Chapter thirty
"I'm telling you, man, we got attacked yesterday,’’ Drew growled.
He was on the phone with his best friends who tried to calm him down as best as they could but they were failing in that.
"Where's the body?" Jack asked.
"Body? He escaped man, he fucking escaped. Why are you asking? That wouldn't change the fact that I got attacked.’’ Drew growled.
"I know but do you know we can track the print at the point of the attack and get where he came from,’’ Jack said.
Brian felt stupid, he didn't know why he didn't think of that before but he was glad someone pointed it out to him.
‘’You don’t need to track any prints. I know where the attacker came from.’’ Drew said.
‘’From where?’’ Jack asked.
‘’It was from Alpha Jed’s pack and it was his son that carried out the attack,’’ Drew said.
His friends remained quiet for the longest time he had ever known them to stay quiet. It felt like they were in a graveyard. Drew knew that they didn’t expect him to say this and this just left them dumbfounded.
‘’Wow. That’s an interesting turn of events.’’ Jack said.
‘’I know but we’ll deal with that later. I need to get back soon because I have a feeling that Alpha Jed would be coming to retaliate this time around and it's not going to be funny.’’ Drew said.
"Where's Laura ?" Killian asked.
"She's on the phone with some of her friends. They called today in like over a week now,’’ he said.
"Drew, I need you to come back home soon and with Laura. We need to run a test on you both and since he said something connected to your mother’s death, we need to do that as well." Jack said.
"I will, I don't even plan on staying here any longer. Heck, we're no longer safe here.’’ Drew said.
"Just stay safe, we'll figure this out," Killian said.
"Thanks, guys, I appreciate your help,’’ Drew said.
"It's okay,’’ Jack said.
"How's Alpha Nikolas going,’’ Drew asked.
"He's fine. What time would you be coming back?" Killian asked.
"Before the end of the week. the meeting with the army chief anymore." Drew said.
"Alright, we'll be expecting you. Stay safe.’’ Jack said.
Drew nodded, cutting the call. He dumped his phone on a nearby couch, stretching his cramped legs.
"Jack and Killian?" Laura said.
She walked into the living room, coming to sit beside him. Drew gripped her waist, pulling her closer. He breathed in her intoxicating scent, stroking her long jet-black hair.
"You should stop thinking?" she muttered.
"I know but I can't seem to stop.’’ Drew sighed.
"I know it's hard Drew but you should stop thinking about your problems and start thinking about the solution to them,’’ Laura said.
"When did you become a motivational speaker.’’ Drew laughed.
"I'm serious Drew.’’ Laura laughed.
She couldn't help but smile at the way he turned everything into a joke even in dire situations. She loved that about him, his humor and sometimes his friendly banter.
"Yes, I know I should think about the solution to our problems but I already have this covered. Jack and Killian are already on it and it's only a matter of time before they get me answers,’’ he said.
"Okay. I had a lengthy conversation with my friends." Laura said, quietly.
Drew knew something was wrong, especially with the way she gripped his hands tightly. Drew tensed, his thoughts flying about.
"What happened?" he asked.
"They're not coming back anytime soon,’’ Laura said.
Drew sat up, placing her on his lap. He didn't understand what she meant, he knew her friends, the ones she had made in the pack traveled for a long time but not coming back wasn't part of their plan, he was sure of it.
He suddenly had a bad feeling about all of these. How was she sure that her friends were truly her friends? After all, some of them had openly shown their jealousy just because she was his mate. This was something that Drew couldn’t understand. He didn’t know why they were so jealous of her even when some of them had lived better lives than her before.
They didn’t have to deal with the trauma that rape brought, they didn’t have to live in fear of what their stepfather and stepbrother could do. They lived free lives, unlike his mate who was constantly shrouded in fear.
"What do you mean they're not coming back?" Drew said.
He was secretly glad that they wouldn’t be coming back because at that moment, he wasn’t sure about their love for her.
He couldn't understand how they would abandon their friend here knowing fully that this was the time she needed them. It was true what they said. Twenty friends can not play for twenty years.
"Some of them got a new job there and others opened a new business so according to them, there's no need to come back,’’ Laura said.
"But shouldn't they at least come to see how you are doing?.’’ Drew said.
"As long as they've seen me on the t.v and in journals, they're okay with that. Their words, not mine because they think I’m doing okay.’’ Laura said.
"I don't understand any of this but I'll just go with it for now and for your sake,’’ Drew said.
"Thank you. I'll call them some other time so you'll be able to speak to them.’’ Laura said.
"Okay. We'll be going back before the end of this week. I don't quite trust this place anymore, especially with what happened last night.’’ Drew said.
"That's okay,’’ Laura said.
She had no choice in this and she knew she just had to go with it because it was for her safety and that of her mate. Now that the attack has occurred, Laura knew it wouldn’t be long before her stepfather and her stepbrother came knocking. It was as sure as the moon in the clouds and she knew nothing would ever stop that.
"I'm sorry our honeymoon had to end this way, this wasn't my plan at all,’’ Drew said.
"Drew, it's okay. Stuff happens, things don't always go as we planned but the most important thing is that we're safe.’’ Laura said.
"Heck, that's what I'll make sure I do every day of my life. I wouldn't get tired of keeping you safe Laura, you're stuck with me.`` Laura grinned.
"You fiend. What would you like to eat?" she said.
"I don't know, anything you make is fine,’’ Drew said.
"How do toast and bacon sound?" Laura laughed.
"Like heaven."
Laura laughed, rising to her feet as she made her way over to the kitchen. Drew followed her but stopped in his tracks suddenly when Laura fell to the ground. Drew rushed towards her in hopes of breaking her fall but he was too late as she hit her head with a large crack.
"Laura, can you hear me?" Drew screamed.
He shook her violently, trying to wake her up. Her eyes were growing dim like she was about to die. At that moment, Drew noticed the small crack at the side of the window. His mind worked fast and he discovered that Laura was attacked with a poisoned dart that rested by the side of her head.
"Drew.’’ Laura gasped.
"I'm here baby, stay with me.’’ he croaked.
"Leave, leave here immediately. I can feel their presence.’’ Laura stuttered.
"Who?" Drew asked.
"Please just leave,’’ Laura said.
Drew cradled her in his arms, rising to his feet. He ran all the way downstairs with her in his arms. When he got downstairs, he placed her gently in the car. He got in soon, dialing Gabriel's number to get the jet ready.
"Hold on for me baby,’’ Drew said.
Laura remained quiet, fighting the dark abyss that threatened to pull her in. She was seeing things, things she couldn’t make out. It was all so strange and foreign to her, that she couldn’t put a finger on it which left her all the more confused.
She tried to snap out of the dark fog that was threatening to draw her in but she knew she was losing the fight. Everything just felt so strange to her that she had a hard time comprehending it. Laura could only hope that this was not the time of her death.
