Will we still be the same?
ONE WEEK LATER
THE FIRST TRIAL
ANDREW'S POINT OF VIEW
I was already prepared for the trial and I could not be in contact with Sarah for this whole time after that day when she made me dinner. I was hoping that she would come to the court to support me. I was confident in winning but I wanted her to wish me luck also so I was waiting. There were lots of people outside of court in the prosecuting team's support. They were chanting some phrases in support of prosecution team. There were people from media too. My colleague who is also in the same case with me asked, "Do you know who will be in the defending side?" I shook my head and said, "No, why?" He said, "The attorney who will be defending is still not exposed. Maybe no one is going to defend." I was shocked hearing that but I said, "No, I guess there will be someone to defend. There are lots of lawyers who can be bought by his filthy money."
We went inside the court room. Everyone was already there but the attorney was not present. The court room was noisy until the judge came. The judge after sitting looked at the attorney's position and said to the culprit, "Do you not have an attorney?" He said, "I have one. Let us wait. My attorney will soon be here." We all waited for five minutes and the door opened. Everyone looked back and.... and Sarah entered dressed in her attorney's uniform.
A word came from my mouth, "Sarah..." I was shocked to see her. She would never take the case, I knew that but why is she here. I was hoping for her to wish me luck but now she is in the opponent's side. She walked forward and apologized for being late and sat next to Johnny Patrick (Janol Patrick's son). We exchanged looks.
The trial started and it ended very soon with lots of debate. Sarah won the first trial. I felt betrayed because I had already discussed everything about the case with her before and she found many topics and dodged my every points. Everyone left the court room and when she was going to leave I grabbed her hand and asked, "What are you doing here? Why are you defending this case?" She did not look at me and said, "Why can I not be here?" I asked, "You know that he is the culprit then why are you defending him? You never took a false side then why this case?" She replied, "I don't care whether he is the culprit or not, I just know that he my client and I am getting paid really much. Who will not say yes after so much money is offered? And until the trial is not over he is not the culprit but just a suspect."
I could not believe her words and I said, "I know you well. It is not like you. You never take case for money. You never take the case in which you know that the one you will be defending is in false side, then why?" She looked at me and said, "Why can I not change? I can do whatever I want. It's my wish to take whatever case I want. And after this case I will not have to even work maybe because the payment is enough to feed my other two generations." I could not believe her but I asked, "Then, did you agree to this case before that day when you came for dinner?" She said, "Yes, and thanks to you I won today because I knew your every point."
"What?" I was shocked enough. She then said, "I am busy, I am leaving if you don't have much to say anymore now." She left. I shouted, "Sarah!!!!"
OUTSIDE THE COURT
After Sarah stepped out from court room, lots of reporters swarmed up....
Reporter 1: Attorney Watson, why have you taken this case? Did Mr. Patrick give you lots of money for it?
Reporter 2: Please tell us what is the reason for you to take the case?
Reporter 3: Do you think that Mr. Johnny is innocent?
Reporter 4: How much money are you taking from Mr. Patrick for this case? ......
Lots of reporters were asking different questions but Sarah said two words and moved forward, "No comments".
When she was finally out from the reporters group there were the people who were protesting against Johnny Patrick. One of them shouted, "That is the lawyer who is defending that b*tard." Many of them started cursing Sarah. They blocked her path and started saying things like,
"Being a woman how can you defend that monster who doesn't value a woman's dignity."
"You gold digger."
"You cannot be called as a person who works for the betterment of law." ... …
One of them threw an egg at her forehead. It was thrown with force, so it cut her forehead slightly. Some of them started throwing tomatoes and some eggs and even slippers. Sarah was moving back covering herself by her hands but behind her also reporters were coming. Just then a slipper flew and was going to land on her face, Andrew catched it and threw it down and covered her with his body and took her through those reporters inside. The reporters were clicking photographs and maybe some of them were also doing live streaming.
As they saw Andrew and Sarah together, they also started asking questions like,
"How will your relation be with your best friend now as he is your opponent?"
"Is he also on your side?"
"Are you both on this together?"
"Did he lose on purpose for you?"
...
Ignoring all the reporters, Andrew took her in and went out through another way and went back to their apartment by Andrew's car. Both of them were silent the whole way and after they came out from the car. Andrew grabbed her with both his hands on her shoulder and spoke, "Sarah, tell me why are you doing this? I know you are not doing this for money. Tell me the reason." Sarah looked at him and told, "How many times do I have to tell you that I am doing this for money? Why did you come to help me before? I could handle it by my own."
Andrew looked at her with sadness in his eyes and said, "Because I trust you." Sarah looked away and laughed and again looked at him and said, "So, why don't you trust me that I am doing this for money? How long will I be the lawyer who will only take good cases? I will soon go down if I keep on doing that. I need to earn my living." She freed Andrew's grip on her and said, "I guess it is better that we don't see each other until this case is finished. So, I will go to my parent's house to live."
She turned and Andrew said, "Do you think we will still be the same after this?" Sarah turned to look at him and said, "If you don't want our friendship to continue any more then I can do nothing about it." She went away. Andrew broke into tears. He just punched the wall that was near and his hand started bleeding.
Sarah was in the apartment, the doorbell rang. She was packing a few things and she left it and went to open the door. Louis was on the door. Louis asked as soon as the door opened and as he saw Sarah, "Are you fine?" He looked at Sarah's forehead and said, "I saw everything on the news." She said, "If you are also here to stop me to defend this case then you can leave right now. I am not going to stop." He said, "No, I will not stop you." She let him enter and closed the door behind him. They went to the lobby and sat and he said, "I will not stop you, but tell me the reason why you are doing this." She looked at him and said, "Because I want to take the case. This case is the most famous case nowadays." Louis looked at her and said, "Okay don't tell me the reason but you don't need to lie. I guess it's better if you leave this place for a while." Sarah didn't say anything and then they didn't talk much and Louis went. After Louis went, Sarah completed her packing and went to her parent's house by a cab.
