Chapter 41 You Afriad of Me
Bert Ron coolly turned down the air conditioner.
Bane felt relaxed a little.
Bert curved his mouth. "You're afraid of me," he said.
Bane, looking embarrassed, said, "Mr. Ron, you're thinking too much."
"Really?"
Knowing what he was talking about, Bane nodded and said, "Ron doesn't suit me. I've found another job."
Bert nodded.
"I didn't understand what you were saying, Mr. Ron," said Bane, who was always feeling uneasy about the strange things Bert had said to her.
"What are you talking about?
This guy is really nasty. He knows what Bane is talking about.
"As you mentioned before... What did you mean, Noville Hotel, by alluding to that?"
Bert smiled a little, then suddenly stopped by the side of the road and said, "What do you think?"
The bus stopped moving and Bane felt more nervous. She wanted to get out of the car.
"I don't understand."
"Then I don't understand."
Bert put one hand on the steering wheel, his other hand on the extension of the window, and gave Bane a half-smile.
For an instant, Bane felt that he was being followed by a wild animal.
Bert didn't really want to do anything right now, he just wanted to make the first move when things were settled.
He had too much on his plate to pay the price of being cheated.
A chill came over Bert's face at the thought.
"Better go ahead, Mr. Ron," said Ron.
If this goes on, we're really going to have to keep everyone waiting for her.
Bert started the car again, but the atmosphere inside was more frozen than before.
Bane never spoke again. She always thought it was best not to speak.
The car stopped in front of the restaurant, and Bane tried to push the door, looking eager, but it wouldn't open.
She turned her head nervously.
"Are you so afraid of me?"
Bane was furious at once. He suppressed his anger and said, "Is there anything else you want, Mr. Ron?"
Bert's look was casual. "Norton misses you," he said.
When it comes to Norton, Bane loses half his temper.
"What's the matter with Norton?
"He won't eat," replied Bert gravely.
"... Children can't be so picky about what they eat."
"But he doesn't choose any of your cooking."
Bane was not stupid, and it was easy to see what he meant.
"I'm sure you can find a chef for Norton, Mr. Ron," said Ron.
"I'll come here once a week for a few months, and you'll set the salary."
It didn't sound like a consultation at all. It sounded more like a command, and Bane was on the verge of saying something.
Such a man of conceit is rare!
"Mr. Ron, I don't have that much free time, I'm afraid I'm going to waste your kindness."
Bert knew something about Bane's temper, but she looked meek, but she was more like a cat with claws hidden in it, and knew how to resist.
"Then I'll tell you something."
'What?
"It's about your father."
Bane looked surprised. How did he know this?
Bert saw Bane's astonished look, like a startled fawn, and he suppressed the urge to touch Bane's hair. "If you want to find out, start with your father's secretary," he said.
He knew this because Tom had found it out in the course of looking it up at Bain, and he had told him about it, and he had written it down.
Bane, struggling to keep his own tumult under control, did not doubt Bert's words.
In front of Ron, the Reed business was not even a finger. It did not take much thought.
Dad's secretary?
Bane was in a state of confusion.
Bert unbuckled his seat belt and got out of the car. He walked over to the passenger side, opened the door on the other side, leaned casually out, and said, "I'll have someone pick you up at the end of this week."
Bane had a mixed look at this, and she got out of the car, looked to Bert, and briskly asked, "All you know, can you tell me?"
Bert croaked his mouth, a hint of evil on his face. "The decision is in your hands."
Bane walked toward the dining room with a worried look on his face.
Bert watched her as she walked toward the dining room, and instead of returning to the car, he took out his cigarette, which he did not light, and put to his mouth, his eyes wandering.
Until all is known, the man has to look ahead.
Oh, it's grinding.
Bane found the compartment and was about to open the door when he heard voices in his ear.
"What was this man thinking? It's only her first day and she has no sense of time and she keeps everyone waiting for her!"
"Rightness! The boss is trying to hire her by name, and on top of that, she only has a high school diploma!"
"Really? So how did she get in? We're not a place for cats or dogs in Lakeyne."
"Hey! It would be bad if you didn't speak so loudly for the boss to hear you."
As he said this, footsteps were heard behind Bane.
"Bane?
Bane turned and saw Ward walking toward him.
"Here you are, Bane. I was going to ask you where you had been and thought I'd come to meet you."
Once inside, Ward was struck by Bane.
Ward opened the compartment door, and Maria caught sight of him. "Ward, are you here?" she said.
Ward smiled a little. "Well, just in time for Bane," he said. "Let's eat, the food's almost ready."
Maria looked at Bane and suddenly her face became ugly and her hands clenched.
That's impossible! Why does she have these clothes!
Ward sensed something unusual in Maria. "Maria, you?"
Maria reacted with a complicated face. 'Bane, here you are.'
Bane smiled and replied, "Well, yeah, I'm coming."
Maria's face grew worse at once.
Sensing something was wrong, Ward asked, "What's going on here?"
"No," said Maria quickly. "Go in at once. Everyone is waiting."
As soon as Bane entered the box, all eyes were on her, amazed and envious.
Bane ignored the glances and calmly took a seat.
When everyone had arrived, Ward called for the dishes to be served. The dinner was fairly lively, though no one spoke a word to Bane.
