DOUBLE TROUBLE WITH THE TWIN WOLVES 10
C H A P T E R T E N - - - T O M
They are fucking firing at us in a neighborhood! Roll the dang car and hide behind it, is that what you want me to do? Tom screamed as he yanked the wheel to one side, sending the large SUV careening into a turn with its tires groaning.
"I notice that. Get out of here as soon as you can, Tim yelled, turning in his seat to face Maddison. Madison, you should get down, along with the boys. The glass is bulletproof, but it doesn't last forever," he stated in a firm, composed tone.
Tom could not really understand how Tim was able to be so calm in this situation. They had not only found the person Tom was absolutely certain was their true mate, but she had children as well. Twins! Undoubtedly his and Tim's! The three of them were now being attempted to be killed, along with him and Tim.
Tom could feel the excitement pumping through him, buzzing in his ears, and making him feel as though he may erupt. He had always had a short fuse, and it had frequently landed him into trouble. Tom was the complete opposite of Tim, who was almost frigid in his calculations. They matched up between the two of them. But in this case, Tom was quite relieved that it was him and not his brother behind the wheel.
When he looked in the rearview mirror, he saw two identically massive black vans speeding in their direction, one of which had a guy hanging out the window with a semi-automatic rifle. Tom grimaced as he counted down the seconds till they could reach the motorway and forced the car go fast on the largely deserted route. In a neighborhood where children were playing, he didn't want to exchange gunfire. Although he had never liked it, it now felt far more risky than it had ever done.
Tim had his rifle ready and in his hand as he began to call Jerome on the phone.
Madison, sweetie, are you alright?
As the SUV roared up and over an overpass on its route to the busy highway, Tom yelled back, glancing at her curled-up form on the back seat.
“No! You believe I ought to be? " She responded, clearly shaking.
He smiled slightly and said, "Probably not.”
Even though everything was in disarray, a significant portion of him couldn't have been happier. For goodness' sake, they had Maddison in the car with them! Tom could ensure that they never let her go again since she was there with him and Tim, once again within reach. Without her, the previous year or so had been a total nightmare. Since then, he had not been able to force himself to touch another lady. Even the idea of being with someone seemed strangely like cheating, a concept he had never before struggled with!
What a decent woman's love is capable of doing for a wolf. If that hadn't happened to Tom, he would have never believed it.
A second barrage of bullets struck the SUV from above, pockmarking it from the exterior but failing to penetrate. The Firm understood how to construct their cars, so Tom had to offer them at least that much.
As Tim impatiently tapped his palm on the edge of his cell, waiting for Jerome to pick up, Tom observed, "Hemingway's going to be so upset when he learns about this."
"I believe he's going to be more upset when he finds out that there are people conducting open gunfights on the roadways in Sta Rosa Laguna and that we're engaged, fucked-up vehicle or not." Tim said jokingly as the call went through, "We're in serious trouble, Jerome. We are traveling toward the town on the highway. On our back, bogies. I need a secure setting. Yeah? Long tale, no. It's awful.
Tom listened intently as the brief dialogue was being made. The Firm had a few low-key housing arrangements and a few safe homes in several large cities, but those weren't options. They discussed it while they followed Maddison's trail out of Laguna and recruited other field agents to follow her until they could obtain a description and license plate of the vehicle she had gotten into. They had the good fortune to catch her acquaintance leaving the house, which allowed them to quickly determine where she may reside.
Tim and Tom both agreed that it would have been a mistake to bring her back to The Firm while they were still unsure of the situation. They wanted a location where they could truly speak to her without fear of being dragged away from them while this craziness was still going on. Hell, Tom alone had plenty of inquiries for Maddison, and he was confident that Tim could compete with him on that front.
Tim rolled down the window and flipped the cell into his pocket as he yelled, "Turn right at the city complex, onto the railroad."
Tim peered out the window while Tom held the vehicle still for a brief period of time, allowing Tim to fire a barrage of rounds at their new and unwanted acquaintances. Tim was too cautious to shoot anyone near to the vans, so the first three shots missed their mark, but the fourth one was a home run. Tim rammed one of the vehicles into the tire, causing it to explode with a loud crash into the other van and nearly throwing the gunman out the window.
That's what I'm referring to! Tim dragged himself back inside the SUV and pulled up the window while Tom whooped and patted his brother on the shoulder. Tom laughed as he changed lanes and vanished into the oncoming traffic. "You're not too bad of a shooter for a communications man," he said.
Tim sneered, reloading the gun, "Screw you too."
The infants were still curled up close to Maddison where she had been hiding them with her body when Tom said, "You may sit up now, sweetie." He was watching in the rearview mirror as Maddison sprang up on the seat again.
The tiny devils still weren't even awake! Tom was positive that they had to be his and Tim's if they were able to sleep through such a battle. It was never a successful effort to get one of them out of bed for a mission. He couldn't help smiling.
"Boys are sleeping soundly. Heavy seepers, huh?”
With a sigh and a brush to keep her hair out of her face, Maddison acknowledged, "Only when they want to.”
Tom's grip on the driving wheel tightened as he thought, "Damn, she's become even more attractive. "There was something about a lady who had a pup that made a shifter's heart race twice as fast, especially if those puppies happened to be yours. Tom licked his lips and expressed gratitude for the break. In an effort to understand his feelings towards everything, his mind was working nonstop. Any man, gunfire or no gunfight, would find it difficult to handle going from a devout bachelor to suddenly becoming extremely involved in a lady he thought he would never see again to becoming the father of two new tiny werewolves.
While pretending that they were just another car in traffic, complete with bullet holes in the car, he let up a little on the gas pedal and relaxed a little in his seat. Sooner or later, they would have to abandon the car, but they were more than capable of doing so. They had muscle memory for the specifics of a mission; everything just came naturally to them. But what about internal matters? That was a lot more challenging.
Tim blinked his eyes a little and thought about the lanes behind them before saying, "I think we lost them. "I believe we are in good shape, barring other cars that may be waiting for us. What then can we infer from this? identical men that we saw at the train? ”
The yelling fight that was going on in Tom's thoughts about Maddison and the babies was so loud and complicated that he chose to let this talk take the place of it. "Probably," he whispered. "I am unable to think of any other reason why someone would come after her. Or have you, honey, been up to mischief while we've been gone? He remarked, smirking into the rearview mirror, "I'd hate to hear that you've been having too much fun without us.”
Maddison gave him a glance, and he admired the flash of light in her eyes. She had been so frightened on the train, yet she had emerged through it like a champ, her head resting serenely on her shoulders. She appeared almost imperturbable once more, perhaps even more so than before. She had undoubtedly grown stronger in the about a year since he had last seen her, if he could say anything at all.
Maddison said, sounding a little annoyed, "No, I haven't been getting into any firefights, if that's what you're asking," but the small grin on her lips indicated to Tom that she was OK.
Why wouldn't she be? She was present with them, wasn't she? Tim and Tom exchanged glances as they both grinned slightly.
Spunky little creature, he mused with delight.
Tim scratched his chin and said, "I'm shocked they responded so soon, though. "I would have thought that it was a huge enough coincidence that we were present and watching the news at the appropriate moment, but the fact that these folks had operatives prepared to roll out quickly? I believe we're dealing with a tremendously huge person," he said carefully.
"But you know who it is, right? Not many alternatives, really... those jerks with the blue eyes? It's not the first time we've seen them," Tom said, his brow furrowing.
"I'm sorry, what? You believe you know who these men are, right? Then why am I not living with my parents in Quezon, but rather stranded in the suburbs of Laguna? God, oh God! Do you mean to suggest that there is a chance for me to resume living normally?" Maddison leaned forward and questioned, sounding out of breath, while holding onto Tom's seat's backrest.
He almost swerved into the next lane when her perfume struck him in the face like a hammer. He had to correct the automobile. She was able to quickly and effectively divert a man. With a wink and a touch, he might easily lose what little sanity he still had by losing it in her presence. He assumed that, theoretically, it wasn't the worst issue he might experience.
Tim answered, sounding as unflappable as ever, "It's not that easy," but Tom didn't notice how his eyes briefly flashed gold. The men we're dealing with in this situation are not a mom-and-pop outfit posing as terrorists. They have extensive training, preparation, and funding. There is no true method to get rid of them. Only if they lose interest in you or if they no longer value you will you be secure from them.
"I assumed that would occur after you guys discovered who they were. You and your... business. “
Tim said, "Yeah, I wouldn't put money on it. But let's not focus on it at the moment. Right now, getting you and the dogs somewhere secure is our first priority, agree? From there, we'll work everything else out."
Tim nodded to Tom after giving him a glance that reflected Tom's perspective on the situation. The Firm never had interests other than its own in mind. The fact that they had chosen to give Maddison a new identity in the first place was a tiny miracle; Tom and Tim had spoken about it frequently. The twins were interested in the position even though Tim had learned about it from sources outside of The Firm, which made them aware that there was more to it than what their bosses had disclosed. In contrast, inquiries were strictly prohibited when it came to The Firm, and any enquiring was treated with a prompt and severe reprimand. Since they knew it would only result in difficulties and give them more of a headache than they already had, they hadn't even tried to approach Hemingway with any questions. No one was looking for this, not even the twins. The level of Tom and Tim's involvement in Maddison's life was at an all-time high even with her and her two kids in the car.
Hell, maybe Hemingway would be interested in answering our questions if he unexpectedly loses two of his top agents because we had to leave to protect our partner.
The thought of it caused him to halt momentarily as he drove off the freeway. Mate. She did serve them in that capacity, didn't she? The one. It was the one they had been seeking for and the one their destiny had promised. And she has now raised their firstborn children as well. It was pretty much game, set, and match, and neither of them had really had a chance to even begin to convey how much it meant for werewolves to find their fated.
Tom shook his head, thinking, "Damn." Rapidly, this became messy.
Nevertheless, he couldn't have been more content.
There was no traffic at all to replace the busy, clamorous noise of the roadway. On the little side roads that wound through the railroad portion, they were essentially by themselves while being surrounded by box cars and stationary tanker trains. He observed Maddison tensing up as he glanced back at her in the rearview mirror and her mouth tightening into that wonderful worried line she had.
"Are you all right, sugar?" He heard a hint of tenderness in his tone and said. He hadn't thought he could even convey tenderness.
She placed her hand on one of the lads' backs and replied, "Yeah, I'm okay. You know about trains? They give me a little anxiety.
Tom said, "Can't blame you for that." "The damn things I never liked."
Tim simply grinned and scoffed. However, Tom anticipated that coming forward, he would like trains much more. Maddison had, after all, entered his life via one. They can't possibly be that horrible.
"Take a left from here and then a right again."Tim said. The roads were growing so tight and difficult to navigate that if anyone had met them there, they would have had to squeeze past each other like a bitch.
As the sun fell over Laguna, they made a few twisting bends that illuminated the city in a tri-color haze that seemed weirdly appropriate for the occasion. The huge doors eventually slid open in front of them and slammed shut behind them as they entered a secret subterranean parking garage, Tom's ears were treated to the sound of pneumatic locks latching shut. They had little trouble building a bunker wherever Jerome had told them to go.
He parked into a parking place next to a Hummer that was armored and something that appeared to be an Abrams tank, and with a broad sweep of his arm he said, "Home sweet home."
Probably because it was an Abrams tank. In the middle of Laguna.
Tom laughed and got out of the SUV, thinking, I adore our friends.
