The attack
Selina gazed at the alarm clock situated on the nightstand, she noticed it was getting to thirty minutes George had left in search of what was going on.
She was aware it might be nothing or maybe it was the natural resources the village boasted of the intruders as George had said were in search of.
Even though she had not seen it, rumours had it that Sandwestmorr was a place filled with varieties of natural resources.
However, it was hidden from human sight and it was said only the person found worthy would be able to see it as well as use it.
Selina was jarred out of her thoughts as the door went ajar.
Startled, she gazed at her husband, George, who had a wild look on his angular face.
"Take him and get out of here!" He barked before she could say a word.
He snatched their son, Trevor from the tiny mat he was still sleeping on and dumped him roughly in Selina's arms, then shoved her out of the hut.
"What is going on?!" Selina asked, gazing at George with rounded leafy green eyes.
She held onto Trevor as he stirred awake.
"I don't think there is time for any questions here! You need to get the hell out of here as soon as you can. I will hold them off the best way."
"Hold who off, I don't understand what you are…"
"They!" George shoved his hand into his hair and grunted.
"Oh!" Selina exclaimed as realization dawned on her.
"No-no!" She added, walking toward George and glaring up at him. "You don't expect me to leave here without you!"
"I have no choice! I am trying to save you and our baby. Is that too much to ask?!" George scowled.
He shoved his hand into his hair in frustration and kicked at the door before growling.
"We offended no one. If they see we are a peaceful family, living alone, they won't bother us." Selina reasoned but George shook his head.
"This is different. It isn't like the villagers that often spared our lives after seeing his cute face." George twisted his lips and grimaced.
A bitter laugh escaped from his mouth and he gripped his side as the laughter turned hysterical.
Selina breathed in and out, before stepping toward him. "It can't be that different…" She tried again but he cut her off.
"You don't get it?!" He snapped, scowling at her.
Selina flinched whilst gazing into his slate grey eyes which had darkened. "They f**king know about me! They are coming here because of me."
"How sure are you about…"
"I heard them. I f**king heard them! They are coming to wipe this lineage."
"Oh, gods!" Selina shuddered at the bitterness in George's words.
She saw the fury as well as hopelessness in his dark brown eyes as she gazed at him.
"What do we do?"
***************
George Hanson had spent forty-six years of his existence in Sandwestmorr. Although he wasn't born in the village, it was for his ancestors and part of his inheritance as well.
Sandwestmorr is a village in the heart of Sechester. The people mainly deal with farming as a profession, until Scavengers began to invade them due to the natural resources the town boasted of, then they took hunting as a profession.
George was part of the hunters because of his powerful physique- He was 6 feet tall, he had toned muscles, dark long hair reaching his shoulder, and brilliant blue eyes.
Also, he had inborn agility and strength that never fades even if he when exhausted.
Now, the hunters of Sandwestmorr were subdivided into four groups, the trackers, the strengths, the escapers, and the Strategizers.
Even though George could fit into any group easily, he was part of the hunting group called 'The Strength'.
Aside from being a hunter, he was a protector. He often sensed what was to come and let the villagers know beforehand so they could strategize before any attack.
Before his power came forth, he had lived a peaceful life until the age of eighteen. That was when he triggered what was known as a 'curse'.
The villagers noticed that he had begun to exhibit the same characteristics and weirdness as his father and the ones before his father. But then, they didn't confront him since they believed he meant no harm and they had accepted him as one of them because he always thought of them first before himself.
It wasn't until they noticed their livestock reducing drastically, that they became suspicious of him and even watched him more closely.
George assumed he would live his life in total darkness because he didn't see himself as human anymore as he began to feast on not only animals but unsuspecting humans as well.
But then, he met Selina Craig, the daughter of Sandwestmorr Chief.
She was a proper lady and every man's dream. Her oval-shaped face and inviting smile were what people often noticed first when they sighted her.
George never believed he could catch the attention of such beauty until she began to converse with him.
He and Selina fell in love with each other and she accepted him even after knowing who he was and he felt at peace.
Again, the peace he felt in Sandwestmorr wasn't long when the villagers eventually found out who he was after they caught him feeding on the remnants of a dead animal.
He was chased out of the village, hence his arrival in the most secluded part of the village.
Selina had gone with him as well because she had declined her parents' request of having nothing to do with him, hence she was disowned.
Still, despite being chased out of the main village, he had their best interest and protected them.
George and his family had been at peace. Although on some occasions some of the villagers had approached them angrily, they had always left after seeing Trevor.
He believed Trevor was a gift from the moon goddess herself and he was a symbol of protection to them.
But he doubted he'd be able to protect them now.
The people coming at them weren't just soldiers, he had perceived some weird scents on them when he got closer to them. He didn't know what the odd scent was, but he assumed it had something to do with magic.
Even though it had been a while since he saw someone with magic, he could still differentiate between a normal human and someone that had magic in them.
"We can negotiate with them. Don't you think so?"
George snapped out of his thoughts and his eyes went towards Selina as she bundled Trevor's things together. He was aware there was nothing they could negotiate about what was going on and what would happen soon.
He had heard them talk about coming for the natural resource which Sandwestmorr boasted of, and him as well because they thought he would make a good specimen for whatever they were researching on.
Again, he had heard the man who he believed to be the leader, bark out some orders to kill whoever was with him and capture him alive.
George sighed, shaking his head.
If Selina and Trevor were far from him, he wouldn't have bothered because he believed he could take them on.
However, it was different.
"You aren't answering my questions,"
George's ears perked up at Selina's complaint and they picked up another sound as well.
He listened closely and he realized it was the sound of feet sprinting towards them.
"What now?!" Selina asked, seeing the bewildered look on his face.
She rolled her eyes and settled Trevor on her hips as they continued walking in the inviting forest.
"They are here." George gritted his teeth. "We are out of time."
