Chapter 75
Alice was pacing up and down her office with her fingers in her teeth. She had dropped a lot of messages with Calhoun's secretary but she hadn't gotten a reply yet. Was the fool not doing her job?
She needed to talk to Calhoun it was very urgent. She would have called his private line but he had blatantly refused to give her his number no matter how hard she tried.
"Alice you need to calm down. I am sure the secretary will reply. Don't increase your blood pressure by running around like this?" Sofia said from the corner of the office.
She had been sulking about Ethan but since her sister also had problems of her own she had settled in a corner and had her legs propped on the table as she went through her phone.
"You know, when I marry Calhoun eventually, I am going to make sure, he sacks that annoying secretary of his! The silly woman never passes my messages I swear it!" Alice spat.
Sofia rolled her eyes and focused on her phone, leaving her sister to rant about her problems on her own.
Alice's phone rang and she quickly picked it up as she saw the annoying secretary's number.
"Sarah! Why are you just calling me now, do you know how many times a tried to reach out to your boss? Why didn't you call me earlier?" Alice yelled on the phone.
"I am sorry ma'am but Mr. Lawson has been busy all day. He asked me to redirect your calls to one of our managers at the moment, would you like me to transfer the call now?"
Alice thought her heart would tear open at what the secretary was saying!
"He wants me to talk to who?" She asked slowly.
Sofia took her eyes off her phone and watched her sister with concern. She was starting to sound like she would explode.
"One of our most efficient managers ma'am," Sarah repeated.
Alice could swear the scrawny secretary was mocking her. There was no way Calhoun could have said that.
"He wants me to speak to a manager? Does he even know-" she stopped herself from ranting at the annoying woman and tried to calm herself. "Listen, tell him what I want to say is personal. Thank you." Alice ended the call and dropped into a chair close to her.
"Argh!" She screamed in frustration.
Sofia left her corner and came to her sister. "What's wrong? What did the secretary say?"
Alice held her head in her arms and turned her eyes to her younger sister. "Can you believe she told me that Calhoun asked her to transfer my calls to a manager? An ordinary manager when we are supposed to be making arrangements for our wedding!"
Sofia placed her fingers on her sister's shoulders and slowly started to massage her. "You'll be just fine, Alice. Why not talk to daddy. He could put a word through to his grandfather. I heard Calhoun Lawson listens to only his old man," Sofia said as she worked for her hands on her sister's stressed muscles.
"I think that's what I will do. I can't lose that man Sofia! He is everything I want in a man. He has the money, the looks, and the power! With him by my side, I will be an unstoppable force in this city!" Alice said dreamily. "If only he will give us a chance..."
"Don't worry about it, I am certain, father will do something."
Alice Brentwood had met Calhoun in one of her business seminars outside the country and ever since then she had been aiming for him. She spoke to her father about it and he thought it would be good for their family businesses if they got married. Luckily, he was friends with Calhoun's grandfather. All that was left was for Calhoun and her to get to know each other and take it to the next step. But all her effort to be with Calhoun was proving hard. He was avoiding her, by all means, necessary like she was a plague.
Alice unlocked her phone and dialed her father's number. It rang twice before his voice filled the phone.
"Alice my dear, how are you?" Mr. Brentwood said cheerfully on the phone.
"Daddy, I am not fine..." Alice whined. "I have been trying to draw closer to Calhoun just like we discussed but he is avoiding me, daddy. Can't you talk to his grandfather?"
"Of course. I will talk to his grandfather and you don't worry. Calhoun will be yours in no time," he assured her.
Sofia felt a little prick in her heart. She wished her father was also friends with Ethan's uncle or something. That way she could have gotten him as well. But Ethan was as stubborn as a goat facing a bridge. He would not listen to anyone. She was all alone in her fight for love, unlike her sister
"Thank you so much, daddy," Alice said.
"Anything for my princess. How is your sister doing?" He asked.
"Sofia is just fine," Alice replied and Sofia smiled.
"Okay, send her my kisses. I have to go now. Talk to you later," he said and ended the call.
Alice ended the call and dumped the phone on the table. Now all she had to do was hope and pray that her father convinced his grandfather to make him become flexible with her. Now she really understood her Sofia felt when Ethan refused to give her attention. Even if in her case, Calhoun wasn't with another woman, he simply didn't want to be with her.
"You'll be just fine, Alice," Sofia whispered as she continued to massage her shoulders. "You are the strongest woman I know. I am certain you will find a way around this," Sofia said and Alice smiled.
She was truly a strong woman. The face of the Brentwood, she got contracts worth billions of dollars against hundreds of competitors, in the same way, she would also get Calhoun. She just had to play her cards right.
The first thing the next day, she would go to his office herself. He would have no choice but to see her and talk to her.
