Chapter fourteen
“Cathy get your phone before I fucking break it in half!” People wake up to kisses on the forehead or bird’s singing or some shit like that and I wake up to my annoying little sister’s voice. Life isn’t fair.
I feel around my bed for my ringing phone and pick it up, I open my eye lids with much difficulty and put the phone to my ears before realizing it was my back up, back up alarm and it meant—oh my fucking God I’m late for Dr. Meeks class.
I jump off the bed and rush to the bathroom and pay no heed to the coldness of the water as a take the fastest shower I’ve probably ever taken in my life, I don’t waste time rubbing cream on my body or even bothering to dry my hair, I pull on a hoodie and tights after putting on underwear before rushing down the stairs, almost missing two or three steps. Emma is sitting in her usual seat at the dining but I don’t give her a second glance before grabbing an apple.
I eat the fruit on the way to school, halfway running and munching, it was quite pathetic if I do say so myself, thank God for the hoodie because it concealed my identity, I don’t need a complete social murder with everything that’s already happening.
I open the door to Dr. Meeks class when I get to school and I’m surprised to find that he’s not at the front with his glasses and khaki pants. I walk to the back of the class and sit on a chair near the window that overlooked the lawn, Emerald, Beast and I’s favorite place.
As though they heard me, I see the both of them walking past and almost yell out their names but I stopped myself just in time remembering what had happened yesterday. I pull out my old iphone and type out an apology before sending it to our group when I was satisfied with it, it followed with an invitation for a night out on Friday, and I really hope they accept.
Emerald looks up to the window and our eyes meet, I try out my best sad face and her lips curved upwards a bit. Beast takes longer to acknowledge me but he did he sends me the finger, it made me laugh though when I saw the wink at the end. My phone dinged with an incoming message and I tap on it excitedly.
Drinks on me bitch.
That was from Beast, I reply with a thumbs up and yes sir. Saves me the trouble since I can’t exactly afford it.
Someone was calling for our attention at the front and I turn with a groan my fingers crossed hoping they would confirm Dr. Meeks wouldn’t make it.
“Sorry to inform you but Dr. Meeks would not be available for the next few months due t—“cheers rang out in the classroom and I would’ve laughed at the woman’s astonished expression had it been my humor glands didn’t discard me along with my brain’s ability to understand what it’s being taught and apparently sister has discarded me too, guess the next would be my sanity.
Even that seems to be close by since I’m always speaking to myself these days and I’m always thinking of a man that I don’t know what he looks like even if he held me at gunpoint.
“—you’ll have a substitute for the months Dr. Meeks is gone. He should be here in abou—“the door closing stopped her from completing her sentence, she smiled at the person that just entered. “Now,”
She said something to him in a low voice, I can’t see him well from where I’m sitting because he is too far from me and he is facing the other way but he is quite tall, okay not quite, he is very tall.
“This will be your substitute for the next few months, Mr. Brandon, please.” She pointed center stage and the man came further and stood at the front of the class and everywhere went still.
Silence envelops the whole class, the noise just stopped all of a sudden almost like a TV was muted.
I can't see him clearly from where I'm sitting but even from here, I can make out half of his face was ruined. Like he was caught in a fire or something of the sort.
I can't tell the details but I believe it's gruesome, it does look like that. While one side of his face was handsome, perfect jaw and full brows, the other was mutated.
I think I'm the only creep that finds it intriguing, the fact that one talks to me saves me from exposing my creepiness.
Someone gasped and as though the ice was broken, the class erupted in murmurs and shouts just like it had gotten quiet.
The fact that he's standing with his shoulders squared and his gait proud made me feel something, I don't know what and I'm not sure I want to know.
"This is Mr. Noah L. Brandon, your substitute."
"Good day class," I almost melt at his deep voice. I want to describe it but I don't think any word I use in the whole English dictionary would do justice to it so let's just leave it at I think that's how angels sound.
I'll definitely pay attention to classes now, heck I can't be distracted if that's the voice I'm hearing, maybe I'll be distracted but by the voice, call it my guilty pleasure.
The woman, I know she works in the school's administrative department but I never really cared to know her name, she walked out and left him to the class.
The murmurs stop once he steps on stage, I can feel his dominant energy from here, or maybe that's just my hoe self but I know I do feel something right now. Everyone myself included was shamelessly gawking at him and I had this protective instinct to shield him away from their scrutinizing gazes. Which was strange cause look at him, if he was an animal he`d be a lion with all of this masculine lion-ness. Id probably be a an antelope or even a fat nice rabbit ready for dinner.
