Gold digger
S’bu was so excited that he posted on his social media wall that “guest what, she loves me too but I need to prove that I’m worthy of that love. Gents help me out here”. Within minutes a lot of his friends, admires and followers congratulated him and sent suggestions on how he can prove himself. The girl that brought S’bu to his knees, I salute her, one of friends commented. He had posted so much about persuading Thandi to be his girlfriend that everyone knew whom he was talking about on his post without mentioning her name.
News travelled fast, by mid week everyone was talking about Thandi finally confessing her feelings to S’bu. At school Cindy and Pretty were not talking to Thandi. They felt since she knew that they fancied S’bu she should not have gotten involved with him. Mandy who would normally be on her side was too distracted lately. After Thandi introduced her to Bonga, she’s been head over heels in love and daydreaming. Thandi had to deal with her friends on her own but before she could come up with a plan to reconcile with them, S’the joined in. He had confessed his love to Thandi previously but she had told him that she was not ready for any relationship. He felt that Thandi favoured S’bu over him because he was well off and called Thandi a gold digger. Thandi went home upset that day. She had never been called a gold digger before and it hurt her very much. She got hurt every time she was associated with S’bu. She decided to call him and tell him about the horrible day she had. Even though they spoke every night since he went back to university, S’bu was happy to receive a call from Thandi. He listened to everything she said paying attention to every detail.
“So, my beautiful gold digger, how much of my money have you spent? Do you have a love portion for me to love your friends so they can talk to you again?” he teased.
She laughed, S’bu had a way of making his point and make her feel better at the same time. She had never taken any money or gift from him, so she should not care what S’the says. She had no control of who S’bu loves, therefore it was useless to even worry about Cindy and Pretty when she can’t change anything.
“I miss you” she said already feeling better.
“I love you and miss you too” he responded.
The following day at school, Thandi told both Cindy and Pretty that it was childish of them to take their frustrations on her or even be angry with her when they were not and have never in a relationship with S’bu.
“You are my friends and I love you but I’m not going to apologise for loving him” she told them.
S’the on the other side came to apologise first to her. He valued their friendship. He did not think S’bu was the right guy for Thandi but will support her. Thandi was very touched and hugged him. That night S’bu was happy that Thandi was feeling better but not happy about her hugging another man who clearly wanted her.
“S’bu, I knew S’the way before I met you. If anything was to happen between us, it would have happened long time ago. My heart belongs to only you, I promise” she reassured him.
It was now October and the school was preparing for the matric dance followed by a tour to Johannesburg. The pupils were all very excited about it and started making arrangements. Thandi’s school did not allow pupils to bring partners from outside so they all have to choose partners from the school. Thandi and S’the decided to be matric dance partners. She did not mention this to S’bu because she knew what his reaction would be.
The day of the matric dance arrived and all pupils walked down had red carpet with their partners holding hands with cameras flashing from all directions. They listened to motivational speakers giving them words of encouragement, dined and danced all evening.
The following day, the matric dance photos were all over social media. Someone tagged S’bu on a photo of Thandi and S’the walking on a red carpet holding hands. The photo had a caption perfect couple on it. S’bu looked at the photo for a long time. On this photo Thandi was gorgeous, wearing royal navy silk gown that accentuated her breasts and figure perfectly. The back was transparent material of the same colour. Her hair was curled and tied skilfully on the top with some curls dropping on her forehead. This highlighted her beautiful facial features. The photo would have been perfect if not for the man on her side who was wearing a suit matching her dress. S’bu could tell that the same tailor made both Thandi’s dress and S’the’s suit because the colour and designs matched perfectly. This was proof that the event was planned in advance and Thandi did not tell him about the matric dance and her choice of a partner. He was so angry he could not even talk, he saved the photo, sent it to Thandi and waited.
It had only been one day since the matric dance. Thandi knew that S’bu would not have approved S’the as her partner and had decided to not tell him about the whole event. She hoped that it would be small and since it as only her school mates allowed, it would not attract any attention. When she saw the cameras flashing yesterday, she realised how wrong she was but was too late. Her school has had very good results in consecutive years and had attracted attention especially on things involving matriculants. She looked at the message on her phone and saw the photo S’bu sent her and her jaw dropped. Thandi knew that S’bu would find out about it, she just did not think that it would be this soon. She had not even thought of an explanation for him.
She had taken a photo alone before the matric dance and thought it was the best of all of them. She decided to send it to him with a message that said ‘keep this one instead: I took this one for you, you are the only one in my heart and I know I owe you an explanation.’
S’bu looked at the photo and Thandi’s message and his heart melted. Even though Thandi was not his girlfriend officially he knew that she would not cheat on him. He also knew her reasons for not telling him about S’the and the matric dance. He replied to Thandi’s message by ‘you are not getting out of this that easy’.
When Thandi saw S’bu response, she smiled and calmed down. He was not as angry as she expected him to be. She sent him another message saying ‘next week we are touring Johannesburg, I will spend sometime with you if the school allows and if you are available’.
S’bu responded by ‘I’m never too busy for you, looking forward to it’.
S’bu posted Thandi’s photo on his profile with no caption. Since the photo was taken before the matric dance everyone assumed that he knew about it and even knew about Thandi’s event partner. Some asked if he was not worried about her going to the event with someone else and he responded by saying I’m the only one in her heart, that’s good enough for me. This scored him lots of points with women who started making comments about how nice it would be if all man trusted their women like that. S’bu smiled and started making plans for next week. He fast tracked and submitted all his assignments and cleared his diary for the whole week.
