Chapter fourteen
The next day, Drew made his way to the palace. He needed to see how his friend was faring especially with his failing eyesight. The meeting with some of the pack members was slated for seven p.m that evening and Drew was not ready for it. Nevertheless, he planned to face him squarely like the Alpha he was.
"Son is that you,” Nikolas said.
Drew met him in the large living room where he was sorting out a pack of cards. Drew couldn't understand how he was able to do this since his sight wasn't all that good. He smiled as he picked up some cards that had fallen to the ground, setting them gingerly on the table.
"Yes Nikolas, I'm here. I stopped by to see how you're doing this morning before I go into the office", Drew said.
"Well, your jolly old man is alive and well. I think my eyesight is coming back gradually,” he grinned.
"Well, I'm happy to hear that. Nick, there's something I've been meaning to tell you.”
Ever since he discovered that Laura was his mate, he had been wanting to tell his friend. It wouldn't do him good if he kept that bit of information away from him.
"I've found my mate Nick,” he said.
For several minutes, Alpha Nikolas remained quiet. Drew could tell that he was thinking about what he had just said but he didn't quite understand why he took so long to respond.
"In all my years, I never thought I would see this day. The day my boy would finally find his mate", he rasped.
"I'm glad for Nick. At least, it helps knowing that someone would help me in the running of the organization", Dre smiled.
"Now, who is she? I want to meet her.”
Drew told him all about Laura and as he spoke, he missed her terribly. It was just last night he saw her but yet, he wished she was here with him.
"Hmm... My boy, are you sure she's really your mate?" Alpha Nikolas said.
"With every fiber of my being Nick. I'm sure" Drew said.
"I see. Well, you know that you can't mess with her and I hear that she comes from a very strong family so you have to be careful on how you deal with her.”
Drew knew what he said was true but he hated to think that everyone thought he was making a mistake by being her mate. Laura was harmless, he had spent enough time with her to know that.
"I know Nick and I intend on being careful. She's a really nice girl when you get to know her", he said.
"I know and that's why I'm okay with her being your mate, the Moon goddess can never lead us astray".
"I agree with Nick. We'll come visit as soon as we can, anytime soon Nick".
"I'll be counting on that. How is business and the office?".
Drew had a mind to tell him about all his troubles with Alpha Jed and his son but he waved that thought away. He didn't want to cause unnecessary panic in his mind considering how frail he looked.
"Everything's going on fine Nick", he simply said.
"That's good to hear. If you need anything, you just let me know okay?".
"I will Nick, thank you".
An hour later, Drew left the palace. Carlos, his driver who also doubled as a body guard sped through the highway, heading to his office.
"Boss, I just received some information", he said.
Drew looked up from his iPad that was resting on his hands. From his tone, he could tell that Carlos was serious.
"What's the gist?",he said calmly.
"An unidentified male was seen lurking around your mate's apartment. We've stationed more agents to safeguard the area. As of now, we're waiting for further information concerning this".
Drew sat in fear as he mulled over Carlo's words. He had never felt this much fear in his life before. He vividly remembered the last time he felt this fear was when his mother was kidnapped a year before her death.
"Turn around, take me to Laura's house", he thundered.
"Sir, there's nothing to fear. The whole apartment is surrounded and even as we speak, the intruder might have gotten away".
"I wasn't asking for any explanations Carlos, turn the damn car around", Drew seethed.
"Yes boss".
Some minutes later, Carlos pulled into the driveway of Laura's house. Drew dashed out of the car, heading towards the front door. True to his words, Drew could see security agents who wore plain clothes patrolling the area.
He walked towards her front door, banging it with all the strength he had. Laura opened almost immediately and when she saw Drew, she smiled. Her smile was short-lived though when she saw the worry in his eyes.
"Drew, what's the matter?",she said.
She ushered him in with worry in her eyes. Drew gripped her waist, pulling her to him. Laura could tell that he was beyond worried especially with the way his body was tensed up.
"I... Never mind, I'm just glad you're okay", he said, breathing in her intoxicating scent.
"Drew, you're giving me a fright. What's the problem?", Laura said.
"I just heard some frightening things but it's okay now that you're in my arms".
Laura remained quiet, stroking his dark brown hair that had grown into a shoulder length. She needed to remind him to get a cut. Though she loved the new length, she preferred the shorter length of his hair.
"I'm okay Drew why wouldn't I be. I'm as safe as the president, especially with all the security agents breathing down my neck. And don't think I haven't noticed them, they're not so inconspicuous as they intend to", she laughed.
Her laughter was like magic to his ears as he breathed in her scent. He was beyond relieved as he held her in his hands.
"That reminds me, my friend would like to see you", Laura said.
"Alpha Nikolas? Really?" Laura said.
"Yep, just call it an introduction of mates", he laughed.
"That would be an honor. I'll be ready whenever you are", she smiled.
"That's great. I'll come pick you up this weekend, how's that?", Drew said.
"That's okay. But please, you're running late. It's best you get to work.'' Laura laughed, pushing him lightly.
Drew laughed as his mate escorted him out of the house. When they got to the car, he kissed her with everything he had right in front of his numerous staff.
"Laters baby", he said before the car zoomed off in a screech.
Laura sighed, giggling like a love struck teenager. There was no doubt about it, she was in love and even a blind man could see she was in love. Drew was the best thing that had ever happened to her and she was going to spend the rest of her life loving her. She knew he was going to protect her as much as he could and there was nothing she wouldn't do for him.
He completed her just like she did to him and she knew that as long as they were together, she was bound to love him. Now that battle was imminent, Laura knew she needed his help more than ever before because she couldn't fight her step father and his son alone.
If they combined forces as Alpha's, they were sure of defeating Alpha Jed and his entire pack. But still, Laura knew that it would take a lot of courage to defeat them. Her stepfather was known to have the strongest pack amongst all wolf packs and his members were legendary in their fighting prowess. It would only take a lot of guts and bravery to kill all of them but Laura was determined to show them that she was stronger than them.
Laura might have been failing in the past but this time around, she was determined to be the victor because she knew the fates would be on her side. Her parents' spiritswere with her, she could feel it in everything she did and this time around, she was ready to accept it because she knew it would aid in her victory.
Alpha Drew had done a whole lot for her and Laura vowed to repay him as soon as she got the opportunity. It was a good thing she was mated to him. It just made things easier for her and better. Now that she had someone on her side, she was assured that her stepfather and his son would be a thing of the past.
