Chapter 17 Favorite Girl
"We should all be respectful but we must also have the courage to stop harmful practices that impoverish our girls, women and their communities" Grace Machel, Women and Children's right activist.
............
"What if we're just overreacting? I mean, Abdullahi might be the name of her brother for all we care" Lara said.
"She is the only child, Alhaji Balewa has. She has never mentioned a thing about siblings." Tomison said.
"Pretty much explains why she's heartless" I said as we all took our outfits to the lady at the counter. I settled for the yellow dress, Lara also went with the purple dress that did wonders to her figure and we finally found a blue gown that made Tomison look like a princess.
"That will be 99,600" the lady at the counter said, smiling in a way that made me want to hurt her.
'99,600 Just tell us it's 100,000. Thief!' I thought.
"Isn't it too expensive? I whispered to Lara as she was about to stretch her dad's credit card to the lady."
"It's fine. Trust me I've got a dress that's more expensive than all these dresses put together. So...."
'Omo Baba OLOWO' I thought and shrugged.
As soon as we got out of the boutique and the air conditioned vibe got replaced with the scorching Lagos sun, we resumed our topic.
"But, Remi. I still think that password might be harmless." Tomison said.
"Then there's no harm if we check who Abdullahi Is. Let me just feed my curiosity."
"What do you plan on becoming when you leave school?" Lara asked.
"A lawyer. Why?"
"Lawyer? Girl! You're heading for the wrong career. I suggest you try joining the Nigerian police or just startup a private detective firm or something." Tomison joked.
"Or the CIA" Lara added.
"Funny, very funny. I just like helping people out that's all." I said in my defense.
"Yeah, yeah" Tomison sang.
"So, Lara? Are you helping me?"
"With what?"
"The Abdullahi search."
"Oh that. Of course. I'll get to it as soon as I get home."
I turned to Tomison and gave her a knowing look.
"What?" She asked in confusion.
"You know what." I said.
"Actually, I don't"
"We need your help"
"With?"
"Forget it"
"I'm just kidding jare. Someone cannot play with you? I'll see what I can find out from Emem and Tobi. I'm sure they'll know him. But I still think it's a total waste of time."
"People say that a lot in crime movies, but it always turns out to be something" I said.
"Wow so she's also a fan of crime movies. Now we know why she's like this" Lara said to Tomison and we all laughed as we boarded another tricycle back to Lara and Tomison's street.
We decided to go for wig shopping on Friday.
"I still think we should order it online" Tomison said.
"I'm not a fan of online shopping." Lara said.
"Me too, talking about online shopping, did I tell you guys what happened yesterday?" I asked.
They shook their heads.
"This hot guy from Konga Came to deliver something my brother ordered and he kept...............then he said................and finally, he told me he was going to keep coming to my house with free things till I give him my number"
"Awwwn that's so cute!" Tomison cooed.
"So you really think he'll come today?" Lara asked.
"I pray he doesn't, but I'm also open to free gift o" I smiled.
"Who isn't open?" Tomison asked and bumped me with her shoulders playfully.
"Just be careful, he might be a serial killer." Lara warned with sincerity in her tone.
"Now look whos being CIA?" I teased.
"So how far with you and March?" Lara asked.
"You mean your date?" I teased again.
"Which stupid date? He'll definitely cancel on me two hour before the party."
Where was this Girl's self esteem?
"I don't think so, especially when he sees you in that dress. He'll be drooling all over you." I said.
"DON'T deceive her, Remi. We all know he's going to be watching you throughout." Tomison said.
"I know right?" Lara said to Tomison.
"You guys, stop. I'm sure he's not into me like that." I felt my cheek grow hot. "He just want to be friends."
"We'll be the judge of that. You need to see the way he looks at you."
"Like a FRIEND would look at another friend" I answered.
"You don't look at us that way" Lara teased and this time I busted into a crazy fit of laughter.
"You Girls are crazy" I shook my head.
We decided to spend an hour at the restaurant and we spent it discussing about the party, the murder, the password and boys. Apparently, Lara had a crush on some boy in my class, Donald. She says he's gorgeous and perfectly handsome but I can barely remember his face, although I told her I thought he was also handsome, ignoring the unbelievable look on Tomison's face.
According to Tomi, she was done with boys. She wasn't shy to say she was beginning to test lesbianism and that she already had her eyes on a junior girl in our school.
We had soft drinks and snacks, which I paid for. And we all decided to call it a day. By the time I got home, it was 5 thirty and no one was home. I too the key from the usual place we kept it and walked lazily into the house. I threw the dress on the bed and had a quick shower. After changing into something comfortable I lazily walked to the kitchen and groaned at the sight of the mess Rotimi had made. It took me thirty minutes to clean it up I was in the middle of it when I heard my phone ring. I stopped what I was doing and dashed to my room because I didn't have airtime to call back, especially if it was an important call. Thankfully the phone began to ring again and as when I checked the caller id, it said, Unknown. But I accepted the call anyway.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Hey" the unfamiliar female voice said.
"Sorry, I don't know who this is"
"Actually, I think you know me well, and would you drop the fake British accent, it's pathetic"
"The only thing that's pathetic here is your manners. Who am I speaking to?"
"Your Favorite Girl."
"I'm going to have to end this joke bye—"
"It's me Aisha, come out of your house, I need your help"
