Surpassing Yourself
Virgínia
I was embarrassed by her words, for I only wanted to help my best friend.
" Don't be like that, Vi " She held my hand across the table, as a form of support "But you need a good spanking, woman. I'm sure that seeing Murilo having sex in the nightclub with that snake Lavinia messed with your psychology because the Virginia I know is full of determination and when she wants something, she goes all the way, like the night of the auction.”
Mariana was right, but the insecurity seemed to have parked in me and didn't want to go away, and I couldn't get over it at all.
" I just want you to think about everything I've told you and react " Mariana jokes "Are you going to let this man get away? Show Murilo that you want to be with him and that he chose the right person to love. Because he loves you, Vi.”
"And you? Aren't you going to react too and look for the person who is messing with you, or better, with your heart?”
I believe that something happened to Mariana on the night of the auction, but she doesn't want to tell me, previously claiming that when she was ready she would tell me, and now she kept repeating that I had my own problems to worry about, now that I was pregnant.
" A person who became important to me found herself between two completely opposite paths and chose to follow the side of another person, Virginia " She explained cryptically.
Was this person the man who bought her at the auction, or had my best friend met someone special and didn't tell me about it? I was about to insist, to find out more and try to help in any way I could, but she would not allow me, once again.
"Murilo is completely different and since he saw you at the club, he has left everything aside to run after you, and that says a lot about him, believe me. Don't let that venomous snake shake your security.”
I laughed at Mariana's words at this point because that was the problem. I had been shaken by the fact that Murilo had options, and that even a famous, nationally known actress was someone who was on the same social level as him, while I was just a poor girl who auctioned off her own virginity.
So I ended up deciding not to get into that dispute over "who will get Murilo". Because it always came down to that, and I wasn't good at disputes or competitions.
But now I needed to keep in mind that there was no dispute when there was no prize because Murilo was already mine and was not available for anyone else. And it was with this determination that I got into the back seat of the luxurious and comfortable car and greeted the serious and composed driver.
" Virginia Oliveira? " he asked, to confirm my identity.
" Yes " I answered, trying to show a gentle smile " And you, sir, what is your name?
"I'm Jorge, ma'am.”
" It's a great pleasure to meet you, Jorge," I said, trying to be a nicer and nicer person, as I always have been.
" Thank you, ma'am " he smiled in return for my words. "What is the address where I can take you?”
I asked him to take me to FERZ's central office and in a short time the driver stopped the car in front of the sumptuous building of the famous cosmetics company of which Murilo was CEO.
Before getting out of the car, I dismissed the driver for the day, informing him that I would only need his services again on Monday, and wished him a good weekend.
It was only when I entered the lobby and arrived at the reception that I realized how difficult it would be to reach Murilo because even if I could convince them that there was some connection between the two of us, they would still contact the CEO secretary to confirm whether I was telling the truth.
Maybe it would have been better to contact Murilo directly and let him know that I was in the company building, but I wanted to surprise him so badly that I approached the receptionist's desk and asked to speak to him.
" What is your name? " The receptionist asked.
"Virginia Oliveira.”
The moment she heard my name she smiled cordially, looked at something on her computer screen, and then told me which way I should go. As I started to walk, I breathed a sigh of relief because none of the terrible scenarios I had imagined might happen when I introduced myself to the receptionist turned out to be true.
She didn't even give me a superior look at any time, and I thanked the heavens that I was wearing a presentable social outfit, even though it was bought in a department store when Mariana and I decided to buy clothes that matched our new reality as entrepreneurs.
The black tailored pants, combined with a blue long-sleeve blouse made of light fabric and with a discreet neckline in the front, which was highlighted by a bow made of the fabric itself, looked good on me and I felt even more secure when I entered the elegant elevator.
But when I arrived at the waiting room of Murilo's office, I thought that maybe now it was a little more complicated and that maybe he was even busy and couldn't receive me. But soon the secretary saw me and I needed to identify myself, asking to speak to his boss.
"Just a moment, and I will see if he can see you.”
She also did not question me as to why I wanted to speak to someone of such a high rank, but it took her a while to get back to me, and I was apprehensive about this.
" You may come in, madam. Mr. Fernandes is waiting for you " She told me with a beautiful smile, which I promptly reciprocated.
She opened the door again, leaving it ajar and indicating that I should come in, and as I passed through the doorway, the efficient secretary closed it again, leaving me facing a smiling Murilo.
