Chapter 23

Alex's next look was enough to make her get to work automatically as he pinned her with a deadly glare to which Ava returned with one of her own in full force before she came back to her senses and realized she had been glaring at her boss. With a shaky smile, she turned and started to dish out his food. She felt his eyes on her but refused to give in to the temptation to check if he was really staring at her.

" He's awake??! " Angela shrieked in a high pitched sound as she almost toppled over the chair out of surprise and shock. Her secretary Tyler, took some steps back to avoid being the target of whatever the emotion his boss was feeling. Being so sly and unpredictable, one never know what Angela's next action would be.

" I asked you a question, Tyler " She added when the poor secretary seemed to be too scared to speak.

" Yes... Yes ma'am " He finally found his voice and answered.

" How... When?! " Angela asked frantically, pacing back and forth in the spacious office.

Of course it was a rhetorical question and Tyler knew it so he kept his eyes glued to the floor. In a blink of an eye, Angela threw away all the files on the desk in fury. She visibly calmed down after the whole drama and swept her hands through her hair.

" Are... Are you okay? " Tyler asked timidly but to his utmost surprise, Angela smiled at him sweetly and heaved a sigh.

" What do you think Tyler, shall we pay him a visit? " She asked

Tyler shook his head vigorously but as usual, Angela didn't pay him any attention as she sashayed out of the office, swinging her hips effortlessly. Well, she was really a bitch, Tyler muttered a curse under his breath and began to pick up the files. He sometimes wondered why she asked his opinion on something when she knew she wouldn't consider it the least bit. If not for the pay that was so good, he would have left the goddamn company a long time ago.

" Hey Ava, how are you doing? " Jack greeted as he walked into Alex's room where Ava was doing some clean up.

Ava looked up and smiled " Hey Jack, I'm great thanks. Do you need something? " She asked as she laid down the bed covers.

Jack shook his head but she probably didn't see what he did so he spoke " Uh no, I just wanted to ask if you'd like to go along with me to bring Alex home "

Ava's eyes brightened instantly with obvious happiness and it had nothing to do with the fact that her boss was coming back home.

" That's good news! Well, it's perfect timing because I was just tidying up his room " She said gayly.

" Okay that's fine but uh... " Jack took a pause and waved his fingers through his curly hair as he thought of how to put his words in a way she would understand.

Ava frowned " Jack, is something wrong? " She looked up to him in sheer curiosity, wanting to know why he acted that way.

" No I'm fine, it's not me but Alex. The thing is, he doesn't like people going through his things and most especially not in his absence " He explained calmly.

Ava's mouth formed an " Oh " as she visibly looked a bit taken aback by his words but she was not completely surprised as she already figured Alex would be a man who liked privacy.

" I've gone through his things before though " She said more to herself but Jack heard her anyway and asked " Was he with you then? "

Ava nodded " Yeah "

" And he didn't give you any sign that he didn't like his things being touched? " Jack probed further, not the least bit surprised that Alex had gone easy on the lady. He had a thing for her after all, Jack reckoned.

Ava shook her head " No, at least I didn't notice anything anyway, or it was probably because he was... not in his right senses then "

" Ava, I've told you Alex had always been in his right mind, he just couldn't talk because of the accident he was involved in. That didn't make him any less of a man and you know it too " And Jack gave her a look that said he was aware of the sexual chemistry between them ( Alex and Ava ).

" So we're going to pick him up, huh? " Ava asked, quickly changing the subject because he was damn right. Jack sent her a knowing smile and left the conversation at that. Her action just confirmed his suspicion.

" Yeah, I'll wait for you downstairs " He patted her shoulder and headed out.

" Okay, I'll be out in ten " Ava called out after him and went back to what she was doing before he came in, already forgotten what he told her. She didn't go through his things though, she just tidied up the room and went out, quietly closing the door behind her.

Maggie was having a conversation with Jack and they stopped talking when they sighted her. Her guts told her the conversation was about her and her suspicion was confirmed when Maggie gave her an anxious look. It was obvious that she had Ava's best interest at heart. Now Ava remembered that she was yet to fill the woman in on the details of what the fate of her job would be after the last visit to the hospital.

Smiling, she took Maggie's hands in hers and squeezed them " Everything will be fine Maggie, I promise "

Maggie smiled back but it didn't quite reach her eyes " I hope so, oh I really hope everything will be fine "
