Chapter twenty three

‘’How is Alpha Nikolas fairing?’’ Laura asked.

It's been two weeks since they got the news about his ailment and ever since then, Drew had been a sad mess. A day hardly passed that he didn’t think about what would happen if Alpha Nikolas left this world. He was so attached to him, the Alpha basically taught him everything he needed to know as an Alpha Wolf and now that his health was at stake, Drew was feeling useless to do anything.

‘’He’s getting better at least much better than how he was last week.’’ Drew said.

Laura, sensing his discomfort moved closer to him, placing her warm palms on his much larger ones. There was no telling what he was feeling and going through within his mind.

‘’You see. I told you Alpha Nikolas would recover, now look.’’ Laura smiled.

Drew chuckled, drawing her closer as he kissed her lightly. He didn’t know what he'd have done if she wasn’t by his side to comfort him. She brought a semblance of peace to his life, one that he desperately needed.

‘’I know right. He’s a very strong man.’’ Drew laughed.

Just then, Laura’s phone beeped beside her, startling her. She didn’t have many contacts saved on her phone so she was quite surprised she had a call.

‘’Who could that be?’’ Drew asked.

‘’I have no idea.’’ Laura said, picking up the phone.

She glanced at the caller ID but it was a barred number, meaning that she couldn’t see the person that called her.

‘’Put it on speaker.’’ Drew said.

Laura nodded, placing her phone on her ear. The person at the other end remained silent, breathing into the phone. Laura on her own remained quiet as she waited patiently for the other person to speak.

‘’Yes.’’ Drew snapped.

He was tired of waiting for whoever it was on the other end to speak. He wasn’t in the mood for games and he wouldn’t hesitate to cut the call if the person didn’t speak.

‘’I knew you would talk first. That’s why you’re often regarded as lousy.’’

Both of them stilled as the unmistakable voice of Alpha Jed filled the air. Even from where she sat. Laura shivered as that voice sent fear straight into her heart.

‘’Jed.’’ Drew growled.

‘’Drew.’’ he laughed.

‘’What do you want?’’ Laura asked.

She refused to get scared anymore. She was an Alpha wolf and she vowed to longer be intimidated by Alpha Jed. He couldn’t reach her and even if he tried, Alpha Drew and his pack would have them for breakfast. Alpha Jed knew this and that was why he stalled on attacking Drew and his pack.

‘’Nothing. I just called to remind you that I am still in charge. Laura, you might run far, far away but i want you to know that i will find you and when i do, you’ll be really sorry you left my pack.’’ Alpha Jed said.

Laura shivered, staring at Drew with tear filled eyes. She knew a threat when she heard one and this time around, Alpha Jed was bent on carrying out his threat.

‘’You lie Jed, you lie! You would never get your hands on my mate, over my dead body.’’ Drew screamed.

‘’Oh, so be it then. I will make sure you’re dead before i have my way with your slut of a mate.’’ Alpha Jed chuckled.

Laura couldn’t imagine how someone would be so sick and heartless. Alpha Jed had no single bone of empathy in him and this was testament to the way he treated his subjects. Laura had seen first hand how he maltreated them. Sometimes, he killed them without any reason.

Laura knew that the only reason she was alive was due to the fact that she was his step daughter but even at that, she was no different from the slaves he treated as rags.

‘’Get lost!’’ Drew growled.

Laura placed a hand on his shoulder, silently telling him to calm down. That was Alpha Jed’s plan. His plan was to rile Drew up and make him angry before cutting the call on him. He was a manipulator, a vile and evil man who loved to see others in pain. Laura swore within her to make him pay for everything he had done to her and all the innocent people under him.

‘’I will but remember, I will always find you Laura.’’ he said before cutting the call.

Laura broke down in tears, sobbing as she heaved in pain. It was clear now, she would never be free from her step father and his evil. It just seemed like she was cursed to be tormented by him for the rest of her life.

‘’Laura, look at me.’’ Drew said quietly.

His heart broke upon seeing the look of pain in his mate’s face. He would do anything and absolutely anything to take that look away from her face. Alpha Jed was posing a threat and Drew knew in no distant time, he might carry out his plans. That was something he couldn’t afford happening.

She raised up her head, staring at the man she had come to love with all her heart. From him, she drew her strength and she knew that if he wasn’t around her, she would have been a hopeless mess.

‘’We are going to fight Alpha Jed together. I don’t want you to think that I'll leave you all alone. I belong to you Laura and you belong to me. We’re a team and i never want you to forget that.’’ Drew said.

Laura hiccuped, staring at the man she had come to love. There was so much conviction in his eyes and his words. Still, she had some doubts on whether he would be able to defeat Alpha Jed. His threats still rang out in her ear and at that moment, she was having a hard time believing anything.

‘’Drew, do you think it's possible? Did you hear the venom in his words?’’ Laura said.

‘’I did but I want you to know that all those are mere threats. Alpha Jed couldn’t even come near you even if he tried. Laura, the first time I saw you, I promised I would keep you safe and that had never changed. You have no reason to be scared, i would always be with you.’’ Drew said.

Laura nodded as Drew wrapped his hands around her in a bear hug. He easily swallowed her up because of how big he was. Laura rested her head on his chest, breathing in his scent that seemed to calm her down.

‘’I’ll always be with you.’’ Drew said.

‘’You know, i really don’t know what i’ll have done without you here by my side.’’ Laura chuckled.

‘’Let's say you could have been lonely especially if i wasn’t there to keep you warm at night.’’ Drew said, wiggling his eyes seductively.

Laura burst out laughing, smacking his chest. He had a sweet might and he just had a way of cheering her up which was something she loved about him.

‘’I love you Drew and thank you for making me feel safe, you really have no idea what that means to me.’’ Laura sighed.

‘’Laura, there’s really nothing to thank me for. It is my duty as your Alpha and your mate to keep you safe at all times. Remember you would do the same for me if you were in my shoes.’’ Drew smiled.

He kissed her, loving the feel of her lips on his. Laura moaned, rubbing her heat on his erection that poked at her.

‘’Drew!’’ Laura laughed.

‘’That’s what you do to me baby girl.’’ he laughed.

‘’Why don’t we take this to the bedroom?’’ Laura grinned, unbuckling his belt.

‘’I thought you’d never ask.’’ Drew grinned.

Laura laughed, straddling his waist as he carried her towards their impressive bedroom. As far as she was with Drew, she knew that everything would be fine.
