Someone Important
Diana was enjoying the warm soak when she heard someone knock.
"Your Majesty you are in here right? May I come in? I will help you bathe," a lady's voice said.
Diana gawked at the door wondering in horror what the words 'Your Majesty' meant.
'Did I soul-swap with someone really important?!'
"No need. I'm almost done. I'll finish up on my own," Diana responded in a puzzled tone.
She wondered if the person was really talking to her. But no one else was there. She was right to have responded. She ignored the honorific for the meantime. She had to play along or they would discover that she was not whoever they were calling 'Your Majesty.' She still had to weigh who she could and could not trust. She might be in a precarious situation.
'What's so difficult with bathing that I would need help? Is the owner of this body a pampered rich girl?'
Looking at the girl's supple hands that looked like they had never tried doing any hard work before, she could tell it was one pampered lady indeed. The words 'Your Majesty' were also giving her a bad feeling.
"I will prepare your dress then, Your Majesty," the voice said and Diana heard some shuffling about.
After the bath, when Diana got out, she was greeted by a beautiful lady wearing a maid's outfit. She blinked when she saw the dress that the maid chose for her. It was too grand. It looked like she was attending a grand event.
"Is there a simpler dress?" she asked and the maid looked at her as if puzzled.
"I shall prepare another then, Your Majesty," the maid said and bowed slightly before walking to the wardrobe nearby.
Diana gawked when the maid opened the wardrobe and it showed a wide room full of clothes and shoes. It was a walk-in wardrobe. She was relieved that the maid was not looking and did not notice her surprise. She must have looked like an idiot. Thankfully, she did not embarrass herself.
Following the maid in, Diana decided to choose the dress herself when the maid kept suggesting grand-looking clothes. She stopped herself from gawking at all the luxurious dresses and shoes that she saw.
Concluding that wearing one of those dresses might put her in debt, she wanted to remain in her bathrobe. But that would seem suspicious. She decided to pick the simplest-looking one, although it was still made of quality material.
The dress was a bit heavy compared to the lightweight thin dresses she usually wore at home. However, when she put it on, she was surprised that it did not feel heavy or uncomfortable at all. It must have been because the body she was in, was used to wearing such clothing.
The maid helped her get dressed and even combed and dried her hair. Diana was not used to it but remained silent to avoid seeming weird. A few minutes later, someone knocked at her room.
"Your Majesty, I brought your meal. May I come in?"
"Yes, you may," Diana replied and another beautiful woman wearing a maid's outfit entered pushing a trolley with what was supposed to be her meal.
Diana silently observed as the maid laid out the food on the table. She wanted to complain that the food was too much for her to eat alone. But she silently ate instead. She just tasted all the food that was brought and said that she was already full after tasting everything.
Her current situation still freaked her out so she was not really in the mood to eat. Diana wondered where the stranger who said he was her husband had gone.
With her whole body still exhausted even after the hot bath and a meal, Diana decided to stay in bed and wait for the stranger to return.
If the man was truly the husband of the body's owner, he would come to the room at night. She would talk to him then. She had a feeling that leaving the room on her own was not a good idea, especially since she still had no idea what the place was.
But to her disappointment, even after she ate dinner, the stranger did not come back at all. She once again thought that perhaps he was just pretending as the husband. However, the beautiful maid suddenly talked to her.
"Um, Your Majesty, did you and His Majesty, perhaps have a fight? He did not look well when he left your room earlier," the maid asked as she cleared the table.
Diana almost stared at the maid at the words 'His Majesty.' Then she recalled the stranger and realized that the maid must be talking about him.
"Um, yes. Kind of. I said some harsh words," Diana sweatdropped guiltily.
"Then is there anything you would like us to prepare to soothe His Majesty? That was the first time we ever saw His Majesty's mana become unstable," the maid said.
"Mana?" Diana stared at the maid. She did not understand what the maid meant. She knew that mana was something related to magic since she was a voracious reader.
'But what could they be talking about?'
"Yes, Your Majesty. His Majesty's mana was raging this morning that everyone who met him almost passed out."
"What? Where is he now?" She recalled how dangerous he looked in the morning and the aura that surrounded him. She concluded that perhaps that was what they were talking about.
"He had been in his chambers since this morning Your Majesty."
Diana blinked at the words 'his chambers.' She realized that the husband and wife were staying in different rooms. She concluded that she must be in the residence of the two.
'Perhaps they didn't get along well or prefer having their own space?'
Before she could ask more, there was a knock on the door.
"Your Majesty, the King's butler wishes to speak with you," a voice said.
"Let him in," Diana responded after she glanced at the maid beside her. A lady wearing armor opened the door. Diana barely stopped herself from gawking at what looked like a female knight standing outside her door. If her guess was right, the female knight was guarding her.
'Am I in some kind of play? What are all these weird and suspicious things about?'
She gasped when the said butler kneeled at her feet right after he was ushered in.
"Your Majesty, this humble servant implores you. Could Your Majesty please speak to His Majesty? He had not eaten anything since dinner yesterday and had been continuously drinking since this morning," the butler said.
"Stand up. You don't have to kneel. I'll talk to him," Diana responded quickly. The guilt she felt from all the words she had spouted resurfaced. She realized that the guy might be wallowing in sorrow right now.
"Ouch," she was about to follow the butler but she bumped into something right at the door. An invisible film was stopping her from going out. "What's this?" she frowned as she tapped it with her hand.
The maid who was with Diana touched the film and got out of the room just fine. The butler, female knight, and the maid tried going in and out of the room twice and they could freely enter or exit. It was weird that only Diana, could not go out.
"This must be a spell by His Majesty," the butler said.
"He's imprisoning me just because we had a fight?!" Diana frowned. She ignored the things she did not understand. She concluded that she would think about the complicated things later.
"Surely His Majesty did not mean it that way, Your Majesty. He must have had his reasons," the butler quickly said and bowed when Diana narrowed her eyes at him.
"If you cannot exit here, maybe you could use the connecting door, Your Majesty," the maid suggested.
"Connecting door?" Diana did not know something like that existed.
The maid guided them to the said connecting door and she successfully passed through it. Right after she did, the scent of alcohol greeted her.
And there he was. The stranger was sitting on a couch with a bottle of liquor in hand. He looked like a man who suddenly got divorced by his wife without an explanation. He was gloomy and unapproachable with a dark aura swirling around him. For some reason, he still looked elegant though.
Diana suddenly had the urge to hug him. He looked like an abandoned puppy that got lost in the neighborhood but was trying to act tough so as not to be bullied by other dogs.
"Isn't that too much? Is he trying to kill himself," Diana gasped when she noticed that there were a lot of emptied bottles near the stranger which should not have been drunk by one person.
"Diana?!" the man sat up straight upon hearing her voice and settled the bottle on the table. He quickly walked to her.
Diana noticed how the guy had suddenly brightened up. The dark aura around him disappeared and there was a hopeful look in his eyes.
"Did you come to see me?" he asked, already caressing her cheek. There was a hint of a smile on his lips and a slight glimmer in his eyes. He looked happy that she went to see him. He suddenly looked like a puppy waiting to be comforted by his master after getting scolded or ignored for a while. If he was not so tall, she might have patted his head.
"Yes." What else would she say; she had no choice when someone kneeled at her feet. But she also needed to talk to him so she was not lying.
"Clear the room," the stranger said and the maid and butler bowed to them before they both scurried out of the room. When it was just the two of them, the stranger said: "Diana, you do care about me right?"
"O-of course," Diana responded. Anyone else who saw just how much he drank would say that. After all, it was her fault he was doing that. But the way how he said her name with so much affection made her feel guilty.
She had to wonder why she ended up having the same name as this man's wife and now she even occupied her body. She wanted to explain what was going on. But before she could say more, she felt his lips on hers.
