CHAPTER 49
"Now everything is ready and set to be eaten." Adam announced just moments after he brought out the freshly baked cookies from the oven.
"Yippee," she jumped in excitement.
Her mouth was already watering and she couldn't wait to have a taste of it. "It smells so good" she breathes in more of the delicious smell of a new freshly baked cookie has. "I bet it tastes as it smells." She licked her lips in anticipation, salivating in it as her eyes were about to pop out.
"Even better, just be patient my love."
My love?
Catherine looked at him in awe. For some strange reason, referring to her as 'my love' sounds strange to her ears.
Not taking note of how his words affected her, Adam focused his gaze intently on the cookies as he brought it out from the oven wearing a thick hand glove.
"How is the smoothie turning out?" He asked when he noticed how silent she had become.
"Great!" She snapped back to reality before turning to check on her smoothie.
It made her happy to see the smoothie she made. Although Adam did most of the work, Catherine took the credit and Adam didn't mind.
In fact he was happy to see her happy.
"Good. I think it is cool enough," he said referring to the already warm cookies.
"Yes, I can't wait to have a taste."
"Hmm, impatient are we?" He threw a bright smile her way before taking the cookies along with him to the dining table while Catherine strolled behind with the smoothie.
Holding one for Adam and one for her.
Taking her seat, Catherine dived in muttering a "mmm" with every bite she took.
"This is delicious Adam."
"Thank you," he smiled in appreciation at the compliment.
Seeing Catherine so excited like a child made him smile.
"No really, you're a lifesaver." She munched before stepping it down with some strawberry, apple and pineapple smoothie.
Since it was the only fruit available, Catherine had no choice than to use it like that.
"Really, I am glad you like it."
Adam isn't really a fan of cookies but seeing how happy Catherine is eating it brought him happiness too.
"So tell me, when did you learn how to cook?" The cookies taste so great in fact better than she had tasted. Dhe concluded Adam must be a pro.
"Since I was a child."
"What?" Her eyes widened in awe. "That young?"
"Actually, no." He smiled even more to see she took his words to mean in a literal way. "What I meant was as a child, I have always loved being around my mom and helping her in the kitchen. And as you Know, my mother has a special fondling for cooking. In fact cooking makes her happy.." He said as a flashback of when he was a child played in his mind.
Adam would always help his mother in the kitchen because he enjoyed doing it. Anytime his mother was in the kitchen making dinner she was always so excited, she derives joy whenever she sees her family eat the food she made with so much love.
But when his father died it was a big blow to them, especially his mother who has always depended on his father so much for everything.
His mother is a full housewife whose only work was to take care of her household. So what was she supposed to do when the person she was supposed to manage his home dies?
She lost herself.
Naomi lost herself completely and at a point, she felt like a total loser. Failing woefully in taking care and managing a simple task which was her home.
Although a plane crash isn't necessary Naomi's doing, she still felt responsible for it nonetheless.
Countless nights, Adam watched his mother cry herself to sleep blaming herself for his death. She blamed herself for not stopping his father when she could. As a wife, she felt it was her duty to keep her family safe from any harm and when she heard the news of her husband's death, she felt weak putting the blame all on herself.
Trying so many ways to ease his mother's pain, Adam decided to put his childhood years of watching his mother cook into good use and make her some homemade cookies since she has always loved cookies just like Catherine.
At a point it worked. Whenever his mother sees her son putting much effort to make her happy, it brings a smile to her face. But one day, she got up and decided it was time for her to leave and breathe in some fresh air far away from the toxic memories the mansion brought.
She came up with the idea of moving to Korea.
Just looking at a whole new culture uplifts his mother's soul by making her happy. From time to time Adam made sure to always come and check on her here in Korea to ensure she was safe and fine because he will not be capable of handling another loss.
"Oh my Adam, that was a whole lot. I feel bad for not being there with you when you had to go through all these alone."
Catherine has no idea why each time she asks a friendly question it always ends up being a bad one.
The once bubbling atmosphere has suddenly become laced with sadness. And seeing Adam so sad makes her even sadder than she already is for making him remember his painful memories.
"Adam," she placed her hand lightly on his hand. "I am sorry you had to go through this alone. Do you have any siblings?" She inquired since she hasn't heard of any brother or sister other than Adam.
"No, just me. But it's fine now because you're here with me." He smiled before taking her hand in his and kissing it lovingly.
Her cheeks reddened, making her blush. She felt so special and didn't want the moment to end. Locking her eyes with his they both shared how lovingly they adore each other making her blush even more when she saw the affection in his eyes.
But the beautiful moment didn't last long as Kendal came and ruined everything with her presence.
"Wow, cookies." Excitedly, she took the remaining cookies in Catherine's plate without her consent.
"Hey!"
"What, can't you share?" She glared down at Catherine.
"But it's mine-"
"Yeah, and now it is mine." She snapped before sitting herself on Adam's lap. "Baby," she cooed, battering her long lashes seductively but it only angered Adam with each passing minute she spent sitting on his lap.
"I was craving some cookies and look, here it is." She smiled excitedly. "Did you make it?"
Grabbing her arm he yanked her off.
"Get out!" Without saying anything else to her, he went to Catherine. "Please come let's go, she has ruined everything."
Standing Catherine went with him while feeling bad for Kendal. She feared that by the way Adam yanked at her might have hurt the baby in some way.
"Adam, will she be okay?" She inquired as they drew near to their room.
"Yes she will be fine, don't worry about her. She is full of drama." Opening the door, Adam helped her in before closing the door behind him.
Kendal went to the floor in tears at how badly Adam was treating her. Just a few days ago, everything was fine.
"So what went wrong?" She asked herself as she sobs silently.
