Chapter 21 Stubborn Girl
"When someone tells you that you can't, turn around and say 'watch me' – Anonymous
.......
"So you're going today?" Lara asked.
"Yeah, after school" I answered. It was short break and although we had limited time, I needed to tell them about it.
"We can come, too" Tomison said.
"The principal said it's strictly for class captains"
"I was his girl.....girlf....girlfriend for a while. His father kind of liked me. I think it's only proper that I pay my last respect. I'll come with Lara after school; we'll come on our own."
"Uh..........i don't think I want to go" Lara stated
"Why?" Tomison asked.
"Apart from the fact that I don't like him and that it will just be freaking awkward?" Lara asked.
"Look on the brighter side, we might discover something about his death" I said
"She's right" Tomison added.
"I don't know what we can possibly discover from his bereaved family, but I'll go if it makes you both happy" Lara said, rolling her eye.
"I've got to leave now that it's settled. I have work to do" Tomison said and went off.
"I also need to check something at the IT room before the bell rings" Lara said and gave me a small hug before running off. So as I walked from the library to the class I felt someone call my name from behind. I turned back and saw March running after me.
"Hey," he said panting heavily. "I've been looking for you"
"Now you've found me" I said sarcastically and began to walk away.
"Remi, please stop. We need to talk"
"NO, March. There's nothing to talk about"
"I need to apologize; I.....shouldn't have...."
"Jumped into conclusion?"
He nodded.
"Well, apology accepted. But why exactly were you offended? You just came into our school. Fine we saw each other during the weekend and as circumstances would have it, we kissed. That's not enough reason to think you can automatically become my boyfriend. And didn't I tell you that I had a boyfriend?"
"Yeah, that's true, you actually did. I'm sorry, I forgot. I just......liked you. I guess"
"March, you don't even know me!"
"I know, I know. And another thing I know is that you're single."
"You don't give up do you?"
"Not when I see what I like. So, will you still accompany me to the Cinderella stuff? Cos everyone is talking about it"
As long as it would hurt Aisha to see me go with him.
"Yes, I'll accompany you, and we'll go as friends remember your actual date Is my friend"
"No Problem"
And that was it, all Aisha's conniving plan, done! Everything was back to normal in less than a day. Maybe not totally normal, but you sure catch my drift right?"
Aisha decided to join the bus last minute. I mean, I know she did it only to prove a point, probably piss me off.
I was enjoying the view of the street through the window of the moving vehicle when I felt someone sit beside me. Aisha.
"What...do you want?" I asked in contempt. Her whole presence was disgusting to me.
"To talk to you"
"I don't want to talk to you now get the hell out of here"
"What? Out of the bus?"
'If possible you can take a one way ticket to hell' I thought and looked away from her back to the window. Watching children walking home from school was way better than acknowledging her existence.
"So, you're just going to ignore me?" she asked in a mock tone.
"When you're tired you'll leave" I murmured to myself.
"I just want you to know that I'm sorry."
I wasn't about to fall for her lies again. I did that twice already. We finally got into the Ekene mansion, and I must say, it was a huge building. Like the type you see in a motion picture movie. We had to go through endless security process before we got into the main gate, I'm telling you It felt like we were on an excursion at a federal museum or something. When we finally got to the main gate, the principal made a phone call and the gate was finally buzzed open. If I thought Aisha's home was a palace, then Jax's home was a kingdom. It had numerous water fountains and a hotel size pool. As we walked or (may I say) toured into the kingdom, I noticed that every staff in the house black.
As expected, the main building had numerous sitting rooms but the one we were ushered in was bigger than my church and its Sunday school building put together. An old looking woman adorned in black asked if we wanted anything and all of us but Aisha said no. Aisha wanted water. After what seemed like eternity, A perfectly trim woman walked gracefully down the stairs. You could tell from her face that she was Jax's mom. It felt like she was taking forever walking down the stairs but when she came down, every feeling of irritation in me melted when I saw the sadness in her face. Her face brightened at the sight of Aisha and it made me feel some kind of way.
"Aisha! What a Surprise! It's been a while. How's your dad?"
"He's very well, ma. Accept my condolences. I'm very sorry." She said, with a fake show of emotion.
"It's okay, honey. We'll be alright"
"It's like we don't exist." A girl whispered beside me. I smiled in return. She was right but I hated to admit it. But the fact still remained that we weren't here for her, we were here for Jax.
We were all seated and the principal was saying something awkward about death when suddenly heard a door open and a familiar face appeared from the stairs. At first I thought my heart had stopped beating, but it began pumping blood to my head and I quickly blinked. He was standing like a male model with his Konga Uniform.
He stood for a minute looking at me. He was probably as shocked as I was. He finally regained consciousness and walked down the stairs towards us.
"HEY, Obi my man!" the principal greeted.
Obinna greeted back.
"These are the representatives of our school."
"Good afternoon sir" everyone greeted but me and Aisha. It felt weird calling him, 'sir'"
He started shaking hands with the students' one after the other and I couldn't help but feel like it was the same as I did on Monday, except now I was in March's shoes. He stopped when he got to me and whispered, "We meet again, stubborn girl". I wanted t ask him a lot of questions, but I decided to save it for later.
