He gulped hard. He put his face on my chest as he uttered, “Oh, Ann.” Then he gave me kisses on my heaving chest and stomach. He tightened his grip on my fingers. “Ann. Ann. Ann.”

“Is that a yes or a no?”

“Arianna, this is Marc.”

“Hi, Marc.” I did not expect a call from Marc, to be honest. Today was supposed to be my break from the clinical study.

“Are you okay?” he asked because he heard my cracked voice.

“Yep. Just insomnia,” I lied so fluently, “So, I just woke up. What’s up?”

“Umm… I’m really sorry to have to call you in today,” he said, “But Mateo won’t go with the procedure today unless you’re here.”

At the mention of Mateo, I completely sobered up. Well, not entirely, but I was more alert.

“Alright. I’ll come by in thirty minutes.”
