Chapter 22
Inside, Ava pushed Alex so hard that he staggered backwards " What the hell do you think you are doing?! " He snarled, feeling hurt at being rejected.
" Uh... I'm... I'm sorry sir! " Ava's voice trembled as she replied. Well, what was wrong with him anyway? She thought in confusion. She had seen passion in his eyes just some minutes ago so where had it all disappeared to? Or had she just imagined the whole thing in her head?
No dummy, you didn't imagine anything because I saw the whole thing, but it was clearly lust that was written in hie eyes and not passion girl!, Her inner voice mocked silently.
Oh wow, so she was not mistaken, she thought as she embraced the usual intrusion of her inner voice.
" I was just about to arrange some things and put them in order before I take my leave " She said in a more steady voice.
He ignored her and brushed past her to sit on the bed. The manly scent he left behind made Ava feel like there were butterflies in her stomach and she liked it. A second later, she turned to find him sitting like an angry kid who was just on the verge of throwing a tantrum for not being fed dinner.
Ugh, you're such a big baby Alex, she thought to herself but didn't realize she had said that aloud until Alex raised his head to look at her and he squinted his eyes. He was trying to figure out if he really heard her right. Ava widened her eyes when she realized what she just did.
" Oh! I didn't... Did I really say that?! " Her hands went up to cover her mouth in an instant, as though she wanted to take the words back and fear was written all over her face.
" No, you said I looked hot and sexy " He answered with an angry twist to his mouth.
Ava of course, knew her was being ironic but it even made the situation worse he was every bit the description he just gave of himself. She was sure he must have been getting compliments like that from girls a lot.
" Holla when you find your voice so you can dish out my food, I'm famished " He let out a yawn which Ava knew was faked and laid back on the bed. She frowned slightly when his words hit home.
" Uh? You ... You won't fire me?! " She asked anxiously and clung to the tiniest bit of hope she had.
He stared at her with an expressionless face and there was no malice in the way he looked at her now. It was just an.... expressionless face, nothing suited it more than that.
" Imma do just that if you keep bugging me and no to your question, I'm not in a position to do that even though I wanna fire you so bad. Like I said, I'm not in a position to do that, am I? " He threw his own question at her with a raised eyebrow.
He didn't expect her to answer and was surprised when she did " Of course! You're the boss and you can do anything you want! " She exclaimed in exasperation.
His eyebrow shot up even more as he weighed and considered her words " Anything? " He asked in a very low voice.
Ava's throat went dry as she read more meaning into what he said and her face went hot.
She hiccuped " Uh... Maybe not anything " Her cheeks went up in flames as they turned pink.
He didn't say anything further and the silence in the room lengthen. It was so thick that it be could cut it with a rope.
She broke the silence by forcing out a slight cough, it was more like she cleared her throat anyway.
" So uh... You're not firing me? " She asked again.
" As I've not recovered fully, I'm afraid I'd still need a nanny " He replied casually and there was no anger evident in his voice.
" Babysitter " She corrected quietly.
It seemed to Ava that his right eyebrow would stay up until he couldn't keep it up anymore because the rate at which his eyebrow shot up at every given chance was a bit exaggerated and unnecessary, she thought with a slight roll of her eyes. If Alex noticed, he kept quiet, preferring not to engage her in a fruitless and childish argument. He gave no indication that he saw what she did.
" Whatever. So till I'm able to handle things myself, you'll be with me " He said, waving off her initial interruption.
YOU'LL BE WITH ME, those words rang in her ears and she blocked them out, silently scolding herself so she would not get carried away by the magical words. Instead, she decided to focus on what he said before that and made up her mind to push him to the edge just like he had done in the last few hours.
" Handle things yourself? " She asked innocently even though she knew what he meant.
He swung his head in her direction in speed " Okay that's it, can you just do away with the questions? " He snapped but his expression softened as he watched her blink her eyes ever so innocently in a way he found adorable.
Fuck, where on earth did Jack brought this lady from? He asked himself silently. Damn her for looking so innocent and sexy. Now all he could think about was making her lie on the bed and having his way with her. The smoky gaze cleared and his eyes were replaced with their usual harshness.
" Now get me my fucking food, Miss Evans " He said and gave her a look that clearly meant his orders were to be carried out with immediate effect.
Ava didn't intend to disobey him anyway but she still had to drum her name into his head
" It's Adam, sir "
