Chapter 31
Annika
I joined Caroline in the kitchen several minutes after Andro left the room. I'd stayed behind to watch a rerun of the first episode of a Korean series; City Hunter.
After I was done with that episode, I took a bath and went downstairs. Caroline was also just rounding up in the kitchen.
"Do you need me to do anything else?" I asked as I finished rinsing the last cup of tea. I volunteered to help her clean up the kitchen as soon as I got here. Even though she disagreed at first, I had to be very persuasive to get her to agree.
"No dear, that is enough. Let's move to the living room" She passed me the napkin to clean the water off my hand. I followed her out of the kitchen once I was done.
We walked into the living area and sat on one of the sofas. The television was on and Maleficent was showing. She reduced the volume of the movie and stared at me.
"Are you related to Boss?" She suddenly asked.
I furrowed my eyebrow, "Boss? Who is Boss?"
"Sorry dear, I mean Amdro" She specified.
"No. I'm just his girlfriend," I replied, telling her the same lie Andro had told me to say.
I could've told her I was his sister and not his girlfriend. Never have I imagined myself dating someone like Andro. Andro is a good person and he's handsome but still, he's a little bit off-limits for me.
"Wow! That's great darling. This is the first time I'll see any lady with him. You're such a lucky girl" She pinched my cheek and I smiled.
A fake smile.
"Where did you guys meet?"
No way!
"Ah, we met at a party," I replied nervously.
"Boss never attends any party, so what type of a party was that?"
"He didn't attend. He was passing by and he saw me at the party. It wasn't a party like that, it's like a boy band having their performance and I was there with friends"
I explained roughly, not even understanding what the hell it was that I was explaining.
"Ooh, I get you, Annika. I guess I'll ask Boss himself when he gets back. It appears you don't talk much"
I laughed awkwardly, "Exactly ma'am. You got it right"
This is exactly why I don't like talking to people.
Several minutes passed and we were both focused on the movie. She was smiling and had all different emotions on her face at intervals as she was engrossed in the movie while I could only force myself to focus as a lot of things ran through my mind.
"Is there a phone around here that I can use?" I asked Caroline.
"You don't have a phone"
"I lost it on my way here" I half lied. I haven't lost it, I threw it away.
"You can use my phone. It's on the table over there," She pointed to the dining area.
I stood up and walked over to the table. As I saw the phone, I picked it up and dialed the number that had been on my mind since I got here.
"Hello," It felt like ages since I last heard her voice and I couldn't say a word.
"Hello! Who is there?"
"Galina," I whispered.
"Oh my God, Annika. Where the hell have you been?"
She yelled.
"I've been fine, Galina. How about you?"
"I've been dead worried, Anni. I've looked everywhere for you. Your mom said you left home angrily for no reason and you were probably cooling off at your boyfriend's place. I can't believe I just filed a missing person case for you just now"
We both laughed.
"I think you should go back and tell them I'm fine," I advised her.
"I'm turning around right now," she replied happily.
"Where the hell have you been? Are you fine? Is everything okay? What happened Anni?" She asked in one breath. It's obvious that she's worried about me. After what I overheard, my mother still had the guts to tell everyone I ran off to a man's house.
Yeah, she might be right to an extent because I'm actually in a man's house. A man whose touch affects me in an unexplainable manner. A man whose endearments are something I'm always looking forward to. A face that brings a smile to my face. The same man that saved me when her actions had pushed me to a dead point.
"Are you there, Annika?" She asked, pulling me out of my train of thoughts.
"Yes, I'm fine. I'm totally fine. I'll see you later, Galina. I promise you that,"
"Why don't I come wherever you are?"
"That isn't necessary. I'll come back soon, okay? We'll talk then. I'll call you with another line soon, don't call this number back. It’s not mine,"
"Okay but?"
I didn't wait for her to say anything else before I dropped the call and stormed into my room, locking the door behind me. I was pissed off at my mother, my stepfather, my pathetic life, and everything.
I hate myself for being weak.
I sat on a bed after I'd cooled down for a while and turned on the TV. There's nothing else that I need other than something to take my mind off everything.
It was a little bit past nine when Andro walked back through the door. He was holding his suit jacket in his hand while his tie was nowhere to be found. He looked tired.
I stood up from the couch that I laid on and walked closer to him.
"How was it?"
He only replied with a sound and dropped the suit jacket on the bed, as he started removing his shoes.
"Caroline said you lost your phone,"
He stretched a bag to me and as I opened it, it was a phone.
"You didn't have to but thank you so much"
"You're welcome,"
"Should I get you something to eat?"
He stared at me.
"If I'm hungry, I'll sort it out myself" His response was somehow harsh.
"Caroline asked how we met earlier and I told her it was at a party," I said, biting my tongue.
"Don't worry about that, I'll take care of it,"
"Is everything okay, Andro?" I asked.
"Yes, Annika. Everything is fine except that a missing person case was filed because of you this afternoon"
Missing person? That must have been Galina.
"Two different persons filed the case at different times" he continued and I stood fixated at a spot.
"I only know about one person, my best friend"
"Did you tell her to file the case?" He asked, throwing me off.
"No, I didn't. I only knew she did when I was able to call her today. I already told her to go back and rectify it"
He nodded and walked into the bathroom, not giving me a response or a second look.
I sat back on the couch and waited for him to get back so we could continue the conversation even if he didn't want to.
Minutes later, he stepped out of the bathroom, half-naked and I quickly looked away, trying not to look at him twice. He settled on the bed and pulled the covers over him, his hand on his face, obstructing the light.
"Do you need me to switch off the light?" I asked, walking over to the switch.
"Why did you try to kill yourself, Annika?" He asked.
My feet remained rooted at a spot and I couldn't move.
"Annika, I asked you something"
"I don't know," I replied as memories came rushing back to my brain.
Images that I wanted to delete, voices that I needed to drown came dancing in my head, and my vision.
"A missing case was announced on TV this afternoon and a lot of people saw you here this morning, so before a bunch of stupid police officers comes running through my door to arrest me for kidnapping and probably rape and every other unthinkable crime, I think I deserve to know what happened before I decide if I should let you return home or take you to the police station myself"
He yelled and I shivered at the intensity of his anger.
His fangs were out and his eyes were red. I couldn't take my eyes off him. I just couldn't.
"I'm sorry," I apologized as tears ran down my face.
"I don't want your apol…. Why the heck are you crying?"
Before I could blink, he was in front of me already. His hand was holding my face. He kissed my forehead, kissed my cheek, and hesitated at my lips.
"It's okay if you don't want to talk about it now. I understand it might be hard for you to do but promise me you'll tell me someday"
"I promise, Andro. Please don't get mad at me like that again. I don't know why but my heart stopped beating at that moment and it felt so heavy and I felt suffocated" I explained through tears.
"I'm sorry I did that to you. I'm so sorry, malyshl. I should have known that would happen. It's the soulmate bond" he kissed my hair and hugged me tightly to his body.
"The what?" I asked.
"Don't worry about it, Lyubov. What do you want to do? Tell me"
"I want to go back home"
He was silent and I was expecting him to refuse my demand as usual.
"Just for two days, Annika. You'll return for just two days"
I pulled my hands around him and hugged him tightly.
"Thank you,"
