Emily Gordon
I hold tight to my only suitcase containing only a third of my stuff inside and I fight back the tears that want to blind me.
I won't cry... No more crying, Emily! Be a woman!
I take a deep breath and continue walking aimlessly through the streets of my city looking for a cheap place to spend the night, the previous one I managed to hide in a neighbor's garden.
Why do so many bad things happen to me?
Finally I find a bus stop and sit down to rest a bit, I take the opportunity to look in my pocket for my cell phone to check what time it is, but I remember that I had to sell it to have some money in my hands after being evicted of the house where he lived, for not being able to pay last month's rent. So far so good, if the owner of the house wasn't my father.
He was simply upset that I found him cheating on his wife - my stepmother - and told her everything. If there's one thing I hate more than being out in the middle of the street alone, in the cold, with nowhere to go in the middle of the night, it's treacherous people pretending to be something they're not.
I rest my head on the iron bar that holds the roof of the bus stop in an attempt to contain the tears that seem to want to suffocate me. My own father! My blood! How dare he throw me out of the house without letting me take anything more than a suitcase? He knew I had nowhere to go, that I would wander aimlessly, that I had no one to turn to.
Maybe he thought I could count on Adam, my boyfriend until this morning, but the idiot sent me looking for a cheap hotel to stay. I just remember sending him to hell and on the way out I bumped into a pretty woman at the door, it dawned on me that I was being cheated on with just a damn month of dating!
Everything would be easier if I could just rent another house, but being unemployed doesn't go into debt. My boss fired me after I came to the defense of Hybrids when he was saying horrible things about them. They never were and never will be guilty of being fined with animal DNA against their will and to be honest I don't regret sending him to shit.
I just hate men, they are all liars and big ignorant assholes!
I never knew what it was to love or be loved, I never got anyone to really care about me until I was ten years old and was taken in by an amazing woman who showed me I mattered, before that I was living door to door being rejected and how everything in life has to be harder for me, the woman I've come to call mom passed away a few weeks ago, my chest hurts remembering.
A tear managed to escape, but I quickly wiped it away. I get up and start walking again, I need to get to the hotel that someone in the city pointed out to me, he said it was the cheapest and at the moment everything that doesn't cost a lot of money is what I need.
After walking for almost a full hour, a movement out of the corner of my eye catches my attention, the place I'm at is remote, full of trees around and with a dense forest on both sides of the road. My heart races with fear taking over me, whatever it is in the woods at this hour, it can't be a good thing, so my instincts say.
I move away from my suitcase a little, if I have to run I won't be able to go very far with weight in my hands. My life is worth much more than a few belongings and pieces of clothing. I frantically look around for more moves that indicate I'm going to be attacked by something or someone.
A growl sounds in the woods behind me, I instinctively move forward with my heart hammering in my chest, it's dark, there's only one streetlight shining and to tell you the truth it's not helping much. Branches in the forest begin to break, anyone walking on them is too heavy to make such a specific noise.
I look down at my suitcase, hesitating whether to try to take it or not as I break into a run. I hear a growl coming from where the weeds have moved, a shiver runs down my spine, it's fierce and wild. Screw the suitcase! I run in the opposite direction of the noise.
The thing that made the noise also starts running, I knew this when the branches started to break as I ran, something is chasing me. I avoid at all costs turning my head to look at what I'm running from, I'm terrified.
I hear a loud growl, but this time it comes from the opposite side as someone chasing me. I want to scream for help, but I doubt if there is any house in these surroundings and also the fear of attracting the predator even more to me is greater.
My legs are already getting tired, I'm running as fast as I can about to collapse and in no time I stopped hearing the branches breaking inside the bush. The street is getting darker and darker with very little lighting, I let out a groan of pain when a stone on the way makes me trip and fall to the ground.
Right from the start a burning sensation in my knee and elbows is if My mind goes dizzy for a few seconds before I gather my strength to get up and run again, there was no time. When I look up, I see a four-legged animal that reminds me of a tiger, but its appearance is beyond terrifying.
His huge fangs are showing, eyes of such an intense blue color that I've never seen the same, and the angry expression of someone ready to devour me.
Panic hits me hard. I will die. I had lost my mother a few weeks ago, my father had thrown me out of the house, and now I was going to die torn to pieces by a wild animal in the middle of a dark road. No one would look for me, no one would miss me... I would just disappear into an animal's stomach forever.
The animal growls getting closer and closer to me until its claws are just a few centimeters from my legs, I close my eyes paralyzed by fear and dread, it feels like my soul has left my body, hot tears slide down my cheeks and I can only wait for the first bite that will tear my skin.
A second later another scary growl resounds right next to where I am, I force myself to open my eyes when I realize it's not coming from the cat that wants to swallow me. Now ready, I'm going to be split in half. I watch as the animal backs away from me.
I startle when my body is lifted off the ground abruptly.
- Calm down, I got you. You can trust me. - a distinctly thick, very masculine voice says.
My mind spins in pure confusion, I am in the arms of a man, very big and strong who now runs with me into the forest. My eyes fill with tears wetting the chest of the man my head is squeezed into, the shock of knowing I was about to die is too much for my heart and I can't hold back the crying crisis anymore.
I don't know who was taking me into the woods or what he's going to do with me afterwards, he could be someone bad, but someone bad wouldn't save me from being killed by a giant tiger. No matter who it is, he saved my life and I'm grateful for that.
The man runs with me for a few minutes until he stops, I look ahead and we are in front of a two-story wooden house, it resembles a chalet and a cabin, but it is a house, perhaps a combination of the three tastes.
- I'll leave her here, don't worry, I won't hurt you. He releases me and pulls my trembling hand through the door with me.
His breathing was normal as he gently released me before we walked in, it didn't even look like he just ran with me in his arms for almost five minutes. Only then do I realize how he ran at a speed out of the ordinary for a normal man. I barely have time to blink or look at him, a second after getting me to safety he's out and locks the door from the outside.
I run to the window and watch with strange fascination and wonder how quickly he disappeared through the trees again. My mind starts working moments later... That's it! Everything indicates that he is... Oh my God! He can only be a Hybrid!
