Chapter 32 Distracting Chris' attention
Eight o'clock in the evening, Chris was still in the company and he looks at his phone from time to time.
Janice noticed that and the young man's attention was not on her even though she had been speaking to him and was trying to impress him.
"I told you, that sister of mine will never change. She can't let go of her bad habit of hanging out with anyone at night."
"I know you and my wife are not on good terms, but it's still not right for you to continue to try to discredit her to me." He rebuked Janice in irritation. He is in a bad mood since both Bheng and Nica could not be contacted.
"Sorry, I just worry about you because you're my friend and I don't want to see you miserable because of my sister." Janice sounded sad and disappointed.
Chris could not feel conscience for Janice's concern and the way he acted. Nica occupies his mind right now and he is worried about her.
Janice was frowning when she leaves the young man's side and join the other employees, who were with them.
Chris wiped his face with his palm when Bheng still did not answer his call. His wife's was turned off, so he could not contact her too. He knows his friend, Larry, was busy performing on their stage so he could not be contacted either. But he had already sent him a message to find out where his cousin was.
"Sorry, Bro, I just got my cell phone. I'm busy entertaining your wife here, do you two have a problem and she seems sad again?"
Chris did not understand anything in Larry's question. What only sank in on his mind was his wife was there. He felt very relieved when he knew his wife was in a good place.
"What do I do with her? She doesn't look like she has an appetite and she's not even touching her food. I also notice that perhaps she's looking for someone or expecting to see someone on the stage." Larry said to his friend.
"Don't take your eyes off of her." He strictly ordered his friend whilst looking for his coat.
"Looks like she's about to leave, Bro."
Chris stopped wearing his coat and his attention got split when one of the staff called him.
"She's paying her bills now and asking someone to pack the food," Larry reported Nica's every move to him.
"Don't let her suspect you, follow her until she gets home. Make sure she'll be home safely. We'll just finish this last layout and I'll go home afterward." He said to Larry and took off his coat again.
Larry approached Nica after he cut off his call with Chrismith.
"You're leaving now?" He greeted the young lady even though she looks like she does not plan to talk with anyone.
Nica stared at the person in front of her and recognize him before she answered. "Yes." She replied nonchalantly.
"Did you bring a car with you?" Larry asked again when she stood up. "My friend wants to send you home if you want because he's worried and it's evening."
Nica stopped walking and turned to face him. "He's here?" she did not think of asking who was that friend he was talking about.
Larry smiled at the young lady, his hunch was right that it was his friend she was looking for. "Nope, but he's willing to come and drive you home if you want?"
"He knows that I was here right now?" Nica suddenly felt energetic.
"He's also looking for you, but I didn't have the chance to answer his call earlier."
Nica suddenly thinks of something.
"I mean, I happened to mention you to him when I talked to him." Larry quickly explained to the young lady.
"Thank you, but I brought a car with me."
Larry hurried to follow Nica when she turned her back on him. He used his motorcycle so he can easily follow her. He was astonished when he saw where she brought the packed foods.
Chris smiled when he saw the picture that Larry sent to him. He zoomed his wife's face, even though it was a long shot, the delight on her face can still be seen. Her smile was so genuine whilst she was talking with beggars. He replied to Larry and put his phone back in his trousers' pocket again.
"Chris, I've been calling you," Janice said while frowning when she went near him.
"Do you need something?" Chris' forehead furrowed and he did not like how she approaches him from time to time. Whenever he would touch his phone, she has many reasons to stop him from using it to call someone.
"Will you check this?" Janice ignored the young man's harshness. She will do anything to distract him and make him temporarily forget her half-sister.
"I'll leave that thing to you. I'm expecting that tomorrow, half of it will be ready."
"You're going home now?" Janice asked him, instead of opposing what he wanted to happen. He did not even glance at her and he was busy fixing his things on the table.
"Yes!" Chris answered shortly and quickly took out his phone from the pocket of his trouser when it vibrated.
"She's now driving her way home," Larry informed Chris through a text message.
Janice's inner self was mad whilst she secretly peeks at Chris' phone to know who he was chatting with. But she did not see it because he quickly turned his phone off.
"I'll go with you!" Janice said when she could not think of any other way to get his attention.
Chris sighed and stared at Janice.
"My cousin borrowed my car earlier. His car broke down and he has a date, so I let him have mine for the meantime." Janice explained to him.
Chris did not have another choice but to wait for Janice. It took almost half an hour before they could finally leave.
When they get home, Nica's car was still not there, which worried Chrismith. Throughout the ride, he did not have a chance to open his phone. Aside from Janice's babbling that he did not give any attention to, he was assured because his friend was following his wife.
"My sister hasn't really changed, even though she's married, it's impossible for her to stop her bad habits. You just got married, but she managed to go out with her friends who don't even care about their lives."
Chris ignored what Janice was saying against his wife. He hurried to go inside to call his friend. But his plan was delayed when he saw the young lady's parents in the living room.
"Good that you two are here now." Margaret looks worried.
"Is there a problem, Ma?" Janice asked before she kissed her mother's cheek.
"Dad?" Janice greeted her father curiously. He was sitting and clenching his fist. He was obviously holding back his anger.
"I don't know what to do with your sister, I'm afraid your father will hurt her when she comes back," Margaret said worriedly and she could not look at Chris.
"What's wrong with my wife?" Chris' forehead furrowed and he did not like what he heard and sees.
"I'm sorry, Chris, if even you, got involved in my daughter's messy life." Alfonso apologized to Chris.
"What exactly happened?" Janice asked in confusion to her parents, while Chris remained calm.
"Your very nice sister never considered being ashamed towards Chrismith's family! She can't stand it and wasted money again with your cousin!" Margaret was furious and she said the last word with particular force.
Chris' head suddenly heated up at what he heard, not for Nica, but at Janice's mother's accusation. He did not want to think that Philip approached the young lady again and without him knowing.
"Maybe you're wrong, Aunt? I know Nica couldn't waste money, particularly, to have an affair!" He contradicted Margaret's accusation of his wife as he holds back his anger.
Margaret sniggered before she answered the young man. "You're pitiful, Hijo. You're kind and you don't really know that girl fully, but you instantly fell for her." Margaret's face saddened while she was looking at Chrismith.
"Margaret!" Alfonso rebuked his wife, he was thinking of a way for her daughter to not be discredited to Chris, but she is doing the opposite.
"You're defending your ill-mannered daughter again?" Margaret said to her husband angrily. "Isn't those pictures you saw, enough?"
"Oh my God!" Janice covered her mouth with her palm whilst holding a picture she picked up on the floor. "Is this for real, Ma?" She asked her mother in disbelief as she looked at the picture Nica took with her cousin.
Chris snatched the picture Janice was holding. He squinted as he stared at it. He saw other photos as well besides their father and he took them. The photo was taken in a casino and it looks like an old picture, according to the date in it too. He knew the latest one was just taken this evening that made his heart skip a beat.
"Chris, don't leave, what if something happens to you?" Janice stopped the young man when he attempted to leave and he looks mad.
"Don't be carried away by your anger, Hijo. I already called my nephew and he promised that he'll send Nica home now." Margaret said calmly to Chris.
"I can't promise, but I'm going to kill your nephew if he does anything to my wife!" His jaw was clenching and so are his fists. He quickly took out his phone when it vibrated.
"What the hell was happening?" He yelled at Larry when he answered the call.
"I'll explain later. Wait for your wife outside and take her away from that dude who's planning something bad against her."
Chris ended the call without saying anything and went out of the door with big footsteps.
Janice and her mother looked at each other and they were both confused about who Chris was talking with on the phone.
Janice ran toward Chris. "Chris, my cousin isn't at fault here."
Chris furiously turned to look at Janice. "And who's at fault, my wife?!" He gritted his teeth as he was controlling his anger and he clenched his jaw.
Janice was taken aback by the anger in Chris' eyes. What makes her anxious is that he is angry at her cousin and not at Nica.
