Chapter seventy two
Back at the club, Drew instructed his friends to take care of the evacuation process as he had to get back to the office for something important.
As he walked into his building, he stopped to think for a minute that he hadn't been here for some time. The private club was like his office and Drew couldn't explain it but he was more comfortable there than in any other place.
"Good day sir.'' the secretary said.
Drew had missed the trusty old face he had come to respect. The young chap kept the company running smoothly without little to no problem and for that, Drew was grateful.
"How are you?" Drew asked.
"Very fine Sir, thank you. There are some files I left on your table that need your attention as soon as possible", he said.
"Alright, I'll look through it and send it back,'' Drew said.
He walked towards his office, shutting the door behind him. He shrugged off his jacket, hanging it on the chair. He took his seat on his office chair, going through the files his secretary had left for him. He looked through the files, sorting out the ones that needed his attention whilst leaving the others.
Soon, he got to a letter that looked particularly intimidating. Drew breathed in the scent, trying to find out who sent it but he got nothing as the scent was dead to the world.
"Why is this happening again?" his wolf growled.
"I don't know. The last time this happened, nothing really serious took place but this time around, I'm a bit anxious.'' Drew said.
"The only way we can find out is if we open it.'' his wolf said.
Drew felt the edges of the letter but he still couldn't find anything. The only thing he could feel was a thin sheet of paper that lay within the envelope and Drew knew it was a letter.
Without thinking, Drew tore the letter to reveal what was inside. What he saw left him confused and a bit worried. Inside the letter was a print, a small paw print, and Drew knew it belonged to a female wolf.
He took the letter from its holder, reading what was written on it. When he finished reagin through, he sat there numb and cold. The letter was from Jed and this just confirmed to Drew that Jack's sister had died.
The bloodied paw print was her's and Drew had a feeling that that was her last moment on earth.
"I can't show this to Jack,'' Drew said.
"You have to, imagine if he finds out somewhere else.'' his wolf said.
"I don't care if he finds out somewhere else, but he sure as hell isn't going to hear it from me,'' Drew said.
His heart was heavy as he mourned the loss of his friend's sister. Drew knew that Jack would be crushed and his rage would blind him into doing something wrong.
"Suit yourself Drew but I'll just advise you to do the right thing.'' his wolf said.
Drew remained quiet as his mind raced through all the things he could do to break the news to his friend. He took the letter, placing it back inside the envelope and he decided to deal with it much later when he was composed.
"Sir, you have a guest.'' his receptionist said through the intercom.
"Who is it?" Drew asked.
"A man.'' he said.
"Alright, send him in,'' Drew said.
He wasn't going to disturb the poor boy who was requesting to see him. Drew had concluded within himself that anyone who crossed him would be dealt with and it looked like this stranger would be the first.
"Hello sir.'' a voice said.
Drew whipped his head up to see a fairly tall man walk towards his table. Drew had never seen him before and he wondered what business the man had here in his office.
"Yes, what can I do for you?"Drew asked.
The man took a seat opposite Drew, smiling sadly. Drew sniffed the air and he knew that this man was a human but the way he behaved showed that he wasn't pure.
"You know, it's bold of you to sit down when I didn't invite you to,'' Drew said.
"By the time I tell you why I'm here, you'll appreciate my coming.'' the man said.
As Drew stared at him more closely, he discovered that this man was older than he looked.
"Alright, let's get down to business. What do you want?" Drew said.
"I'm a doctor.'' the man said.
Drew was more confused as he stared at the man. There was nothing to indicate whether he was truly a doctor or not as the only thing that stood out in his body was the white mass of hair that sat atop his head.
"And?" Drew asked.
"I was the one who delivered Laura from her biological mother,'' he said.
It seemed like a thunderbolt had hit Drew as he stared incredulously at the strange man. Drew had never expected to hear this and the man sitting down here was not joking.
"How? Do you have any idea where her parents might be?" Drew asked.
That was the only thing he was concerned about. He didn't know what this man would reveal and he readied himself for what he might say.
"I'm sorry to say but she died.'' the doctor said.
Drew gripped the table, trying to reign down the surge of emotions that threatened to burst through him. He had received two devastating news within the space of twenty minutes and he didn't know if he could handle more.
"When did this happen? Tell me everything, I don't understand.''Drew said.
"It happened some twenty-five years ago. She died while birthing her and the dirty Alpha Jed killed her father before forcefully claiming her as his.'' he spat.
"Why? Why would he do something like this, knowing fully well that the truth would come back to bite him.'' Drew sighed.
"Sometimes, the ways of humans aren't understood.'' the doctor said.
Drew stared at the man and he knew that what he said held more weight than everything he had been saying.
"You aren't human?" Drew asked.
"Far from it", the man chuckled.
"Then what are you?" Drew asked.
"I'm a celestial being and I've delivered my message,'' he said.
He vanished into thin air and Drew sat back on his chair, staring into space.
***************************
"No way man, you've got to tell her. She deserves to know everything.'' Killian said.
After the mysterious man left, Drew had driven straight to the club. He needed to talk to someone about this and the only people he could trust were his friends.
"Where's Jack?" Drew asked.
"Behind the building. He went there for a smoke.'' Killian said.
"Alright. Listen, man, there's something else.'' Drew said.
"What's up? What's the problem?" Killian said.
From the look on his friend's face, he knew that something else was going on. He had never seen Drew look so distressed and confused all at the same time.
"It's Jack's sister,'' Drew said.
"Wait! Don't tell me she's dead?'' Killian said.
"She is. I got a letter from Jed today.'' Drew sighed.
He fished inside his pocket for the letter, handing it over to Killian who read through with a horrified look on his face.
"Oh my gosh! Jack is going to be crushed.'' Killian said.
"That's why we must keep this a secret at least until the battle with Jed is over,'' Drew said.
"No man! This is too big of a secret to keep away from him, I suggest we tell him so he'll know about it.'' Killian said.
"We'll tell him after the battle. We know how he is, he'll react so badly this city wouldn't contain his anger.'' Drew said.
"This is so bad. Why on Earth is this happening to us now?" Killian croaked.
"This was part of the challenges the moon goddess warned us about. Killian, we have to be strong, that's the only thing we can do.'' Drew said.
They remained silent as each sat there with their thoughts. Drew was crushed by the news of Laura's parent's death and he was devastated by Jack's sister's death. Now, he knew beyond all reason that he had to destroy Jed and his entire pack if they were to survive another day in this city.
It was the only thing they could do to end this madness Jed and his pack had caused. Right now, Drew's next mission was to inform Laura about what had happened and he could only hope she took it boldly lest his world was about to become a whirlwind of sadness.
They had suffered a lot, Laura in particular and Drew didn't know if she could take any more bad news. It was just too much for one person to bear. Alpha Jed had done the worse and there was no telling what he had up his sleeves.
