THREATS
She spoke in a low key, cocking her head to the side as if she were listening to a certain voice that was feeding her with the information. “Ejay is aware of our every plan. He kidnapped the girls, meaning that he knew about our plan to return them to their homes, and even after such a heinous crime, a police officer was back alive to convey the message of what he had witnessed. I do not doubt that he took him captive, meaning that he knew Deep’s moves. He started his attacks on me exactly when I got here, meaning that he knew I was coming. He also sent that invite to the music gala night right to my hotel, meaning that he knows where I am staying. Doesn’t that sound suspicious to you, Martin?” Gia asked.
Martin thought for a while, digesting every word that Gia had said. “You have a point. All this is too farfetched to be circumstantial. It seems like he is watching you so close.” He spoke in a low tone, Gia’s words making every sense to him.
But just how far was he from understanding her point exactly?
“No!” Gia said, summoning both their gazes at her while she took a minute to browse Martin’s face. The man seemed at utter loss to get what she was driving at. “You still don't know it, Martin! It is no longer about him watching us. It was no longer about him watching us from the start when he supposedly did not die back there on the hill. This is more than that.”
Grace pulled a face, the urge to understand her sister’s point spewing out in words. “What are you trying to say, Gia?”
“Yes, Gia. I am at a loss, too.” The officer affirmed, looking at Gia.
“Ejay has a spy. And you all know who I suspect.” She spoke.
Martin shook his head, blinking a couple of times, refusing to entertain that thought. “Gia, look! Those are very serious allegations. You are lying to the boss. That could get you into serious trouble. You better make sure you don’t mention this to anyone.”The officer warned.
Gia scoffed. “Do I look like I am scared, officer?”
She definitely looked too bold for her own good. “No. But you should, especially if what you are insinuating is true. You already have Ejay. You don’t want to have another person chase after you. Take my advice, and please do not mention this to anyone.” The officer pleaded.
“I am not scared! If that boss of yours is clean, let him face me and answer all my questions. I want to face him. Did you give my message to him?” Gia asked.
“I did. But he said that he was busy. You should wait until he finds time, and you should not say anything to the media or anyone.”
“Yeah? I should wait. For how long? A day? Two? A week? A month?” Gia asked in apprehension.
The officer shook his head, denoting that he was unsure when. “I cannot say that for sure. We just have to keep pushing.“
“Until when? Forever? After everyone around me gets slaughtered one by one until that monster finally quenches his thirst to kill us all." Gia’s rage was rising pretty high, blurring every other sense.
“It will not get to that point. Do you think that, as the police, we are happy and proud in the middle of all this terror? No, because it is questioning our capabilities and responsibilities for the duties we are sworn to. This is also hurting us. We are also worried and not resting just like you, Gia.” The officer spoke.
Gia shook her head, differing from the officer’s words. “No, Martin. I bet I disagree with you on this because nobody knows what I am going through every single day and night. And after what happened to Deep, I will have it even worse from now on. Nobody knows just how much pain I am swimming in right now, wondering who the monster will target next. Who knows? He might be watching and listening to our conversation right now.”
Officer Martin sighed heavily, scratching his head before speaking. "I understand your worries. And I know it seems like we are doing nothing, but believe me, we are doing all that we can. We just cannot wake up and issue a man’s hunt without proof.”
“I am the proof. I saw him with my eyes.” Gia retorted, the ugly face of that smile flickering in her mind.
“It was only you who saw that man, Gia. You saw people’s reactions at the Gala when you mentioned that there was someone watching you from the outside. They thought you were going crazy. If that was Ejay’s plan, that can be used against you, and it would be made to look like you are traumatized by what you went through in his hands.” Martin explained.
Gia sighed bitterly. The monster was really playing his cards so well. He was succeeding in each and every plan of his. Gia felt a sense of hopelessness slap her so hard. “Unbelievable! This monster is winning, and I bet he is laughing at our inutile efforts right now.”
“I would love so much to arrest that man right now, but all that we have is circumstantial evidence, but nothing substantial to tie Ejay directly to this incident. And about questioning his resurrection, we can only wait for the general to give the go-ahead to chase the man down.” The officer explained.
Grace intervened, placing a hand on Gia's shoulder. "We appreciate your efforts, Officer Martin. But there is something you guys should take into consideration. Ejay has been a constant threat to Gia, and now this happens to Deep right after his reappearance. There has to be a connection."
Gia's frustration turned to anger. "So, what? We're just supposed to sit here and wait for you to find a smoking gun while Deep fights for his life? While we stay back and cower from this fear,? This is unacceptable!"
"I understand your anger, Gia," Officer Martin said, trying to maintain his composure. "Believe me, we're doing everything we can within the limits of the law. We need a breakthrough or new evidence to move forward."
