Chapter 30

POV Aiden

We transferred Paula to the clinic I had called in Miss Evens for any ideas on what could be happening to her. She arrived within the hour as expected carrying at least a dozen books.

Elijah, Miss Evens and I all sat around the table in the break room.

“Start at the beginning.” Miss Evens said pulling out a pen and a notebook.

“Thea and Amira went swimming at the pond at the end of the creek. They noticed the blood in the water and followed it to find Gavin’s body. When Thea contacted me saying he was dead I didn’t believe her at first. Neither the Luna or I felt anything from him out of the ordinary. Not that I make an effort to feel for him.” I said rolling my eyes.

Miss Evens jotted down her notes before chewing on her pen. “You said you think Gavin was moved to the creek before he was killed?” She asked.

“I couldn’t be sure but there was no blood trail. Distinct drag marks ran from the tree to the creek but there were no signs of blood. Splatter on the bank leads me to believe that’s where he was killed.” I told her.

“Do you think someone wanted the girls to find him?” She asked.

The thought hadn’t even occurred to me. If the girls saw him leave and he came back while they were swimming, he was definitely killed when they were already at the pond.

“I hadn’t thought of that.” I told her honestly. “We found the spray paint that was used on Jason’s car yesterday in the tree where Gavin hid the backpack. Either he’s the one who’s been harassing Thea, or someone is trying to make it look like he was. I don’t have any idea what he would have against her though.”

“It could be something or it could be nothing but if he was placed upstream and intentionally left to bleed out where the girls were sure to find him. We can’t rule out the possibility that whoever they were might have been trying to scare them. Maybe Gavin did do it or maybe it’s someone else and they are upping the ante.”

I reached out to Thomas. “Find Thea and Amira, keep a close eye on them.” I told him.

“You think they are in danger Alpha?” He asked.

“Just want to be cautious.” I told him before cutting the connection.

“What happened when you went to Paula’s?” Miss Evens asked.

“I heard what sounded like a fight before I turned off the car. When we could hear a voice threatening Paula, Juxes and I pushed through the door.” I told her.

“Paula was scared and said she didn’t know where she was or who I was. Her wolf was angry and trying to force control. She called Paula her meat suit.” I recounted.

“How peculiar.” Miss Evens hummed.

“The weirdest part is when I told her Gavin was dead, she didn’t know who he was. She said her mates name is David.”

“I’ve heard of one side or the other having a psychological break after losing their mate but a complete disassociation from each other is new to me.” Miss Evens said looking over her notes.

Turning her attention to Dr. Stevenson. “Is it possible to speak to just Paula, can you sedate just her wolf like we did Selova?” She asked.

“We can try, I’ll have to slowly back the sedative off until Paula is conscious. She will still be pretty out of it though.” He said.

“I would be very interested in speaking with her alone. It may provide us with some answers. She may have broken down over Gavin’s death and her wolf is trying to push forward to protect her.” Miss Evens told him.

“I’ll get started right away.” Dr. Stevenson replied. “If you don’t need me for anything else I can go lower the dosage now.”

Miss Evens and I both nodded and he stood up and left the room.

Miss Evens brought out a large leather-bound book. Holding records for new pledges to the pack, releases and exiles. I was interested in what she found about Gavin and Paula.

Thumbing through the pages I watched as the years went backwards. She stopped somewhere in the 1970’s. “Gavin was gone for at least a year but when he returned, he was happy to announce that he had found his mate Paula. She pledged to the pack not long after. When you said you and the Luna didn’t feel his tether to the pack break, I did some digging. There is no place in our records that shows Gavin pledging to the Lunas father Alpha Tobias or Alpha Marcus.” She said turning the book towards me as if I cared to look through a hundred years of names.

“I’ll take your word for it.” I told her. “Then how did he get here?” I wondered.

“I was thinking about that too. I remember when Alpha Tobias struck up the deal for the Luna, their pack sent several warriors and a few others over as a sign of good faith payment. I wonder if he snuck in with them.” She said. “There were fifty or more men coming in and out, none of them pledged to the pack. In all the chaos of you taking over it wouldn’t have been too hard to pretend he had been here all along.”

“He held a spot on the council for fucks sake.” I was discussed that he had been leaching off our pack and pretending to be an elder member without having pledged to us.

“He held an elder spot; it would have never been a question of his loyalty only his age to receive that spot.” She told me.

Elijah poked his head in the door. “She’s waking up if you want to try and talk to her.”
