Chapter 57 - Counterattack: Part I
LUNA ASTERBELLE’S POV
I've been running back and forth, from the monitor to examine what’s happening out there and to the windows, where I could clearly see a mass of werewolves lurking by. If this was what Dawn was referring to, then I really am in grave danger!
Everything I thought of wasn’t useful at all. Whenever I tried to escape through the window, I kept on getting seen by some of the wolves, which made me nervous about the possibility that they would gang up on me. On the other hand, the students from the same floor as me were endlessly banging on my door; they’re harmonized in telling me to go out of my room.
I clenched both of my fists as I heaved out a sigh. "Things turned downhill real quick."
As soon as I opened the door, a stranger pulled me out of my room. "Did you have a death wish back there, Miss Asterbelle?" she yelled at me with such a frustrated expression. "What were you planning to do when they suddenly launched an attack on you?" she added before she released my hand.
"Who are you? And what are wolves doing here? Wasn’t the dorm protected by some sort of special barrier?"
The woman with a checker-patterned skirt and a fitted, short-sleeved black uniform played with some strands of her chestnut hair, then stepped forward as she slightly leaned her head towards my face. "You have the looks, but you kind of have a low level of understanding. I’m sure Miss Holmes would’ve thrown you outside the buildings to let those hungry wolves have a feast on you."
Her statement didn't sound convincing—more like, she's provoking me to show my "true colors".
Another round of explosives was heard, and after a while, all of it was getting much closer to my destination, which is why I chose to disregard what the woman said to me and find a way out of this dorm on my own.
"Where are you going now? Do you really want to die without seeing the King?" she suddenly mumbled, stopping me in my tracks. "The King informed us ahead of time that you would be acting like this; he added that you’re a stubborn one and that we have to keep our eyes on you."
"How do you know him?"
"That’s none of your concern, Miss Asterbelle. Come with me; the rest of my classmates here would be guarding your room. And by the way, you can call me Lizzy," she finally introduced herself while she was pushing me towards the other exit, which I thought was already a dead end.
She pulled down a lever that was on the right side, and the wall in front of us suddenly split open. There were spider webs all over the place, and it was somehow similar to the underground organization of the mafia. It’s kind of like a replica.
When we continued to walk down the passageway, Lizzy broke the silence. "We’re currently short on members, so we need your help. We heard from the King that you’re capable of using guns," she said.
I instantly realized that something wasn’t right when Lizzy mentioned that I could use those weapons. "There’s no way that King Dawn would overestimate me like that." I shrugged off her attempt to make me join their forces.
However, it didn’t last long. I was allured by the sight of the boxes that contained silver bullets. It wasn’t the ordinary ones; even from a glance, I can tell that those were special and were only designated to be used with the type of pistol that Mr. Asterbelle has given me.
"Isn’t that a .500 S&W, the one with such a lengthy barrel? Woah, this is the first time I actually saw one; I only see those in movies," Lizzy happily said. She almost stole the gun away from me because of her excitement.
"I have no idea about weapons," I coldly replied to her as I made my way over to where the boxes were. I had to reload mine with five loads afterwards. "So? What am I supposed to do now? You need my assistance to fight against those wolves, right?"
"Huh? Are you going to use that?" Lizzy pointed at my pistol, and I nodded my head once as a response. "You can’t be serious. With those numerous wolves, you’re going to rely on a weapon that can only be fired five times?" she voiced out her doubts.
"It’s not like I’m going to be alone in the battlegrounds. Y’all are going to be there too; I’ll just be lending you a hand from the back lines."
Lizzy sighed before she walked past me. She grabbed a wooden bow along with an arrow that had silver on its pointed edge. "If you’re attacking behind our backs, it would be best for you to use this, since you’re not yet trained with how to shoot a sniper."
After I got the bow and arrows from Lizzy, she let me practice for a few minutes. Fortunately, all of my attempts were a success, as they landed a hundred percent accurate on the target, which was a mannequin.
We left the storage room after Lizzy had chosen her rifle. I had a bag filled with arrows behind my back. The two of us were reunited with her other classmates, who were already well prepared for the worst. Lizzy was the one who led the group, and of course, I was the one last in line as we all marched downstairs, then stopped at the dorm’s lobby.
"Can we really kill those wolves? Wouldn’t their Alpha be vexed and seek revenge on the people here in the dorm and the academy?" I worriedly questioned, which was the reason why we stopped along the way.
Most of them bowed their heads, as if they were hesitant to give me an answer. Only Lizzy had the courage to say, "They were the ones who disrupted our peace first. If anyone has the right to seek vengeance here, it would be us—it should be us."
Once everything had been settled, we moved over to secure the positions that we had discussed beforehand. I was the only one who had to stand by the branch of a giant tree to guide over the other students, who were all scattered in the entire woods.
It seemed like the wolves already anticipated that we were about to initiate our plan; one was helplessly dragged out of her spot with the wolf’s aggressiveness.
It was too late for me to take action since I was fed up with watching the girl cry as she tried to resist being pulled away. She could have shot the wolf, but she let the weapon she carried release from her grip as her body rolled over the stones.
"Such a pitiful kid," I mumbled to myself.
I didn’t even notice that my hair was literally flowing along the strong wind when I grabbed an arrow behind me, then placed it on the center of my bow as I tightly held its grip, pulling it together with the string.
I carefully aimed at the wolf’s head at the same time that I controlled the pace of my breath.
The moment I let go was also the same second when the wolf lost control over his own body, which set the student free. She continuously ran, heading back in the direction of the dorm to forfeit the battle, even though we all agreed that no one should dare to run away.
The wolf I shot got immobilized, but I know that it still hasn’t lost its life.
Not yet.
