Chapter 23
She felt pressure there!...
Sophia woke in the midnight pressed, but felt like a log of wood was pressing down on her abdomen, she stirred and whimpered.
Almost like a struggle for breath, she sat up and Jason was cuddled beside her with his left hand around her abdomen and she needed to use the bathroom quickly, having no legs was already an extra delay to her immediate need for relief.
She peeled his hand off from her but he didn't budge. She almost cried. She forgot to use the bathroom before going to sleep.
that was the only way she wouldn't wake in the middle of the night to pee because it was always a difficult task especially without the help of any of the maids.
Now Jason seemed too tired to even stir unlike him. he was always woken by the slightest of noise. Sophia didn't want to disturb him but had to or else she wouldn't make it far even to the bathroom door.
She pushed and pushed, So she smacked him heavily on the arm, he jumped pulling his left arm with him. Sophia was already filled with sweats. She didn't need to explain anything to him as she made her way off the bed carefully. Trying to pull the wheelchair closer, she was sure Jason watched her with fear and uncertainty in his eyes because she was breathing so fast and hard to keep from peeing on herself.
Jason sat up and watched confused. He uncomfortably watched her twist herself. He wondered what she was aiming at. Until he saw her reaching for her wheelchair then it clicked.
But he still sat there and watched her in pain struggling to get herself on the seat with her ragged breathing. He didn't know what to do. He didn't know if to ask if she needed any assistance. but he didn't know why she wanted to get into her chair at such an hour. "Is she having an attack?" He thought.
She managed to finally get on her chair but the pressure in her abdomen intensified and her feeble bladder could only hold on for a while. All wet and irritated to the core, Sophia shamefully rolled into the bathroom praying fervently that Jason didn’t see her in her worst moments and if only his memory of the incident would be wiped off. In tears, she felt so embarrassed and rued that he saw her struggle in pain to do such a simple act like peeing.
Realization dawned on him as he sat there watching the door she entered. He never even thought what little privileges he enjoyed, now snatched from her because of his carelessness and stupidity. He'd never for once thought how bad she had suffered from the injury both physical and emotional and maybe it was part of her nightmares. Jason thought with fear and regret. He couldn't bear the thought of what his actions did to her. he didn't deserve her in any way and she had never taken it out on him.
He felt repulsed for even finding solace in her. He jumped off the bed and ran out of the room, he felt suffocated all of a sudden. He ran to the balcony and inhaled the fresh night air. The tears dropped, which he tried so hard to prevent but couldn't. As he thought more about her, more tears followed and he didn't try to wipe them. At least no one was there to see him cry.
When she came out and saw the empty rumpled sheets, Sophia felt everything in her bowels rumble. She didn't expect him to care but she didn't think he'd just leave like that. Her embarrassment was doubled now if she thought then she was embarrassed.
"I repel him now," she thought bitterly. But carefully made her way back to her bed she lay there in thought and more pain in her chest. She didn't want to care about what he thought of her but unfortunately, the heart always chooses its part. She hated her situation and wanted to hate him more for putting her there but couldn't.
It was times like this that the thoughts of ending it came... Not once nor twice did those ugly dark thoughts occur. To just end it and be with her lovely parents and leave the harsh reality. But this time the thoughts were so heavy that she cried into her pillow for God to take her the next day because she had no balls to do it herself.
But she woke to the sun shining into her window and eyes reminding her that her prayers weren't answered. That she was still with the living.
Stan eventually came around that day but Sophia wasn't in the mood to talk nor joke around as usual.
Stan tried to get through to her but she wasn't letting him.
"I guess I'll leave you to it then," he said in disappointment.
Sophia stared at him with a sorry look "am sorry Stan am being impossible today. I just... Am just not motivated today, those thoughts you know?" She managed a sorrowful smile.
"But you weren't like this yesterday when we spoke, what happened? is it Jason?!" He asked, bitterly spitting Jason's name. He hardly referred to him as her husband unless he wanted to tease her.
"No."
"It's about him I know. nothing else could put you in such a depressed mood than the actual reason why you had to be here in the first place" he sighed. "I need a word with him."
"No Stan please, just leave it. I don't want to talk about it, he didn't do anything. I just... I think I assumed a lot. Just let it be please" she begged.
Stan nodded and tightened his jaw.
"Am always here for you okay even in the middle of the night you can call me up I swear."
She smiled at him and nodded.
"Can you stay over till evening I don't want to be alone, we can have dinner together Mh?."
"Sure I'd love that."
"Then you can tell me all about Jennifer at the hospital" she tried to tease.
Stan laughed hard and shook his head in disbelief.

He sat at the bar and downed his seventh glass of beer. He hated himself and wanted to drown out his sorrows the best way he could.
What was he thinking? That she would love and accept him all because they were now married and shared the same house. Or that she would easily look beyond the past and seek for better future with him. Jason scoffed at his thoughts.
While he was at it. A random girl he couldn't make out her facial features properly because he was tipsy, came along and sat beside him biting her lower lip and tugging at her elastic thin short gown which barely covered her thighs.
Jason hissed at her stupid cliché efforts at seducing him. Countless times girls had tried such an approach and he didn't find it bold or intriguing anymore. Unlike then when he craved the attention.
"Hey, Jay. Can I help you?" She twisted awkwardly on her chair.
He watched her for a while. "Yes you can" he slurred.
Her eyes lit in anticipation. And she drew closer to him.
"You can fuck off!!!" He yelled into her ear. She jerked in fear and disappointment.
"Mtchewww real mature of you" she walked off with her clutch purse.
He sighed in relief and continued his business.
Mason found him in the crowd and walked up to him. "Jay my man how have you been? I feel like you and Sean have been avoiding me for reasons I don't know. What's up?."
Shrugged "Nothing just the usual" he offered his drink to Mason who rejected politely.
"Thanks, so I haven't been seeing you around the club for a while now and thought maybe you've suddenly become a good husband" he laughed at his silliness.
Jason wasn't in the mood at all to speak with Mason and his silly mind. And Sean was pretty occupied with school and Miriam his newfound love.
"Can I ask you a question, Mason?" Jason turned to him.
"Sure, hit me."
"Did you ever suckle your mother's breast milk?" He asked with all seriousness, Mason paled.
"You must be shitting me, man, don't tell me you've also joined Sean to tease me. I know I have a bad sense of humor but you shouldn't rub it all over_" Jason interrupted him harshly.
"Then you shouldn't crack dead jokes at all, you leave it to people who can. Why do you always try to outdo yourself?" He sighed in frustration.
Mason nodded in realization a drunk and angry Jason was the worst side of him anyone could see. Mason didn't wait to be landed another round before he excused himself to see a friend. Jason scoffed tiredly knowing Mason had no friend anywhere. they all pretended to like him because of his and Sean's influence.
