Chapter 17
Lily watched Liam take his phone to see who was calling but he had not made an attempt to answer the call. She was running out of patience and her heart ached as she dialed his line again for the second time but he didn't answer but made the phone ring till it stopped.
She took her pride aside and dialed the third time, and this time after the phone stopped ringing, he switched it off. Her heart broke into a thousand pieces as tears welled up in her eyes.
Dorothy and Stacy were taken by shock as they saw what Liam did. Liam would never ignore Lily's call, it was the other way round and although they wanted to tell Lily he might have his reasons, they couldn't because he could have excused himself and answered the phone to know if it was important or not.
Lily tried to act cool about it and ignore it but her heart wouldn't let it go and before she knew it, she was matching towards where Liam was with his friends.
Liam was surprised to see Lily in front of him and not with the best kind of attitude from her.
Lily clapped her hands as she stood in front of him. The girls and guys around him were surprised by Lily's action. They didn't know her and neither recognized her so it baffled then who she was and who had offended her.
Lily's eyes moved from the girl's hand on Liam's shoulder to Liam's face. Her head told her to leave and forget it but her heart told her to speak and for whatever reason, she knew not of.
"You refused to pick my calls, why?" She spoke, her voice lower than she expected but he could hear her clearly. It dawned on the others who she was referring to as her eyes were on Liam.
Lily felt guilty and he had not expected her to come here. He had bumped into Stacy and Dorothy but his mind didn't think of Lily.
He sighed, slowly took the girl's hands that were on his shoulder off before getting on his feet. He took his suit jacket that was at his side and he walked towards Lily. "Let's talk outside," he said to her.
Liam wasn't a fan of public argument or attention which was why he would take her to a place where they could speak privately and explain to her.
"Don't touch me!" She spat out, slapping his hands off her.
"Okay, I won't but let's speak outside." He said and she obeyed although she didn't want to.
When they reached outside, she folded her arms across her chest as she looked everywhere except for Liam. She was angry and her heart was beating faster than normal. Why did he lie to her and why was he avoiding her?" She asked within herself.
"Are you going to speak or what?" Lily asked not to look at him.
"I will speak but firstly you know you shouldn't have barged in the way you came. It was disrespectful." He said to her and she scoffed.
"Seriously?" She seems to be taken aback by his words. There was something different about Liam but she couldn't tell what it was that was different about him.
"Yes Lily. I was with people and..." She rudely cuts him off.
"Of course you were with people! Isn't that why you Ignored my calls? What was it that you were having with them? That's definitely not a business conversation because you wouldn't be having it in a club that is always loud and that girl beside you, who is she?" She asked.
She knew she had no right to ask but then she had already spoken before she could stop herself
Liam took his hands off his pants pocket to put his jacket on Lily as he felt the weather was cold. She pushed his hands off. "Don't touch me!" She spat out.
"Don't put your jacket on me. I do not want it. Only God knows who you've put it on." She snickered.
Liam sighed. He didn't know what exactly she was angry at him for. "What is it that makes you angry? What exactly is it that you are angry with me for?" He asked her.
She hissed. "You didn't answer my calls! Why!" She exclaimed.
"I was busy like I said." He replied and she scoffed.
"You have got to be kidding me. You were busy? Seriously Liam? You were busy? Busy with what? Busy doing what? And when have you been so busy ignoring my calls? Wow! Wow!" She wasn't sure of how to handle her feelings. She was confused and hurt and in conclusion, her feelings were mixed.
She was angry at him for so many reasons and she was fighting herself not to say what those many reasons were.
"Privilege right?" He said rhetorically.
"Privilege? What do you mean?" She asked him confused by his statement as the skin between her brows creased.
"I am never too busy to pick your calls. That's true but I was, which was why I didn't answer them." He said.
"Liar! Liar! You are such a pathetic liar! If I hadn't known better I would have believed you. You weren't busy. You could have excused yourself to answer it but you switched off your phone. You didn't even want to know why I was calling or if I was calling for your help!" She exclaimed. The tears she fought so hard to hold began to stream down her face.
She sniffled a little as she wiped the tears that seemed to have no end.
"I could have excused myself, but..." She cuts him off.
"Do not say it because it's gonna come with a lie." She said.
"I called you two days ago and you lied you were at work but the truth was you weren't. You were at home and I was outside your house." She confessed.
Liam was taken by shock by her confession. He didn't know she was outside.
"Shocked right? Okay that's not it all. You also lied yesterday. I saw you are in the supermarket too so what do you say about that?" She asked with a cracked voice. The tears seemed to have no end as they kept streaming as she spoke.
"Today I...I came here because Dorothy and Stacy said they bumped into you and..." She wiped her tears as she sniffled a little.
Her heart ached and it hurt her to feel this way. She never wanted to feel this way and had promised to never feel this way but now Liam was making her feel this way just like Chris did.
"I...I looked this nice for you but...I guess you didn't care about it."
Liam's heart clenched at her confession. He felt bad for making her cry as he never wanted to be the reason she cried but after what she said to him three days ago, he told himself to move on as she wasn't trying to give him hope.
He had promised to come see her the next day because he didn't want her to know her words affected him so much.
"I am not that important to you anymore right? You already have another right? What's her name?" She asked.
"You promised not to hurt me Liam. You promised to always make me smile always but now you seem unbothered and you are being rude to me!" she cried out.
"You lied about your location, you didn't answer my phone calls and what are your excuses? Tell me Liam!" She shouted.
His silence infuriated her more. "Fine! You want to act all innocent and dumb? Then it's fine! Don't you ever come look for me ever again! Don't you ever come find me in my house...argh!" She groaned frustratingly as she was starting to speak off.
"It's so annoying my heart won't stop aching! Listen to me stupid heart! You see it, he is not worth it." She said, hitting her chest.
Lily was one who fell in love deeply and when she does, she doesn't care about the repercussions but she cares more about pleasing the person her heart wants. One who didn't know would think she was drunk but truth was, she wasn't but was very straightforward when she was hurting.
"You know what...it's fine!" She said after a while noticing he wasn't going to say anything and not to keep saying words concerning her feelings to him, she decided to let go.
"Go back and do you. I will be fine." She said to him making an attempt to leave but he held her back.
She turned around to glare at him. "What? Why are you holding my arms?" She asked with an irritated tone.
"Three days ago you said something and I want you to clarify your statement." He said to her, confusing her.
She furrowed her brows in confusion as she stared at him. "What the hell is wrong with you! Let go of me! Aren't you too busy with whoever the people you were with?" She asked him.
"They can wait but they can't wait." He said stern and firm.
She grimaced. "Now they can wait? You have got to be the most unpredictable human being on earth! Well I do not want to speak to you! I do not want to!" She exclaimed struggling to get off his hold but he refused to let go.
After struggling for a while and thinking she had succeeded, he hugged her from behind, holding her tightly as she froze on the spot. Her heart began to beat faster than normal but this time, her heartbeat was not because of pain but for more than one feeling.
"Answer me first and then you will go. Three days ago, you said, ``Love wasn't something you wanted to give a trial and no matter how hard you try it, you don't think it's for you, what do you mean by that?" He asked.
Lily scoffed. "You are unbelievable!" She exclaimed.
"Why are you asking me such a question and what has that got to do with you and I?" She asked him.
"You might not have noticed it but that word made me withdraw from you. That was why I have been staying away as It seems you weren't going to give me a chance and I would be the one hurting in the end." He confessed.
Lily stopped struggling to get off his hold after hearing his last word. She had not expected him to keep what she had said in his heart. She had meant no harm and he had misinterpreted what she meant when she said those words.
"Wow! Wow Liam. You could have just asked me what it was I meant before taking stupid decisions!" She spat out.
"I meant another thing entirely and you thought I was referring to you? You are the dumbest man ever!" She spat out.
Realization dawned on Liam and he felt weak on all parts of his body. He shouldn't have concluded, he thought to himself but he did already.
"You also promised to speak to me the next day but you didn't and you didn't come visit so why did you promise?" She asked him.
"I'm sorry." He said.
Lily laughed out hysterically. "Be sorry for yourself Liam. I said those words but I never meant I wouldn't love. I love too much and it scares me and as much as I wasn't ready to give it a go, I was ready at the same time. Love hurts but that's why it's love because it comes with the pain. But it seems you took it the other way and decided to start hooking up with other girls right?" She made emphasis as she mentioned the word girls.
Liam chuckled. "There were no other girls and the girl you saw is a friend. Nothing more or less." He confessed.
She hissed. "Not as if I care." She rolled her eyes although he couldn't see her.
"But I want to ask you a question though," he said, making her curious.
