Chapter 29

POV Aiden

Thomas found the girls easily and sent them home.

It was no secret that there was no love lost between Omega Gavin and I, but I did not wish him dead. The permanent loss of the ability to speak would have done just fine.

I arrived thirty minutes or so after Thomas. Omega Gavin’s body had been visibly dragged from the spot the girls saw him by the tree earlier back into the creek. Whoever moved him did not bother to cover that fact.

Rolling him on his back his heart had been ripping from his chest. From the lack of blood on the trail he was knocked out first and moved here before he was killed.

Thomas crouched over the body. “We sure he’s dead. He was a heartless bastered before so I don’t think this should stop him.”

“Show some respect.” I snapped at him.

Thomas looked back at me with a stagnant expression. Omega Gavin would be missed by very few, but he was still a member of this pack.

“Wrap him up and get his remains to the morgue. I’ll go let his mate know.” I told him.

“I’m sure she knows, mate bond and all.” He said.

“I wouldn’t be so sure about that. Neither the Luna or I felt anything. I was shocked when Thea told me. I’m sure he would have pledged to the pack, but it would have been before my time. I guess I never questioned it.” I said.

Pausing to observe the strange way his body was placed. It looked to have been left to make sure his blood drained down the stream. I felt no sorrow that he was gone but i did feel bad for his mate Paula.

Paula is a sweet, very shy woman. I’m not sure she’s spoke more than ten sentences to me the entire time I’ve been alpha.

As I pulled up to Omega Gavin and Paula’s place a commotion could be heard inside over the car engine. I put the car in park and gathered my thoughts before shutting it off.

“How do you give your condolences for someone you didn’t even like?” I pondered.

“Paula deserves our comfort. She didn’t choose her mate. I can’t imagine being mated to Gavin for all these years was easy.” Juxes replied.

I knocked on the door but doubted it could be heard over noise coming from inside. It sounded like a bar brawl, furniture smashing and glass breaking. I could hear two distinct voices arguing but couldn’t quite make them out.

The loss of a mate would be deviating, feeling their fear and pain in their final moments torture. When Darien died, I felt little of his pain before he was gone. Juxes howled at the loss of a pack member. I could never wish that feeling in another. The emptiness after he passed will never be filled.

Pulled from my own thoughts by Paula’s voice from inside. “Where am I.” She sobbed.

The voice that answered her deep and cruel. “It’s no concern of yours. Now release this hold woman and give me back your meat suit.” It grumbled.

“Where is my family you monster.” She screamed back at the voice. Again, the sound of glass breaking.

We burst through the door, Juxes at the edge ready to shift. Where we had expected to see Paula fighting with someone, we only found Paula.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

Paula looked at me with tear filled eyes. “Now who are you?” She asked in a shaky voice.

“It’s me, Alpha Aiden. Don’t you recognize me?”

Her mouth opened but the deep growling voice came out instead of hers. “Shut up you bitch.” Hair sprouting from her arms before withdrawing.

“Is she fighting her wolf?” Juxes asked me.

I opened the connection feeling for Elijah. “I need you to bring that sedative you used on Thea to Paula’s house. Now!” I didn’t even wait for a response before cutting the connection.

Her eyes searched mine for answers. “Where is my family?” She burst into tears.

“Give me back your body.” The voice growled again.

“No!” Paula screamed.

“I’m sorry Paula, we found Gavin’s body by the creek this afternoon.” I told her.

The confusion in her face growing deeper.

I heard Elijah pull up and the door shut. He crept around one of the windows making eye contact with me. I signaled for him to come around the back.

Elijah busted down the back door, Paula’s attention quickly turning in his direction, but she had no time to react. He fired the dart straight into her chest.

Paula’s canines received, her bones snapping back into place as her claws drew back. She drew in a deep breath before falling into one of the chairs. “Who’s Gavin?” She asked.

Elijah and I exchanged glances. It is not uncommon for a wolf to go crazy after losing their mate. The grief unbearable but I didn’t understand what was going on here. From the looks of it neither did Elijah.

“Your husband and mate, Omega Gavin.” I said. Trying to use a soothing voice.

“My mates name is David.” She said before the drugs knocked her out.
