Chapter 31: Alarms and Chauffeurs.
KIKI.
“Beep! Beep!”
I tossed around on my bed, clutching my duvet closer. I was still on the stage, walking forward to receive my award with a billion-dollar smile on my face. The crowd hooted, giving me resonating applause.
“Beep! Beep!”
Something sounded again. I reached for it to turn down the volume when it beeped again. I groaned and peeled my eyes open. I rubbed my sleepy eyes, sitting up in bed.
My eyes clashed with the alarm which was now beeping again. When I checked the time it displayed, I almost shrieked. Immediately, I dashed out of bed and grabbed my stuff to have a bath.
I barely spent five minutes in the shower before I hurried out with a towel wrapped around my body. I rubbed my lotion in haste, at the same time checking out for a suitable outfit for today. I had been so tired yesterday that I failed to do all these beforehand.
Eventually, I settled for the blue jeans I didn't like to wear. I've had it for ages but I didn't wear it cos I discovered that all it did was attract men to me. So, I got it out and quickly slipped it on, grabbed a black matching blouse with a zipper at the front. It exposed my cleavages a bit which was why I didn't like to wear it but at the moment, I didn't have a choice. I brushed through my hair with a comb, not bothering to pack it.
I matched the clothing with my regular heel and grabbed my office bag before dashing out of the room to meet Jojo. He was awake, drawing in his notebook. I rubbed his hair, planting a kiss on his forehead.
“You look good.” He mumbled, his eyes filtering over me.
“Thanks, baby.” I smiled at him. “So, I'm already late to work as it is but can you handle yourself?” I asked worriedly, my right hand on my hip.
“Yes, Kiki. I can handle myself. Ms Grace will be here, remember?” He juggled my brain and I nodded.
“Alright, sweetie. Do call me if there is a problem.” I ruffled his hair again and then turned around to leave when he pulled me back. He handed me my phone. I mouthed him a thank you and proceeded to get out while clicking on my phone's switch button.
I went red at the missed calls lining the notification bar. The driver had hit me up with numerous calls. I made a move for the door, hurrying out. When I stepped outside, the first thing I took note of was this expensive shiny car that was parked, impatiently with the driver beside it.
My heart did a double flip as I started to walk up to him, ignoring the neighbor's curious glances and murmurings. The car must have attracted them out of their houses.
“Hello, good morning,” I mumbled when I got to him. I hated being in such positions.
“Good morning,” He flashed me a smile and I relaxed, my nerves calming down.
“I'm Kiki,” I pulled my hand out for a handshake which he took.
“I'm Pete.” He smiled at me again. “Mr. Giovanni asked me to get you.” He explained and I nodded, getting it. He pulled the car door open and asked me to get in. Slowly, I eased myself into the passenger's seat. He also got in and took the wheels.
“Now, according to the boss, you are late. ” He started as I fixed my seatbelt. I rolled my eyes.
“I still don't get what he wants me to do in the office at six AM,” I mumbled, rolling my eyes again. Pete chuckled.
“I asked him that too.” He said.
“Really?” I asked surprised that I wasn't the only blunt person.
“Yeah, I did but he got mad and asked me to leave. He doesn't like his decisions being questioned.” He pointed out.
“Look Kiki, I know you only just resumed. You only just started working for the big boss and you already have thoughts about him that are negative. Whatever it is, erase them.” He told me and I was taken aback.
“And why should I do that?” I asked, raising a brow.
“What I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't hate Giovanni too much. I guess If he starts to feel like he isn't doing enough, like he is in the wrong, it could affect him psychologically. He could be extremely paranoid. His background must have shaped him into a boss that is married to his work. He does nothing but tries to prove to_” Then, he stopped talking amidst my confusion.
“You know what, forget about it.” He mumbled. I was confused. How could he drop all those information on me and expect me to forget about it, just like that? Because I'm a freaking robot or what?
“I was hired two days after the boss arrived here. I found the job offer online and arrived for the interview in due time. Sir Matteo had strictly asked for me to leave so he could hire a more bulky and huge man on the excuse that he could defend them on rainy days.” He began again.
I felt my gut twist. What was it with this Matteo guy?
“I was sad but managed to put up an okay face so I could leave when the big boss sternly insisted that I would drive him. He told his friend that he wasn't looking for a bodyguard but someone who could get him anywhere in due time. He asked me to stay and gave me the job.” He paused smiling.
“Honestly Kiki, I won't lie to you. I enjoy driving the big boss. Sometimes, he cracks jokes that make it fun. He is a nice man. The best I've worked with so far. Only that when he wants his job done, he becomes a bit harsh.” He explained.
“So, in summary, you are asking me to take things easy with him?” I questioned.
“You got it. You are smart Kiki. I know you will get it right.” He mumbled and I nodded.
“You should get down and get boss's coffee here. He buys his coffee every morning from here.” He told me and I nodded, stepping down from the car.
Well, the boss seems like my present self. I wonder what more we have in common.
