CHAPTER 54 - THE HOSPITAL RUSH
Ben immediately carried Courtney on his arms but what he didn’t expect was the blood flowing through her legs.
“Somebody call an ambulance now!" Ben yelled seeing Courtney is not responding.
“Get her to the nearest room while we’re waiting.” Nathalia ordered Ben calmly.
Everyone starts moving on their own accord; Carlos and Arianna lead them to the guest room while Ben is carrying their daughter. Eric and Liliana bought took their phone they don’t care which one answer the call what matters is to get an urgent rescue. Nicolo and Nathalia followed Ben as he lay Courtney on the bed.
“Nic, get some napkin I need to stop the bleeding temporarily.” Nathalia told his brother who followed instantly.
“What is going on? Is Courtney going to me alright?” Ben asked.
“I don’t know yet Ben.” Nathalia ordered.
Nicolo moves as fast as he can and get the needed stuff, good thing he know what the napkin is otherwise he will panic just like Ben.
“Get me the towel fast!” Nathalia hollered.
“What can I do to help?” Ben seeks guidance since he doesn’t know what to do.
“Just stay by her side and watch her pulse for me, we need to monitor that until the ambulance comes here. I also need to call her Doctor.” Nathalia instructed him.
He followed and counted every second until the ambulance arrives to get her to the hospital. Ben kept calling Courtney’s name but she was really not responding, he cursed and scream because it seems its taking ages for the ambulance to come when they are needed.
“Ben, the paramedics are here.” Arianna was the one who called him.
"Hunny can you hear me, the ambulance is here.” Ben whispered to Courtney’s here.
“Signore please step aside so we can check her pulse and put her to the stretcher.” The paramedic kindly asked.
Ben immediately stood up to give way to the medical staff as he took out a small device and placed it on Courtney’s finger. He is not a medical specialist but he can tell it’s a pulse oximeter since his Nona used to have that device. It will measure the oxygen level of the person and how well oxygen is binding the red blood cells. The paramedic slides over the device to Courtney’s fingertip and automatically detected the rate.
“How far along is she?” The medical staff asked Ben.
“She’s exactly 9 weeks.” Nathalia answered for him and gave few medical terms that he definitely did not understand.
After it was connected, the staff used another equipment this time it’s the digital blood pressure device. He wrapped the cuff and it automatically inflated after the power button was turned on. The display screen began showing numbers that is easy to read even without manuals. Just by looking at the result, ben knew it was not a good numbers.
“We need to take the patient to the nearest hospital now.” The paramedics stated seeing the condition of Courtney.
It took only three minutes to transfer Courtney on the stretcher and rolled her out of the house while Ben is in tow.
"I'm sorry Signore only family can join her inside the ambulance." The medic stopped Ben from getting in the van.
"I'm her fucking fiancé for fuck sake!" Ben spat.
“Get in Signore.” The medical staff permitted him finally.
He rushed inside the ambulance without a care to anyone if he is decent or what. All he was worried and can think about is the unconscious woman he is willing to exchange life with just for her to open her eyes and tell him she is okay.
"Courtney please... please... wake up … hunny please." Ben keeps chanting.
It was like a forever road when you are inside the ambulance; every seconds count and every minute that passed is precious. It is the worst feeling that any person can feel seeing someone you love hovering between life and death.
“Please me she is going to be alright.” Ben looked at the paramedic who is watching him in despair.
“Your fiancée is a strong woman I can tell so she will make it.” The paramedics choose to say the safest word that any relative would want to hear from them.
“What about our baby?” Ben asked again.
“They are going to be fine; we just need to give them the right treatment.” The medical staff gave the best answer he can provide for the feared man in front of him.
After ten minutes’ drive, they reached the hospital and Courtney was wheeled directly to the emergency room.
“Let me in!” Ben shouted through the door.
“I am sorry you cannot pass this line.” The nurse blocked his way.
“Let the Doctor and nurses do their job. Your tension will just bring additional stress on them instead taking care of Courtney.” Eric dragged his brother to the corner to give way to the Nurses coming and out of the emergency room.
“Please fill this Patient information.” The nurse instructed.
She is holding a paper placed in a clipboard folder asking him to fill up the paper the he ignored to read. Ben seems to be out of his sanity so Mr. and Mrs. Montini did the honor and took the said paper.
“We will fill it up; we are the patient’s parents.” Mr. and Mrs. Montini came in and took the clipboard.
Nathalia head over to Carlos and Arianna to give information since she was with her on the Doctor’s appointment. They submitted the paper back to the standby nurse after answering personal details of Courtney.
“Oh God! Please let her be okay… I just got her Courtney back and I need her and our baby.” Ben plea can be heard by everyone.
“They will be okay bro just calm down.” Eric tapped his shoulder trying to calm him down.
“What if our baby didn’t make it? Oh God… I can’t lose them both.” He is still in panic mode.
“The Doctors are attending to them right now and they are doing their best so calm yourself down, they are going to be fine.” Eric soothed him.
“Your brother is right figlio.” Carlos called his attention.
“This is all my fault, I pressured her.” Ben blamed himself.
“None of us is at fault here because we didn’t know this will happen.” Mrs. Montini supported Eric.
“All we can do for now is pray and wait that the tests results.” Nathalia was right on that.
