Chapter 6
“Kathy!’ Kaden yelled as soon as he saw me. He dropped the ball he had in his hands and ran towards me.
“Kay!” I called out chuckling as he engulfed me in a big bear hug. “I’ve missed you. I’ve missed you so much” he mumbled against my shoulder. “I’ve missed you too Kay, I really have” I replied really meaning it.
Let’s get one thing straight, my brother can be a pain in the neck, but he does have his good qualities. And to be fair, we get along really well, when we are not fighting that is. I mean, he tells me everything, and I mean everything. He even told me when he had his first crush and his first kiss.
Come to think of it, I think the reason he refused to acknowledge our age difference is because he wants us to be really close. Now I feel bad for not visiting for three whole years. But, in my defense, I did call a lot.
Finally, he releases me. “Oof” I breathed out, Kaden had just punched me in the guts. “That was for not visiting for so long” he said as he stepped around me and entered the house leaving me there doubled over.
“Awwwww. That was sooo cute” Haley said. Oh, I had totally forgotten that she was there. She was still standing by the hoop.
“Yeah, sure” I replied as I stood up straight. I turned towards the door and she followed.
When we were inside, I walked towards the kitchen while she went to the living room. I really needed a drink, because I just discovered that my little brother packs quite the punch.
In the kitchen, I went straight to the fridge and pulled out a carton of orange juice and poured my self a glass. I opened the door of the fridge to replace the juice, and as I closed it, my eyes collided with deep blue eyes. Paige was standing by the kitchen island looking at me. No, it was more of a very intense stare. In fact, I felt like she was staring right into my very soul. I felt really uncomfortable, and my mouth felt really dry
“Hey” I managed to say.
“Hey” she replied. “I, um, I just wanted to get something to drink” she said.
“Oh, sure. Want some?” I asked pointing at my glass of orange juice.
“Sure” she replied. I felt her eyes following me as I got the carton of juice and poured her a glass. “Thanks” she said as I handed her the glass. Her fingers brushed the back of my palm and I can almost swear that I felt something. I don’t know what it was, but it felt really good.
I sat on one of the six stools surrounding the island, and she took a seat opposite me. She seemed to be studying me as I just sat there silently sipping my drink.
“Do you ever take those off?” She asked after a while. She was referring to my glasses.
Did I forget to mention that I am bespectacled? Well, I am. I was diagnosed with astigmatism when I was right and I have worn glasses ever since. Sometimes though, I switch them for a pair of contacts.
“Pretty much” I said in response to her question.
“You don’t say much. Do you?” she asked.
“Not really” I replied looking down at my glass of juice.
“Why” she asked. I could feel her eyes on me.
“Nothing, really” I replied looking up.
I saw she had finished her juice. I stood up as I gulped down the rest of my juice and walked around the island to get her glass and take both to the sink. As I reached out my hand to take her glass, she turned her head towards me, our faces were really close, so close that our noses were almost touching.
I froze as she caught my eyes and held my gaze. “Your eyes are beautiful” she said in a husky voice.
“Ummm…thanks” I said backing away. I went to the sink and rinsed out both glasses.
“You really don’t look anything like your sister” she said as I walked back to the island and took seat opposite her.
“You can say that again” I replied.
Let me explain. Katy and Kaden both inherited my mom’s blond hair and my dad’s hazel brown eyes. Katy got my mom’s short frame standing at five feet three inches. While, Kaden and I took after my dad in the heights department, with Kaden currently at five feet eight inches and still growing, and me being five feet seven inches with a really slim frame.
I however inherited my paternal grandmother’s wavy pitch black hair and blue-green eyes which sometimes looked more green than blue.
“Well, I like your eyes a lot” Paige said. “Thanks” I said. “I’m sure they will be wondering where we went off to by now. Come on, we've gotta go back in” I said getting up. “Alright” she replied following close behind.
“Hey, where have you guys been?” Katy asked as we entered the living room. “In the kitchen. We both needed a drink” I answered to taking the seat beside Asher.
I just happened to catch the look Katy gave Paige as she took the seat beside Kaden and Haley. I shrugged it off and sat quietly listening to the others talk about the upcoming wedding. They talked about the reception venue, the church, the rehearsal dinner, and even the dress fitting, while I just sat there silent.
