Chapter 199
Lily had been trying to convince Grandfather that Nikita was a terrible person —even though he was ignoring her— when a call came in through Mr Lawson senior's phone. He raised a finger and shut Lily up.
"Yes, Calhoun?" He responded. He was both relieved and stressed that Calhoun had called. Relieved because he was tired of listening to Lily complaint about everybody now and secondly he was stressed out the more because he knew Calhoun was probably calling to give him news that would increase his blood pressure. The boy enjoyed doing that to him.
"Grandfather, how have you been?" Calhoun started.
"I am better now that you have decided to take responsibility and call me!" He said harshly. He loved Calhoun too much and the fact that Calhoun kept disobeying him made him angry because he knew he could never really come through on any of his threats.
"Grandfather, can we not go to that topic? I called for something else!" Calhoun stated on his end. He was as stubborn as his grandfather. He was strong-willed and determined to do as his heart wished and no other way could pass.
"I presumed you would have said that... I don't want to argue anymore Calhoun. I have grown too old for that. Why did you call?"
"I have made preparations for my wedding and the date has been fixed. Ariana and I will be coming to the house to give the family the invitation."
Mr Lawson senior felt like a part of his heart was collapsing. He loved planning and organising events. He had done countless planning for his friend's children and grandchildren. He wanted to do the same for all his grandchildren, especially Calhoun. Now he had gone to print an Invitation without involving him?
"Calhoun, am I going to be a simple guest at your wedding?"
He tried hard to hide his pain but Calhoun heard it. He knew his grandfather and he hated making him feel that way.
"That's why we want to come and talk to you. Grandfather, there is still a lot to be done. I am a very busy man and you know it. Ariana can't possibly plan it all on her own. Her friend is helping out but aside from that she basically has no one else. I am the one with a large family. Most of the planning will be done from your end," Calhoun said just to make him feel better.
He could higher hundreds of event planners just to make everything go right for Ariana but he loved his grandfather too. He would let him do some of the planning as long as he didn't make Ariana feel uncomfortable.
Grandfather was quiet for a long time. Calhoun would have thought he had ended the call if not for his breathing that could be heard on his end.
Lily Lawson was still in the study. She didn't even have the courtesy or shame to excuse herself. The fact that she had realised it was Calhoun on the phone was even more reason why she planted herself in the old man's study and refused to leave. She wanted every detail from the horse's mouth and her heart raced as she heard Calhoun was getting married. The stupid girl she had brought had done nothing!
Rather than face what she had brought her for which was to create problems for Ariana and Calhoun, the stupid girl had gone on and focused on Matt instead!
"Fine, you can come during the weekend. We will have lunch and discuss it," Grandfather said in a low tone. He had realised he could lose his grandson if he kept pressuring him about this Ariana girl. Looking at the girl, she wasn't a bad girl. She was smart, comported herself well enough and she always had a smile on even when Lily said lies about her. Ariana kept her head high.
If not for the parents she had and her background, she would have been a hundred per cent. But now that she must marry his grandson, he had no choice but to accept her.
"Okay, we will be there. Bye for now," Calhoun said before ending the call.
Mr Lawson senior dropped his phone and relaxed into the seat. Lily couldn't wait to hear out what he thought about Ariana. Surely he wouldn't approve of such a union. Or so she thought?
"Lily, why are you still here?" Grandfather asked sternly. "Weren't you taught to respect other people's privacy?" He asked her as he rose from his seat.
Lily made to talk but he stopped her at once as he got up from the chair; "I need to get to the office. I have some things to settle. Excuse me," the grandfather said getting away from her. He had seen the sort of game she was playing.
Lily was a bitter woman. Other's happiness was like hell for her. She simply couldn't stand seeing others happy.
"Grandfather, why don't you send Noah or Benson to do it? Or me even," She said with a toothy smile.
They had gotten to the corridor by now. Grandfather stopped moving and turned to glare at her. "They have never shown interest in the job before. Why should I take them?"
Lily scratched her head and then put on her smile again. "People are bound to change and you look stressed out. Why don't you—" she hadn't finished her sentence when Matt cut her off.
"Grandfather look stressed because you don't let him get fresh air! Gosh! Don't you get tired of talking too much?" He spat angrily. He was also stepping out of the house for a while when he saw his mother trailing after his grandfather
"Oh Matt please, save me from your mother. I could pass out!" Grandfather said in relief.
Matt nodded and the old man tapped his shoulder before walking to the exit.
"You! What was that about?" Lily hissed as soon as Mr Lawson senior had left the space they were standing in.
