Never get enough of you
S’bu’s phone rang, Mandy started shouting at him the moment he answered.
“S’bu are you crazy? I asked you to stop Thandi from loosing her virginity, you decided to just replace Tsepo and let her do it anyway! what’s wrong with you? Don’t you get enough of those many floozes you have? I’m going to kill you!”Mandy screamed over the phone.
Thandi overheard the conversation and took the phone from S’bu to talk to her friend.
“Mandy, calm down, it was my idea. S’bu tried to change my mind, he really did but I had made up my mind. It was bound to happen soon or later and I’m glad it’s over now.”
“Was he gentle?”Mandy asked concerned.
“It was perfect” Thandi said looking at S’bu smiling. “If I knew how much I was missing out, I would have surrendered to your brother a long time ago” she said teasingly.
“Hey, that’s my brother you talking about. Careful you don’t get pregnant” Mandy said before dropping the call.
Thandi froze, everything happened so fast she did not think about a contraceptive. The last thing she needed was to get pregnant while still at university. Her family would definitely kill her.
“Are you ok?” S’bu asked when he saw her looking pale.
“I’m not on a contraceptive!” she exclaimed. “I can’t get pregnant, I just can’t” she added panicking.
“Calm down, I’ve taken care of it, he said pulling her to his arms. I asked Duma to get us the morning after pill when they were here earlier, he brought it over when you were sleeping” he added.
Thandi was glad that S’bu thought of everything. “How does that work?” she asked curious. She didn’t know anything about contraceptives, she never had to worry about it before.
“It prevents pregnancy but you must drink it within 72 hours of unprotected sex. That means we don’t have to worry the rest of the weekend” he said kissing her neck.
She blushed understanding what he meant. “Don’t you think we’ve overindulged?” she asked innocently.
“I don’t think I’ll ever have enough of you” he said lovingly.
The weekend was soon over, S’bu took Thandi back to her university. The two parted reluctantly and promised to meet each other the following weekend. S’bu spent most of the week consulting with Menzi and Duma on what to do about the cow he owed Thandi’s family since she did not want to tell her family that she lost her virginity. They both advised him to stick to tradition and do the right thing. It might be hard now but doing the right thing now will make it easy for him to deal with Thandi’s family in the future.
S’bu made his decision and told Mrs J who instructed him to tell Thandi to inform her family that they would be expecting them the coming Saturday.
When S’bu told Thandi about it, she was so angry with him for going behind her back that she stopped talking to him. She felt betrayed by S’bu once again. She had no choice now but tell her family about it. Her mother told her to come home that Friday so they can go to the Jobe’s on Saturday.
On a Thursday she was walking to her residence when she met Tsepo who decided to join her. It was the first time they met since they broke up. To Thandi’s surprise Tsepo was very friendly towards her. He told her that he had been reading S’bu’s posts and knew about her loosing her virginity, the dinner and S’bu’s tattoo. S’bu had made so much fuss about it, everyone who followed him knew all about it. Thandi found it so easy to talk to Tsepo, she even told him about the fallout between her and S’bu.
“I know you are upset right now but I would have done the exact thing if I was in his shoes” Tsepo said.
“You taking his side!”Thandi exclaimed.
“It’s the right thing to do and you know it”Tsepo told her.
Thandi could not believe that Tsepo was siding with S’bu in all of this. Whoever said men were the same was right, she thought.
The following day she took the bus back home. She ignored S’bu’s calls and messages asking her if he should come and pick her up so they could go home together. She was picked up by her mother from her local town to the village. The moment she dreaded had finally come. Her aunts were all at home and wanted details on what happened between her and S’bu. Why was she behaving like city girls and forgetting her traditions. Why did she start dating when the family had not given her permission. Thandi apologised but her mother was too angry with her for defiling the family and she started beating her up with a sjambok until her grandma intervened. Thandi went to sleep so sad, her body ached really bad, she had lashes everywhere. She cursed S’bu for it and decided never to trust him again. Very early Saturday morning Thandi, her mom and her aunts left and headed to S’bu’s home. At the Jobe home, they were welcomed by Mrs J who lead them to the lounge. In the lounge there was S’bu, Menzi, Zake, Mr and Mrs J. Zake who was Mr J’s younger brother and a respected lawyer was to represent the Jobe family today. After greetings, Thandi’s aunt informed the Jobe family that they came today because their son had broken their daughters virginity.
“How do you know that your daughter was still a virgin?” Zake asked.
Thandi’s aunt took out the virginity certificates issued by the Kings palace and handed them over to Zake.
“Impressive” Zake said but it has been a year since her last certificate. “She could have lost her virginity to someone else two or three months ago” he added.
Thandi’s family could not dispute that since girls only went once a year to the Kings palace and Thandi was at the university away from them for the past eight months. At this point Thandi could have produced S’bu’s social media posts admitting to breaking her virginity and her mother would be given her cow but she was too angry with both her mother and S’bu to say anything and decided to let things play out. Zake realised that he was winning the argument and could get away without giving Thandi’s family the cow. Being a lawyer he loved wining and making his point. He stood up as if making a closing argument in a court.
“You were not with your daughter for most part of this year therefore cannot be sure of her behaviour. You have no proof that she was indeed still a virgin when she slept with our son. Our sons have been targeted by a lot of women who want money and all sorts of things because of our family’s reputation. We can never allow that to happen.”
Thandi listened to Zake and couldn’t believe her ears. S’bu insisted she informed her family now his uncle was literally calling her a gold digger. She closed her eyes with her head down fighting her tears from coming out and wanted to get out of there.
“If there’s some evidence you have that can prove that our son is the culprit, please come forward with it or leave us in peace” Zake ended his speech looking at Thandi.
Thandi shook her head, looked at her aunts signalling them to leave and stood up to leave.
