
"Norton."
"Mom, I am not lying to you, this period of time and mother can live together, I have been very happy, but how can I force mother has been unhappy?"
"Norton, well, mom's really happy..."
"Mom, you don't have to kid me, I know, I know you're not happy, it's really fine."
How can a free bird, now in a cage, be happy?
Bane holds Norton in her arms and looks down. Norton is asleep in her arms. Her mind is so confused that it never occurred to her that this little kid would see through what she really thought.
She had always thought she was well hidden, and she had spoken and acted so carefully that even Bert and Sophie had not seen her mind, but her son had seen it through.
Do you really want to be like this forever? A skeleton in the dark forever? Forever not even a secret lover?
