Chapter fifty four
Drew drove to the club like a man who was on a mission. He was on a mission because he wanted to know what Laura's clan had been in all this while. He got to the club soon as he made his way to his office where he met his friends waiting.
"What's up?" Drew said.
He took a seat, pulling out a bottle of cognac. He snatched a cup from the cup holder as he mixed a drink for himself.
"Tone down on the drink, you might want to stay sober for the news,'' Jack muttered.
"Just say it, I've handled bad news better when I'm dead drunk,'' Drew said.
Killian chuckled, snatching the bottle of cognac from him. Drew protested and pleaded but they paid deaf ears to him.
"Alright, fine what have you got?", Drew asked.
"Laura's pack works with the government,'' Jack said.
Drew expected this but it still surprised him to know that they were involved in the creation of poisons. He didn't know if he could tell his mate this news but he knew he had to because if he didn't and she found out elsewhere, it could spell trouble for him.
"Shit! Shit!" Drew growled.
He rose to his feet, completely forgetting about his drink. Killian was right, he needed to stay sober for this.
"What else is there? Why do I have a feeling that's not the last of it,'' he said.
"You're right. Sources also say that they're still in the act of creating poisons and what's worse, Alpha Jed inserts a small bit of poison into his drugs that slowly kills anyone who takes it.'' Killian said.
"This is bad, guys this is very bad. We have to stop them.'' Drew said.
"We can't, well not for now. They have the backing of some corrupt government officials.'' Jack said.
"Fucking Jed again. Why does everything have to return to him.'' Drew snapped.
"Our archenemy is involved in so many dubious activities so I'm not surprised,'' Killian said.
"We have to stop them by all means. For fucks sake, they're killing people and nobody knows about it.''Drew seethed.
"Right now, we still don't know where they are hiding but I'm looking. I'll get an answer soon you hear me.'' Jack said.
"Please, try harder man. I can't live with it, knowing that people are dying slowly and no one knows about it.'' Drew said.
"We'll get to the root of this but for now Drew, I think you should sit down for this next part Drew,'' Killian said.
From the look in his friend's eyes, he knew that what they were about to say was serious and required him to sit down.
"Has Laura ever told you about her lineage? I mean, anything other than her parents?" Killian asked.
Drew thought long and hard about this. He didn't see the relation on why they would ask this question but he knew there was a reason behind it. His friends were on to something and he couldn't wait to discover what it was.
"No, she hasn't. Asides from who are parents are and what they did before they died, there isn't any other thing.'' Drew said.
"Drew this might come as a shock but those people are not Laura's biological parents,'' Killian said.
For several minutes, Drew remained silent thinking over their words. He didn't know what to think or say and simply opted to remain silent. Never in his wildest dreams could he have imagined this, it was completely out of the blues.
"Wow! I mean wow! How did you guys get to know this.'' Drew said.
"Through one of my sources that were very close to them before they died. Drew, it's been there all along but we were too blind to see it.'' Jack said.
"How? I don't understand.'' Drew said.
"You might not know this but they are humans, full-blooded humans. They have no atom of wolf or magic streak within them which begs the question who then are Laura's parents and how did she get to the house of those people.'' Killian said.
Drew was confused, this was completely above him. He had no idea who his mate's parents were and he knew she wouldn't have any idea either. It seemed as if to Drew that every day of his life, secrets were revealed.
"Laura has never told me anything more about her parents besides what they did and where they worked. I'm very sure, she knows nothing about this too.'' Drew said.
"That's our guess too but we have to find out who our parents are. And please, for the love of anything you serve, make sure no one hears about this, especially the council of elders. If they do, Drew I'm afraid you have to kiss your coronation goodbye because the council of elders would never crown an heir whose Delta's parents are unknown. They consider it a taboo.'' Jack said.
"What kind of rule is that?" Drew seethed.
"I didn't make it, it's there in the big book of wolves,'' Jack said.
Drew sighed, slumping to his seat. He grabbed the bottle of cognac, downing it straight from the bottle. His friends didn't bother to stop him because they knew he needed it, anyone who had just heard that information needed something strong to take it all in.
"What do I do now? I can't possibly tell Laura this, she'll be crushed.'' Drew said.
"I don't mean to sound insensitive right now but I don't think it's Laura we should be worried about now,'' Killian said.
"What do you mean?" Jack said.
"I mean, we should be more worried about Jed and what he'll do with this information if he gets his hands on it. If he gets a hold of this information, he'll sabotage the coronation and would waste no time in informing the council of elders. If in the end, it's discovered to be true I'm afraid Drew, you would lose the title.'' Killian said.
"Shit! Who then becomes the leader of the entire kingdom?'' Drew asked.
"Jed. He's the next in line to the throne even though he's in a rival pack. If anything happens to you according to the big book of wolves. So you see that's why he's doing everything to destroy you and everything you've built. In the end, it all boils down to the throne.'' Killian said.
If Drew could summon the moon goddess that instant, he would have gone for it but he couldn't because she had warned him that she wouldn't be there every time to answer his calls and he had to man up and face issues as they came.
Drew rose to his feet, he needed to go home to clear his head. He was going to tell Laura, he had decided. She deserved to know what was going on and besides, if she knew about it, they could search for her real parents together.
"I'll see you guys soon. Please, keep me posted if anything else comes out okay .''Drew said.
He left the club, heading towards his house. As he drove home, he thought about the best way he could break the news to Laura without hurting her feelings. There was no way but to tell her how it was. He hoped that she didn't take it too seriously and ended up blaming herself for something that wasn't her fault. Drew knew he couldn't live with that.
This would not only crush her but she could doubt everything and everyone that had been in her life since. She would be confused about what was true and what was fake. Drew knew he couldn’t allow that but with the kind of person Laura was, he did not doubt that she might discover this soon.
She was an Alpha and getting information was not going to be a problem. She had done it before and Drew knew she would do it again if it required that.
‘’gods! Is this a test?’’ Drew asked.
He couldn’t help but think that all this was a test and his ancestors were just trying to see how strong he was. Drew couldn’t help but think that if this was a test, what were the chances that he wouldn’t face a bigger one in the future.
Back home, Laura was feeling uncomfortable. She couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was but there was this feeling within her that something wasn’t right. She couldn’t place a finger on what it was but she couldn’t deny the fact that the feeling was there and it was growing steadily. She sighed, looking into space.
Whatever it was, Laura was determined to get to the root of it and stop whatever evil thing was threatening to break to the surface.
