Today Lucas and I are going to the doctors for the monthly check-up, I think he's a little more excited than me though seeing as this is his first time hearing our child's heart beat and seeing he/she.
Since it's Friday, I would usually be at work but Lucas convinced me to quit, it's not like I had any emotional ties to the place anyways. As I'm watching TV a knock sounds through the house, still clad in my pyjamas I walk to the door and open it only to reveal Lisa, Lucas mom.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" I ask.
"Oh, Lukey told me you were home alone so I decided to come by and keep you company until your doctors appointment." she smiles.
"I would love some company right now, it's so boring here all by myself." we both walk to the couch and sit down, "Would you like anything to drink?"
"Oh no dear, I'm fine. Wow your getting big!" Lisa exclaims looking at my stomach.
"Yeah, I'm so excited for the ultrasound this afternoon."
"How far along are you?"
"Just over two months." Lisa's eyes widen.
"Are you sure there's just one in there?" she jokes.
"Yeah the doctor didn't tell me any different."
Lisa and I talk until Lucas comes home around three this afternoon. I change my clothes before Lucas drives us to the doctor's office and we sit in the maternal ward waiting room.
"Are you excited? I ask him.
"Yeah of course, this is my first child."
My name was called and we were directed into a private room as a nurse checked my weight, height and blood pressure. After writing everything down we were told my doctor will be right with us.
"Lucas, can I ask you a question?"
"Sure, what's up?" he asks standing up from his chair and standing between my legs hanging off the examination table.
"What are we gonna do?"
"What do you mean?"
"Your family is expecting a wedding out of us. We didn't really plan that far ahead."
"What do you want to do?"
"I don't know, I don't want to be that woman who traps you in a marriage you don't want to be in just because I'm carrying your child. What if you find someone who you really love, but you can't do anything because your already tied down to me? I don't want to do that to you, it's not right." he was about to respond when the OB/GYN walked in.
"Good afternoon Jessica, how are you today?"
"Pretty good, the morning sickness is okay, the cravings have gotten more intense so I've gained more weight, I'm a little more tired also."
"Oh, you must be the father." Dr. Moore exclaims finally noticing Lucas, kind of hard not to notice him though.
"Lucas Harris." he shakes her hand politely.
"Nice t meet you, now let's look at your baby and see how he or she is doing. If you will lift up your shirt Jessica so we can start the sonogram."
I lift up my shirt and she rubs the cool gel on my slightly rounded tummy.
"Now let's find your baby." she looks at the screen concentrated, all I see is black, gray and white lines.
"Here we are." she smiles at then screen as an unsynchronized heartbeat sounds through the room.
"Are baby heartbeats supposed to be that unsynchronized?" Lucas asks sounding worried.
"Not normally that out of sync, hold on a moment." she furrows her eyebrows, freezes the screen and makes the image bigger while inspecting it.
"That makes a lot more sense now. Congratulations, you are pregnant with twins."
This new information puts me into shock before a few tears start running down my face.
Dr. Moore hands me a tissue and asks if we want copies of the sonogram, nodding I ask for four. She hands me a paper towel to wipe the gel off my stomach. I look over at Lucas who has silent tear running down his face.
Dr. Moore hand me the copies and starts talking. "So since you are having a multiple pregnancy I want you to come again for your next sonogram in two weeks instead of next month, tiredness will be normal but also try to get more sleep because your body will be compensating for two. Drink lots of water and increase your fibre intake, also after eating maybe take a short walk or sit up straight to help digestion." she tells me a bunch of other helpful things before letting us go.
In the car Lucas starts talking, "That was very unexpected."
"I think your mom had her own suspicions though."
"I don't think I've ever been so scared in my life." he says.
"Don't worry, everything will be fine." I rest my hand on the centre consol.
He grabs it, steering with one hand. I look at him out of the corner of my eye but his eyes stay looking straight ahead at the road.
"I know." he answers glancing my way then putting his attention on the road, not pulling his hand away until we reach his apartment.
*****
It's Monday. I'm bored and alone. Lucas is at work and so was Lisa, so I had nobody to keep me company except for the twins in my tummy. I turn the TV onto TLC and go to the kitchen to make myself some cereal for breakfast.
After two episodes of 'I Didn't Know I was Pregnant' ,three cereal bowls later and a glass of orange juice later, I was bored out of my mind. I tried to distract myself by playing on my phone and surfing the internet but nothing seems to work.
I go into the kitchen to look for a cook book of some sort. I ended up having to look online, after fifteen minutes of unsuccessful looking I gave up, found some mozzarella sticks in the freezer and popped them into the oven.
Half way through my sixth mozza stick, someone knocked on the door. On the other side of the door was a man with blonde hair, green eyes, a nice tan and a friendly smile.
"C'mon Luc, I know you're in there."
Opening the door I answer him, "He isn't home yet." his eyes widen in surprise.
"I didn't know he had a pretty lady friend over, or I would've came much earlier."
"Hi, I'm Jess." I extend my hand for him to shake.
"Brian, it's a pleasure to meet you." he shakes my hand, then walks inside as I close the door.
"So, what lie did he tell you to get you to go out with him?" he asks sitting on the couch while simultaneously stealing one of my mozza sticks.
"I came here willingly, he didn't have to tell me a lie."
"What lies are you telling my fiancée?" Lucas asks coming into the living room. I didn't even know he was home.
"Lucas, what are you doing home so early? I question, mostly because it's only six in the evening.
"I had nothing scheduled for the rest of the day so I decided to come home." he replied giving me a peck on the lips.
He's never done that before, but then I remembered it's all for show because Brian's here.
"Whoa, fiancée? When did this happen? And why didn't you tell me? I'm your best friend bro, you can't just not tell me you're getting married-"
"She's pregnant too." he interrupts while sitting down and putting his arm around me.
"Wow, great friend you are. So now I'm going to be an uncle/ god-father and you have the audacity to tell me now?" Brian wipes away some imaginary tears
"Oh Brian's using big boy words." Lucas exclaims in fake excitement.
"Lucas don't be a big bully."
"Luc, this is a ride or die friendship and you're about to die." Brian says.
The two of them continue to go back and forth while I just sit here quietly with my head resting on his shoulder, finishing my mozza sticks. Soon enough I take out my phone and order delivery Chinese food online.
The doorbell rings, not that they even noticed, and I grab some money from my wallet and pay the delivery man. Lucas and Brian notice my existence when I come back into the living room with a plate of Chinese food.
"Jess, when did you get food?" Lucas asks as I place myself back in his arms.
"While you two ladies were arguing." I take a bite of the lemon chicken.
They both get up and speed walk to the kitchen for food, coming back with plates with food piled to the top making a small hill of food. They come back to their original spots on the couch.
"That's a lot of food." I feel sick just thinking of eating it.
"We are men, we need lots of food." Brian says hitting his chest with the hand that isn't holding his fork.
The rest of the night is filled with laughter and stories, mostly from Brian, not that I minded because he is hilarious. As the night winded down Brian went home, and Lucas and I cleaned up the kitchen washing dishes together as if we have been doing this forever.
"You know I thought I was going to have to be a stripper."
"What?"
"Yeah I didn't know who you were or how to contact you and all that so I thought I was going to have to be a stripper to provide for this baby which I now know is two."
"How did you end up finding me."
"Oh, I met this girl in the pharmacy I went to so I could do a pregnancy test, her name was Maggie, and I explained what you looked like to her and she showed me a picture of you and told me your name."
Maggie? Did you get her last name?"
"Nope, only her first and her number, which I should probably call."
"Hmm...okay." we went back to doing the dishes, then went upstairs to our separate bedrooms when we finished.
After I took a nice hot shower I searched high and low looking for Maggie's number before locating my cell phone and calling her. The phone rings for a while before the familiar voice answers.
"Hello?"
"Hey Maggie? It's Jessica, I was the girl in the pharmacy from a little while back who was looking for my baby daddy."
"Oh, I was wondering what happened to you. So how did it go?"
"Well I'm currently in his apartment so pretty well actually."
"I'm so glad things worked out." she exclaims
"So, how are you doing?"
"Pretty good, I'm actually flying to New York soon for a family thing so maybe we could meet up and chat."
"Yeah that would be amazing, it gets kind of lonely when Lucas goes to work, but um Maggie, can I ask you a quick question?"
"Yeah, hit me."
"How did you know I was talking about Lucas when I explained him to you?"
She chuckles, "I knew I forgot to tell you something. I'm his cousin."
I am currently in the waiting room for our appointment at the OB/GYN, waiting for my named to be called out, I don't have anyone to entertain me because Lucas is in the bathroom and my phone is dead.
Suddenly a woman holding a baby that looks to be around one month old catches my attention.
"Is this seat taken?" she points to the one on my left.
"No, be my guest."
"I'm Lacey, and this little guy is Jake."
"Hi, I'm Jessica."
"How far along are you?" she asks putting the baby carrier on her lap as she sits beside me.
"Three months. How old is yours?" I smile referring to the sleeping baby.
"One and a half months, I'm here for the six week post partum check up." she smiles with another emotion shining through her eyes.
I was about to respond when the secretary at the front desk calls my name. I wave goodbye and follow the nurse to the room.
Where is Lucas, it's been like ten minutes since I've been in here? I thought guys didn't take long to go to the bathroom.
As soon as the thought entered my mind Lucas walking into the doctor's room and smiled at me.
"Sorry I took so long, I got caught up with something." he smiles but it doesn't quite reach his eyes.
"I was starting to wonder if the ground opened up and swallowed you." I laughed softly.
A few minutes later Dr.Moore walked in and we started the appointment. Thankfully everything went well and we got another picture of the twins, which reminds me I have to give Lisa her and Johns copies of the sonogram pictures.
As we were walking to the car Lucas's phone started ringing.
"Hello?...hey mom.....tonight?.....I was hoping Jess and I could just relax at home.....no mom.....I know...okay...okay.....yes mom......okay we'll be there......bye mom.....love you too."
"What did she say?" I ask sitting on the passenger side
"My cousin is coming down and she wants us to be there."
"Do you know who it is?"
"Nah, mom said we were close before we moved, but we were kids then anyways."
"Well what time do we have to be there?"
"Six." he merges onto the main road.
"Can we stop at the grocery store? I want to pick up a few things ."
"Yeah sure no problem." he says distractedly.
"Are you okay? You've been acting weird since the appointment."
"Um, yeah I'm fine." he smiles reassuringly.
He pulls into the parking lot at the store and I take off my seatbelt, I start walking to the front doors when I notice Lucas isn't behind me, "Aren't you coming in?"
"I gotta make a phone call, I'll meet you in there."
That little phone call he had to make ended up taking the entire time that I was in the store. I'll admit that I'm upset mostly because things were going so great between us and today, something changed and I don't even know what.
