Chapter forty five
"There's been a breach.’’ Killian said, running into the room.
Drew rose up from his seat, covering his friend's face with a white cloth that rested on the edge of the bed. He kissed his hands, bidding him that final farewell.
"Shit! He's gone." Jack said, walking into the room.
"Yes, he's gone." Drew said, quietly.
He stared at his friend, remembering all the times he was there for him. He had done so much for son and at times, Drew even wondered if he was human.
"Oh my! May the moon goddess accept his spirit." Killian said, bowing his head a bit.
Drew remained silent for several seconds as he allowed his heart to get used to his friend's demise. He knew that it wouldn't be easy, knowing that this was the only parent he knew for more than half of his years in life.
"Boss... He's gone. We need to move, the attackers are advancing." Jack said, gripping his shoulder.
Drew took a deep breath. He knew he was right and now, it was time to stop mourning and start fighting. His friend has lived his life and now, it was time to live his. He knew that soon, he would be crowned Alpha by the moon goddess and if he wanted to live up to that title, he needed to start acting now.
"Where are the enemies advancing from?’’ Drew said, finally.
"The North wing. I've stationed a lot of security at the entrance of each point so no one gets in or comes out."Killian said.
"Thank you. Do people know of this attack yet?"
"As at this moment, no. We don't want to cause unnecessary fear which may result in a stampede so it's best if they do nothing about it." Jack said.
"Good, that's very good." Drew said, quietly.
At that moment, there were more thunder claps as the rains threatened to fall. Drew touched his friend's legs which had already gone cold. He knew that when he left here, there would be no more thoughts about his friend. It would be a closed chapter in his life and he didn't know if he was ready to begin that chapter.
"Alright, let's go." Drew said.
He walked out of the room, shutting the door firmly behind him. As he made his way towards the North wing in company of his best friends, he could hear bullets raining down on the building. Drew vowed to deal with anyone who didn't want peace to reign especially on a night like this.
"But boss, how do we go out to attack? We're not expected to come out on a night like this for fear of losing our wolves." Killian said.
Drew thought long and hard about this. He knew that he was right but try as he may, he couldn't think of a solution to this.
Just then, an idea popped in his head and he blessed the moon goddess for coming to his rescue when it seemed like he was losing his mind.
"Are all the guests in the grand hall?" he asked.
"Yes." Jack said.
"Perfect. Lock them in, make sure no one comes in or goes out." Drew ordered.
"Already done." Killian said, tapping his phone.
"We're going to lure the attackers to an area where the guests wouldn't get hurt and fight them there. It's better that way." Drew said.
"It's more like we're trapping them in right?’’ Jack said.
"Exactly. We'll divert their attention away from the guests. I need more men, trusted men who would help us. We can do it alone." Drew said.
"I'm on it boss." Jack said.
Few minutes later, several men in suits walked into the room where the trio were. Drew was glad that he requested for additional security as a precautionary measure at the earliest stage now, he had something to fall back on.
"Let's move." Drew ordered.
"Drew!"a voice said.
Drew whipped his head around and discovered it was his mate. Laura walked towards him in all her glory and at that moment, Drew wished he could take her into his arms and show her how much he truly loved her.
"You all proceed, I'll be with you shortly." he said.
The men left the room, battle ready. Laura gripped his hands, staring at him and at that moment, he knew that she had sensed something.
"Alpha Nikolas, your friend?" she croaked.
Drew sighed, stroking her hair. Her instinct was very sharp and once again, he was grateful to be mated to her.
"No. I'm so sorry Drew." Laura sobbed.
"It's okay. He's lived his life and now, it's time to live mine." he smiled, sadly.
Laura kissed him, her tears mixed with his. Drew gripped her tighter, pouring all his pain, love and sadness into that kiss. He was grateful to have someone he could hold, someone he could fall back on when the storm hits the roof.
"I'm coming with you." Laura said.
"No honey, you can't. It's too dangerous." Drew said.
"I don't care. I'm coming with you." she said, stubbornly.
"Laura, please listen to me for once. I'm your Alpha.’’ Drew seethed.
He didn't know why she was so stubborn but deep down, he loved it. Someone like his mate couldn't be fooled easily.
"And I'm your mate. I've got powers too and so I could be a great help." she said.
"You make a good argument. Alright, you can come." Drew said.
That earned him a kiss. He laughed, spinning her in the air. His mate knew just how to lift his spirits and he was grateful for that.
"I knew you'd accept it." Laura giggled.
"That's because you're hard to resist." Drew said.
They walked towards the battle point together, hand in hand. At that moment, Drew knew that nothing could separate them and the love they had for each other. It was deep rooted.
"One more thing, love." Drew said.
"Hmm." Laura smiled.
"I meant what I said earlier, I won't die without your permission," he said.
"I fully intend to keep that promise too." Laura chuckled.
"Then let's go and kick butts." Drew said.
"And then make sure you don't die.’’
"Never without your permission."
****************************
Laura watched him leave and as he walked away, she had a feeling that something drastic was about to occur. Being an Alpha gave her the opportunity to have different feelings, some warning signs of what’s to come while others were just a sign that she should take action.
This time around, the feelings she was having was an action feeling. Something poked her at the back of her mind to take action and that danger wasn’t far behind. Laura could sense something coming for her but try as she may she couldn’t quite place a finger on what that was. Nevertheless, the feeling of danger was there and she was ready.
No matter what it was, she was ready to face it like the Alpha she was. Just then, she heard a loud crash to her far right.
As fast as lightning, she took on a fighting stance as she watched the fume from the crash dissipate. Out of the fume walked out Alpha Jed, her step father and his useless son who had a mocking grin on his face.
‘’Laura! How nice to see you.’’ Alpha Jed smiled.
His fangs gleaned under the powerful rays of the chandelier. Laura took a step back not out of fear but in order to gather momentum incase she wanted to launch at them.
‘’What are you doing at the Banquet?’’ she seethed.
Her step brother cackled, staring at her dead in his eyes. In his eyes, Laura could see hate and lust and also envy.
‘’What a question. It's a banquet after all, why wouldn’t we be here?’’ he smiled.
‘’Get out! Both of you. You have no right to be here.’’ Laura screamed.
Due to her Alpha powers, her voice was amplified, raising it to a few more decibels. The hall where they stood shook under the huge wave of her voice.
‘’Deal with this son, i don’t have time for her.’’ Alpha Jed said before taking off.
Laura had no doubt that he was heading towards where Drew and his friends were. She quickly mind linked him, warning him about the impending danger that was in the form of her step father.
‘’Looks like its me and you now sugar girl.’’ her step brother grinned.
Laura hissed, morphing into her wolf form. She didn’t give him a chance before she pounced on him with all her strength. Being an Alpha and a Beta, she was able to overpower him easily. Try as he may, he couldn’t get her off him.
Laura latched onto him in a vice grip, refusing to let go as he struggled to free himself from her grip. He managed to free himself but the deed had already been done. He was severely injured as she watched him hobble away.
Her plan was not to kill him but to maim him in order to weaken her step father and now that she had done that, she knew the rest of the battle would be somewhat easy.
‘’This is only just the beginning.’’ Laura thundered.
