Murilo
After opening the door of her house, Virginia entered, indicating then the interior of the residence with visible reluctance, something that I did not mind at all, and whether she liked it or not, now I am part of her life and would fight hard for my space.
I looked around the room, carefully observing the inside of the house, which, despite being small, seemed to be very cozy, and I noticed that although it is a simple environment, it is very comfortable and organized, which indicated that everything is well taken care of by its residents.
" Mom! " Virginia called out, walking to the beginning of a corridor "Mom!”
She didn't invite me to sit down or anything else that good manners dictate, but I did anyway and waited, while Virginia continued down the hallway, having received no response to her calls.
I continued looking around carefully and noticed an envelope next to the sofa on a side table and saw that Virginia's name was written in pen on the yellow paper, indicating that she was the recipient of the message.
"My parents aren't home, which is quite strange because Mom didn't say anything about going out with Dad today.”
" There's an envelope for you here " I gestured to where the message was.
She hurried to get the envelope, opened it looking very anxious, and after opening the envelope and pulling out a piece of ruled paper, she was soon reading the first words of what was written. Only a few seconds later, I noticed that her eyes were filled with what must have been unshed tears, and I decided to intervene.
" Did something serious happen? " I asked with concern, getting up from the sofa and walking over to where she was standing.
She didn't answer, she just crumpled the paper in her hand, threw it on the floor, and, to my utter consternation, burst into tears immediately afterward.
" What happened, Virginia? Tell me! " I asked once more.
As she couldn't stop crying and was even trembling, I feared she would have another pressure drop, which would make it necessary to go back to the hospital, so I hugged her tightly. With her in my arms, I understood that the best thing was to wait for the moment when she could stop crying, and I kept trying to comfort her, even though I had no idea what had happened.
" Don't be like that, my love " I said, trying to calm her and stroking her back gently. "Whatever is written on that paper, I will help you. I'll always be by your side, Virginia.”
She didn't answer, and it was only after a few minutes, her crying began to stop, leaving only a few copious sobs.
" I can't believe it, Murilo " she kept repeating, incomprehensibly "They couldn't have done this to me!”
" Before anything else, you must calm down, Virginia," I said, pulling away a little and staring at her so that she would pay close attention to my words "Staying in this state won't do you any good.”
Virginia didn't seem to like my words, for she looked at me with irritation, disengaging herself from my arms and taking a few steps away from me.
" While I am going through the worst time of my life, you are only worried about your son!" she said angrily, her finger pointing at me "You... you... idiot!”
She seemed to search for the word to use against me, and I was relieved that she didn't go so far in her choice to offend me, as I wasn't sure I would receive her outburst as calmly as I was still feeling.
" I am worried about our son, yes, and I won't deny that " I confessed "But I'm also worried about you, Virginia. And I'm not trying to please you by saying this. I'm telling you the absolute truth.”
She walked over to the sofa and sat down, trembling, and noticeably nervous, and I understood that this was not the appropriate moment to confront the mother of my son. I let out a sigh of resignation, trying very hard to maintain control, which I confess was hanging by a thread.
The fact was that Virginia was fighting me at all times, and it was becoming very difficult to be patient and simply wait for her to understand that for everything she needed, I was by her side and not against her.
" What happened? " I asked again, in a delicate tone.
I knew that women when they were pregnant were more sensitive and that things tended to take on a much greater proportion when you were in this state.
" My parents abandoned me. That's what happened! " she said, already losing control again.
" How old are you, Virginia? " I asked.
" I'll be twenty"two on Sunday " she answered with visible reluctance, making a gesture of disregard "I know what you mean, you don't have to throw that in my face.”
" So, if you know that you are old enough to live on your own, explain the situation to me, " I asked, sitting down next to her "You have my full support, but I need to know what's going on.”
I wanted her to talk to me because only then could I try to understand the reason for all her despair because that was exactly the word to describe the feeling Virginia seemed to be feeling since she read the letter. From what I was able to understand, it was her parents who had left the letter for her.
Only then did Virginia tell me that when she found out that she was pregnant, she immediately told her parents and that her mother supported her, but her father was not at all pleased to hear that his daughter was pregnant, without being married, or at least dating.
" He had been ignoring you since you told him about the pregnancy? " I asked, in astonishment.
" I pretended that everything was fine, as it always was, but he was doing that, ignoring me, " she said, looking embarrassed by the situation.
"And your mother, what did she say?”
" My mother and I were hoping that soon he would change his behavior and forget about this anger " It was quite visible that she was sad about the situation, and it made me angry at your father.
" And today you have this surprise " I pointed out the obvious "Didn't you suspect that this might happen?”
"It never crossed my mind that my parents could just leave, live in the country, just to get away from me.”
" You have your job, and you have your home, Virginia " I tried to cheer her up. "You have Mariana, who seems to be a real friend and I believe you can count on her, for every moment.”
"I don't work in that store, Murilo. It's mine and Mariana's, we are partners.”
"This is even better. You have your own business, Virginia. You are an entrepreneur.”
I was happy to know that she had invested in something solid and that, from what I could see in my quick visit to the store, it was something that had a lot of potential.
" About the store, yes, " she agreed. "But about the house, you are also wrong. It is not my house, but my parents. They will sell it, so they can buy one in Atibaia.”
"You said they are with your aunt. I thought then…”
"My mother said that she tried to make my father change his mind about this because they could just live with Aunt Carmen since she lives alone and has no children. But my father said that the house is his and that I don't deserve to take the fruit of years of his hard work.”
She cried again, probably because of the harshness of such words coming from the most important people in her life, and I hugged her again, after all, at that moment all she needed was support.
And when she could calm down, it would be necessary to talk about other subjects, such as important decisions because the time had come when she would need to accept what I had to offer.
