15 - FOREVER IS AN ILLUSION
-ENRIQUE-
" I can't believe how great you two look together." My mother shrieks happily.
I sigh, rolling my eyes as Sabrina giggles.
" Who knew I would get to marry a prince one day." Sabrina smiles.
" You wouldn't because I was never yours, remember," I whisper to her as her glare hardens on me.
" But you are now," she mumbles.
" Whatever, Sabrina." I sigh.
" I'll go attend some guests." Mom smiles as she walks away from us.
" Don't ever pull that stunt again, Sabrina," I growl.
" Which stunt ?" she frowns.
" What you did last night." I sigh.
" We'll talk later Enrique," she whispers turning back to the crowd.
The hall was dressed heavily, guests were all over the place. Sabrina was sitting beside me in a gown, waiting for me to put a ring up her finger. But my eyes kept waiting for the one I wanted to see.
Will she come? No ? Maybe, yes?
The atmosphere of the room suddenly changed, I felt too cold all of a sudden. I rubbed my abdomen gently feeling a weird sensation there. Was it butterflies in my tummy? Or nervousness seeping into my veins? I couldn't tell.
My lungs ran out of air for a moment when I looked up, there she was walking down the stairs looking like an angel.
Her face was pale, her eyes looked tired, her condition pierced my heart. It's all because of me. Shawn was just beside her, his hand was around her waist and they walked down.
She was wearing a long, beige chiffon dress, with thin spaghetti straps on her shoulders and a diamond necklace around her neck.
There was a cute pout on her face as she looked around. It reminded me of last night when she was cuddled on my chest, sleeping like a baby. My heart broke when I had to drop her in her room before she woke up in the morning.
As soon as her eyes connected with mine, I looked away. Dang, it! An asshole I am!
" Enrique, have this." Sabrina giggles handing me a glass of wine.
" You're enjoying yourself." I snap at her.
I was having a headache already.
"It's my engagement, why shouldn't I ?" she frowns.
" It's just an arrangement between us. Remember, we're having a contract marriage. After two years, you'll go your way and I'll go mine." I snap at her.
If true love exists then I've only felt that for one girl and always will for only her.
" Yeah but I've read stories where contract marriages turn into love and they live happily ever after." she mumbles softly.
" Look Sabrina, I'll recommend you to stop dreaming right now. Fairytales don't exist and 'happy ever after' is just an illusion. Plus, no matter what you do, I'll never be able to love you." I growl plastering a smile on my face so people don't know what's happening here.
Sabrina looks at me with tears in her eyes. Her lips trembled as she looked down, wiping her tears.
'' Why do the people I love, always make me realize that loving me is too difficult ?" she whispers.
" Loving you isn't difficult Sabrina but I'm not the one for you." I mumble. She nods wiping her tears.
" I understand," she whispers looking away.
Argh. I don't like hurting her feelings but its better than giving her fake hopes.
" Enrique, Sabrina, come and meet Mrs Hale." My father calls.
I sigh, loosening my tie before I walk up to him with Sabrina.
" She's a spaewife," Sabrina whispers.
' Spaewife is a person who predicts future'
" Pleasure to see you here, Mrs Hale." I smile.
" Thanks for joining us today," Sabrina says.
" Happy to meet you too." she smiles.
There was a glint in her eyes as she suddenly took my hand in hers, staring into my eyes intently.
" You've lost a lot, I see." she smiles. I clear my throat trying to take my hand out of hers but she gripped it tightly.
" I wish life had better timing for you and her. I know, it's painful but you'll have to let her go." Mrs Hale says as I snatch my hand out of her hold.
This woman is a maniac. Sabrina forwards her hand to her as she smiles taking her hand.
'' Oh my child, we are all given two eyes, two ears, two hands, two legs but only one heart. Know why ? Because you have to look for the other one. You'll meet him soon but don't make the mistake of finding your true soulmate in a stranger." she says glancing at me.
I'm the stranger. No doubts !
Sabrina looked shocked for a moment before she nodded taking her hands away.
" Mrs Hale, mine too please." Elliot chirps forwarding his hand.
I rub the back of my neck as Shawn and Sage stand near us watching Mrs Hale. Sage bit her lips, looking at her in awe.
" Your love is innocent, it's pure, it's childish and anyone who will get it will be lucky more than anything. Don't hold it back, say it to her." Mrs Hale smiles at Elliot as he glances at Sage and then back at Mrs Hale.
I knew my brother is crazy for Sage. He always was. The fear gripped my heart as hope shone in his eyes by Mrs Hale's words.
" Won't you give me your hand ?" Mrs Hale asks Sage.
Sage stares at her with wide eyes before shaking her head as no.
" Come on, give it." Elliot chuckles putting her hand in Mrs Hale's.
" Please let go." Sage mumbles trying to get her hand away.
" She doesn't want it. Let go." Shawn mutters.
" I understand." Mrs Hale mumbles after a few minutes.
Ugh ! Who even let her in ?!
" Life will go on my child but it will never be the same again. Your life is going to change again and this time, I'm scared you'll lose what pieces of yourself you're holding on to." she mutters as Sage gasps.
" That's enough, now. Mrs. Hale, please let go." Shawn growls trying to pull her hand.
" He's coming or he already has. Be aware, the devil never comes in horns and a crown of thorns on his head, he comes in everything you'd wish for, his voice is sweet, his eyes are soft but he plays with fire," she says.
She let's go of Sage's hand, smiling at her.
" May God give you the power to endure what the future holds for you." she smiles at Sage before walking away.
We stare at her retreating figure with wide eyes. This woman just managed to plant thousand of stress trees into our minds in just a few minutes. This night can't get any worse.
" You're looking gorgeous, Sabrina," Elliot mumbles breaking the silence.
" Thanks, Elliot. You're looking handsome too and Sage, you're looking great." Sabrina smiles.
" Thanks. Congratulations." Sage meekly mumbles as Sabrina nods.
" Congratulations, you too," Sage mumbles looking at me.
" Yeah . . . ahh . . . thanks." I smile before biting my tongue.
Why am I speaking like a toddler !?
" Congrats." Shawn spats at me.
" Thanks, brother-in-law." I wink at him.
" Fuck off." he glares at me.
" Sage, I'm sorry for whatever I did," Sabrina mumbles after a few minutes.
" What did you do to her ?" Shawn immediately jumps into an angry mode.
" Nothing. It's fine." Sage mumbles meekly.
" Thank you for joining us today." Sabrina smiles.
" Really Sabrina? Are you dumb or something? Can't you see that dad has forced us to stand here with smiles plastered on our faces? I'm not happy with you marrying a coward like him and never will be." Shawn growls before looking away.
"It's alright Sabrina. The best thing I've learned so far is to stop fighting for someone who is okay with losing me." Sage whispers.
Her words unintentionally hit a spot in my heart which I was avoiding for all these years. Tears pricked into my eyes as I blinked them away.
I was never okay with losing you, my Sage. That day, I felt as if I died too, everyone just forgot to mourn over me.
" Enrique." I turn around to see Sabrina's dad gesturing for us to come up to the stage.
The engagement ceremony was going to begin now. My hands shook as I pushed them in the pocket of my pants to avoid anyone from seeing this side of me.
Sage's face flashed into my eyes again and again as we walked up the stage.
We stand opposite each other as they hand us the rings. Sabrina was a broken smile on her face but my condition was so bad that I couldn't even gather up a damn smile on my face.
Just when she was about to put the ring on my finger, I pulled my hand back and looked back at the crowd.
There she was, looking at us with tears in her eyes. Her lips trembled as she leaned onto Shawn for support.
" I can't do this," I mutter as gasps fill in the room.
