Chapter 41
Before I knew what was happening, I had almost eaten half of my food on my plate. It was delicious, Naomi is a great cook.
"Did you make all this amazing food all by yourself?" I had to ask to confirm. Because it tastes like something only a professional will cook.
"Yes my dear, are you enjoying your food?" Asked Naomi as she smiled at me.
"Yes, it is very delicious. You are a professional." I complimented her, making her smile even more.
"Thank you. After I lost my husband, I needed something to distract me a little and cooking is one thing I love doing. So I enrolled in a cooking school. It helped me greatly by lifting my heavy heart and enhancing my cooking skills."
"I am so sorry about your loss." Instantly I regretted complimenting her cooking skill. Because of me she is forced to remember the death of her husband.
"You don't need to apologize, it is fine. I feel better now." she wiped the tears off her face.
"Enough with the sad talks, let us talk about something exciting." Eunice tried to change the topic because she was also getting emotional and was about to cry.
"Yes you're right." Naomi brightened up as she thought of something exciting to say. "So tell us, how did you guys meet?" She wiggled her eyebrow at us as she looked between me and Adam with inquisitive eyes.
Uh, uh, this topic is not so interesting to talk about most especially for me because I don't know what to say. I am still yet to rehearse what to say.
"Adam is the best person to tell the story." I looked at Adam apologizing silently so he won't get upset for putting everything on him.
"Really?" Eunice asked, turning to her grandson.
"Yes. Right Adam?" I nudge his hand a little under the table for him to speak. He has been quite lost in his own thoughts.
"Me?" He looked at me inquisitively as if saying; "Why me?"
But I ignored him. "Yes you, have you forgotten how you love to narrate our love story every time? You keep singing it like music so now is the time to tell your family" I nudged his hands again, motioning my head towards his family so he will stop staring and speak up.
"Oh no." He chuckled, still looking at me. "That never happened Catherine."
Oh no, he has ruined everything! I almost stepped on his foot but controlled myself. Stepping will only draw attention to us more.
"You are the one that likes singing it like music. In fact, you strictly told me on our way here that you would love to be the one to tell my mother and grandma, remember?" He winked at me.
This jerk, I wanted to spank him. He is supposed to be helping me by coming up with ideas after all he is the man, isn't he?
"No babe," I snorted. "You should have known that I was only joking. I mean how cruel can I be to take away the one thing you love so much?" I winked at him in return.
At this point, Naomi and Eunice could no longer take our batter anymore, but Eunice spoke up first
"Alright, one of you should just tell us the story already. We are tired." She sighed.
"Yes Adam, go ahead." I nudged him harder this time around.
"Ohm, you see Grandma" he cleared his throat before continuing "It is a long story. We met while she was doing her, what is it again?" He turned to me asking.
"My ohm" I think quickly. "My masters." I chuckled a little.
"Yes. We met while she was doing her masters, it was love at first sight. And grandma." He paused again but th8s time he turned to his grandma. "Our love blossomed, and here we are." He finished, grinning sheepishly.
Oh no, was that the best he could think of? My head hung low in disappointment but it didn't last long as the sound of clapping filled the room. "What?" I looked up to see his grandmother and mother smiling excitedly
"Wow, what a beautiful story son"
"It is?" Adam and I asked in unison as we looked at each other.
"You think so mother?"
"Yes son. It reminds me of the time I and your father met. Our story is quite similar."
She was about to tell the story but Adam stopped her.
"Mother please, some other time."
"Oh sorry, pardon me dear. You guys must be tired and want to rest." Turning towards the door she called for one of the maids to take us to our room.
It was a huge relief for me, but I didn't like the part where I and Adam will stay in the same room.
Although we both agreed to start afresh I still feel a little awkward staying in the same room with him. I would have preferred it if we were given separate rooms.
I wanted to ask his mother for that but Adam stopped me.
"It will make grandma sad. In their eyes we are engaged and to be married soon, remember?"
"Yeah that is true. But how will we manage now?" Looking around, a perfect idea came to my mind. "I will take the bed and you will take the floor."
Without waiting for his response, I opened the wardrobe hoping to find an extra blanket. Thankfully I found one.
"There is an extra pair of blankets here so you can use it."
"And who said I agreed to it?" He frowned at me. The thought of him sleeping on the floor must have upset him real bad because his eyebrows are tightly knitted together.
"Well I just assumed you won't have a problem with it."
"Well that is your problem, you always assume and end up assuming wrong." He snapped.
Ouch, that hurts a little.
"I am sorry for jumping into conclusion but the fact still remains you can sleep in the bed."
"And why not?" He raised his brow at me, as if seeking an answer. "If you wish to sleep on the floor feel free I won't stop you." Walking past me he went straight to bed to sit.
I rolled my eyes at his childishness. "Adam please be reasonable, you.."
"No you be reasonable." He cut me off. "What is wrong if we stay on the same bed, are you perhaps scared I might take advantage of you?" He asked in disbelief.
"Of course not." I gasped. Can't believe he would even think that.
"Good then let's share the bed. Or better still you can use the floor or even the couch over there." He points towards an orange couch in the room. "While I take the bed, I don't care." And without saying another word Adam stood from the bed and left the room. Slamming the door behind him.
"Sighing," I sat on the bed, this wasn't how I planned things to turn out. I thought we were making progress. Opening my purse, I decided to give my best friend a call. Haven't heard from her since yesterday.
