"What if they don't believe it?"
Amber told him that night as they talked about what would happen with her current job. Ever since she laid her demands of having a different room and no sex, he had been a bit silent. He had not rejected her demands and she thought that he was probably glad that she had spared him the necessity to say it himself.
She repeatedly told him how much of a crazy idea it was, and he would listen and keep his silence throughout her statements and carry out as though she hadn't spoken. Amber tried to understand why his father was so obsessed with his life. She tried to unearth some information about his father before he was hospitalized but to no avail, Surely there would be a reason why his father was depressed and tried his best to get Alex to take a wife.
A little that Alex did tell that his mother died at a young age and his father remarried three years later producing another son, his little brother who was a great example of a complete anti-social and introverted man. He showed no desire in continuing the family business or other lines of income and therefore hardly mixed with people around him. His stepmother 'Alison' was never in the picture in his life and that was about it.
This was his way of doing the best he could to try and get his father to be happy after years. To show his father that he had got his life together and settled down and that he wouldn't have to carry out the exhausting hassle of running the company and worry about who will handle the empire in the furture.
In a way dragging Amber along as his partner in crime in exchange for a job. A job well paid and laid back which not all could have even after moving up ranks constantly in the company. Jobs like these only were given to the people who were trusted and well known by the supervisor. A job that could take her out of the busy life and distance herself from the messy life she was living right now.
It helped her to pretend that this agreement was also a job. She distanced herself from the thought that she would be with him all day, a part of her that was excited to see his life outside of work had been dulled greatly by the fact that this wasn't a laid-back trip. This was an assignment that would be tough to conquer. Risks like them somehow finding out about this secret heavily depended on her convincing them. And if this all fell apart, she would never be able to work in the current job she had or in a position even closer to this.
Then it would back to square one.
'They aren't that cynical'
"They aren't that gullible either" She whispered as she started outside the car window as the car speeds down the road towards Alex's Penthouse at six in the morning.
Alex had offered to buy her better clothes and anything she might need to look presentable for his family. Amber declined, she had good clothes to appear in. With the constant informal appointments of her Boss, she had to attend Amber had a collection of elegant dresses she bought for herself. Now sitting in the back seat of his chauffeur-driven Audi, she was having second doubts about whether she could pull it off. She was a very flexible girl, changing her presence and appereance in the setting and mood of different events. It was easy for Amber to dress up accordingly but this wasn't a meeting with clients or her Boss's friends which was business realated. Amber has to put forth a whole different personality to please Alex's family.
