Chapter 47
"Grandma, it is Catherine."
"Yes, what is wrong with her?" Eunice was starting to worry with the way Adam wasn't saying anything. "Tell me please what is going on?"
"I.." He stutters, not sure where to start from.
Just then, Eunice noticed the presence of a third person.
"And who is she?"
Eunice knows her face looked familiar but can't remember where she saw her.
"H.. her name is Kendal and the reason behind all this mess."
"What do you mean boy? Who is Kendal?"
Walking close to her, Kendal stretched her hand towards Adam's grandma and introduced herself since he was hesitating.
"The mother of Adam's unborn child."
"What?" Eunice gasped in shock, almost choking as she coughed seriously.
"Grandma are you okay?" Adam ran to her side before gently rubbing her back lightly to ease her pain.
Kendal was about to say something else but Adam threw a look of warning her way daring her to say another word.
"Please grandma come with me, you need to go to your room and rest." He tried to help Eunice to her room but she refused, yanking her hand off.
"First, you need to tell me what this woman here meant by the mother of your unborn child Adam?" She looked at her grandson waiting for answers. "I thought you love Catherine so what is this I am hearing boy?"
"Yes grandma but please come with me first you're unwell." He does not like the way she was coughing.
"I am perfectly fine, thank you." She yanked her hands off before staring daggers at him ready to do it fire.
But luckily for Adam, Catherine's door flew open.
Upon hearing Eunice cough violently, Catherine was forced to come out from her room. She feared that something bad had happened to her.
"Grandma Eunice," she called carefully the moment she opened the door.
"Catherine dear, I am happy you're fine." Eunice tore her gaze from Adam's before running to Catherine's side.
"Yes I am fine, but are you okay?" She tried to put a smile on her face just to assure Eunice that she was fine. But the old woman can see through her pretense.
"I know my grandson has hurt you deeply and I apologize on his behalf. Please don't leave him, you have brought a smile to his face and my Naomi's face too. Please don't call off your engagement because of his stupidity."
"But," Catherine stopped before looking at Adam expecting him to say something in her defense.
Because there is no way Catherine can keep up with this pretense of their fake engagement when another woman is pregnant with his child.
When ad didn't say anything, Catherine continued but Eunice cut her off quickly before she could utter a word.
"Please Catherine, don't say no." She pleads with her eyes, almost in tears, that Catherine could not say no to the old woman.
"Alright, if that is what you want." Her voice became low because deep down she knows there is no way their pretense of a relationship will last.
Sooner or later, it will come to an end and she fears the time is already near. So she only said that just to put Eunice at ease in order not to stress her fragile heart.
Because if there is one thing she has come to learn is that most elderly once mostly have weak hearts either due to stress or sickness. Looking at Adam, Catherine gave him a look that they will have a long talk after this with a friend in her face.
"Hey, what is going on here?" Kendal finally spoke up after she had enough of the drama before her. "Are you all deaf or what? I said I am Adam's soon to be mother of his unborn child. Do you all even know what that means?"
"Yes we do. And if you have a little ounce of shame then you will know when to keep your mouth shut because this isn't the right time to speak or buttress your point." Catherine snapped before she could bridle her tongue.
With the way Eunice was shaking in her arms, Catherine was scared she might have a heart attack. After witnessing her father's heart attack at home Catherine can't bear to witness another one.
As she looked at Kendal standing so shameless without any atom of pity in her eyes for Eunice, she boiled in anger within her at the fact that there still exist cold self centered people like Kendal.
Still chewing her gum, Kendal stared at her while fuming in anger at Catherine's mere audacity to speak to her in such a rude tone. Were it not to be for Adam's presence, she would have put her in her place.
As she removed her gaze from Catherine to look at Eunice Kendal felt nothing for the old frail woman shooting daggers at her. Even if Eunice were to fall and die out of a heart attack Kendal honestly wouldn't care.
Because to her all that matters is to be with Adam and have him as her lawfully wedded husband, period. Stomping off, she went to the sitting room to go make herself at home while Adam and Catherine sorted out whatever was wrong with Eunice.
Watching Eunice leave without even pretending to care for the health of Adam's grandma made her feel pity for Adam's terrible taste in his choice of women. Honestly, she felt disappointed.
Even if not for his sake, at least for the sake his grandmother Adam should have fallen in love with a woman who cares for his family and not some selfish bitch like Kendal.
"Adam, I think you should take your grandma to her room to rest now."
Catherine was not ready to stay close to Adam for now. She still has to process everything in and get used to this new revelation. Just when she was trying to get used to the first revelation another hit her.
"No Catherine, I want both of you to take me to my room."
Eunice's optimum goal is to bring Adam and Catherine together at all cost because she considers Catherine to be a rare gem that cannot easily be found.
"Please my dear," she held her hand until Catherine had no choice but to agree and come along.
Wrapping her hand securely around Eunice, she helped Eunice to her room for fear she would fall if left alone at the way she was still shaking.
Following from behind, Adam admired the view before him. The way Catherine held his grandma so tenderly touched his heart and brought a loving smile to his face.
When Catherine finally opened up and came outside, Adam was relieved to see her safe and sound. He feared that she had done something terrible to harm herself but now he feels relief to see her safe and sound.
But he could tell she was still upset with him from her body language and the way she looks at him whenever their eyes lock. but he hoped to sort it out very soon.
