Chapter 7
Lily could tell something was going on with Chris as he had refused to look into her eyes while speaking to her all morning.
"Miss, the car is ready." Chris said to Lily, making her raise her brows in a questioning manner.
She wondered the reason for his attitude as they went to bed on good terms last night. She could tell he was distant and he has been speaking to her informally. At first she thought he was only doing that because of the people around but the fact that he just did that now when it was just the two of them confirmed her suspicion.
"Chris." She called just as he was about to close the door.
"Yes." He answered.
"What's wrong? Is there a problem?" She asked.
"Nothing." He said to her with a smile.
"What do I know you are lying about?"
He rubbed his eyes with a sigh that escaped his lips. "Well you do not know that, do you?" He raised his brows in a questioning manner.
She bit her lips as she stared at him. She could tell he was lying because he wasn't acting this way yesterday. The both of them were happy to see each other yesterday and he hadn't come to kiss her.
"Did you kiss me this morning?" She asked, her eyes not leaving him. He wasn't looking back at her, instead he was looking everywhere except her and that confirmed it again.
"Look me in the eyes," she said, her voice was low but loud enough for him to hear.
"Why?" He asked.
"Wow!" She shook her head in disbelief.
"This...this…" she face palmed herself, she couldn't believe he was acting up again when they just got together and it hurts that she was always the one trying, putting effort.
"You didn't kiss me this morning and you are definitely avoiding eye contact with me, so what do you call that Chris?" She sighed.
"It's nothing." He denied.
"Really?" She questioned.
"Really."
"This is sad." She licked her lips. "We were on good terms right so what happened?"
"The car is ready, you wouldn't want to delay right?" He diverted the topic, riling her up the more. She felt stupid for trying to figure out what was going on in his mind but he doesn't care and he acts like it is alright and it hurts her so much.
"You are such a fool!" She spat out.
"Fine." He said and that made her Moe infuriated.
Chris was doing all of this as her father had shown suspicious signs and he wasn't ready to lose his life yet which is why he planned on quitting and leaving before it was too late. He didn't want to break her heart but he knew he had to and he would have to do it in the most painful way she'd be able to move on and forget him.
He didn't want to tell her that her father called him and he asked him to find out the man who was in the heart of his daughter and that being him.
"You are unbelievable Chris! I thought we passed this. We were fine and you said so too. We smiled yesterday but suddenly you do not want to eat anything or have anything to do with me and it's sad and it hurts! Do you even care about me?" She asked him as tears welled up in her eyes.
She could tell they would start coming out of her eyes in no time and she wasn't going to stop him. He constantly hurt her knowing that she really cares for him and he doesn't
Chris' heart clenched upon the sight of Lily's tears. He wished he could wipe them off but all he was doing was for their sake and he didn't want her hurting in the end because she would surely get hurt.
His quietness ached her heart as it felt as if she was talking to no one. He made no attempt to say anything and that made her angry as he made it look like she was saying pointless things.
"Fine!" She wiped her tears that had rolled down her cheek.
"You do not want to say anything right then it fine. I'm done, I'm done with everything that has to do with you!" She spat out.
His heart broke from her words but he knew he had to act strong for his own self and herself. He knew they wouldn't work out but had gone against his head because his heart wanted closure. He knew she was better off without him and he knew that they would end up in pain if he tried to do it and in less than a week, things turn messy for the both of them and he deeply regrets giving it a trial when he shouldn't have and should have forced himself to close his heart.
He expected something like this and now he would man up and take all the blame. It was better she got hurt now than later. "Fine." That was his simple reply and that reply made her feel her eyes turn.
She almost choked as she found it hard to breathe. How could he be so calm and brutally heartless? She thought to herself. The pain she felt was evident on her face as vein lines popped in her forehead.
"Fine?" She gasped after a while.
"Fine?" She asked rhetorically, still trying to comprehend everything.
"Fine? You are fine with it! Did you just hear me? I said we are over. Done and dusted!"
"I heard you and I said fine." He managed to say calmly and she felt insulted by his composed self. She couldn't stop herself as she raised her hands to slap him right across his cheek.
He said nothing still and nodded his head which pissed her more. "You are a damn douchebag! You are a coward! You are..." She trailed off as she thought of so many words to describe him with. She couldn't believe her heart chose a man like him. Someone as nonchalant and uncaring as him.
She felt stupid for ever letting anything happen between him. She was just about to forget him and he stepped into her life again asking for a chance and like the fool she was, she let him in and now she was the one suffering the repercussions.
"I hate you so much!" She spat out through gritted teeth.
"Okay." He said and that made her angry and she raised her hands and slapped him again.
She raked her hands through her hair in frustration. Speaking to him was wasting her time and energy as he looked unbothered by her action, she thought. She walked away from him but not without hitting him with her shoulder.
He followed behind her and just when they reached the stairs, she turned around. "Do not bother following me, you might as well quit because I do not want to see your face ever again!" She pointed at him.
"Fine." He said. He was already planning to do that and she just made it easy for him to. His answer riled Lily up, she couldn't believe he was handling everything well and it hurt her to see he was doing well and she couldn't.
She didn't want to be dealing with him when she knew he would only make her heart ache by seeing her.
"I am going to pack my bags now." He informed her and she glared at him.
She was hurt but then it occurred to her that she told him to resign and he easily agreed to it and then he would be happy but she wouldn't.
"Am I that disgusting to look at?" She asked him with the thought that he might not like her face but she knew she wasn't ugly so why would he be irritated by her face.
"Are you intimidated by my social status?" She said, thinking that might be the reason.
"Did you hear my conversation with my father?" She asked again. Many things ran through her mind as she thought of the things she might have said and done to hurt him.
"Is it because of that?" She asked again once she noticed he wasn't saying anything.
"You are so unbelievable! What is really bad about my conversation with my dad? Are you angry I didn't tell him about us?" She questioned.
Chris was starting to feel uncomfortable as she was speaking openly and someone could be walking and hearing her and then it reached the ear of her father and he is being the most sought out for man by her father which he wasn't ready for.
"That is not it. I just realized we won't work." He answered and she scoffed.
"You are a liar and I hate you!" She spat out.
"It's okay." he replied and she groaned in anger.
"I do not want to see your face. You disgust me!" She spat out and he nodded his head.
He turned to leave and she stopped him. "I won't let you leave satisfied. Even if you drop your resignation letter, I would make sure my father doesn't accept it. You will feel pain working under me and I will make sure you hurt as much as I can, either emotionally, physically or mentally." She threatened.
She thought if she wasn't going to be happy, she wouldn't let him. Seeing that he was happily ready to leave made her angry and she thought of man's to hurt him back.
His silence irritated her but she decided to not let that hurt her as she walked away angry. Once she was out of sight, Chris sighed.
He walked back to the quarters where the servants and workers reside. He opened his door and walked him, walking towards his bed as she needed to clear his mind and head.
From the day he lost his parents, nothing ever went according to his will and when it went, it was only for a short period of time.
He fell down flat on his bed and he raised his hands through his hair. He thought of what he could do and how to go about it. He never had an alternative and at this point, he felt he missed a lot and didn't try to get to know himself much to know what he was capable of.
He got off from his bed and went to his computer. He decided to type in a resignation letter to send to Lily's father but then he thought of Lily's words and her father's reaction.
Her father had given him the job to find the man who was in the heart of his daughter and he was quitting a day later. He knew Anthony wasn't a stupid man and he wouldn't let him go unless he had a reason to.
He got back up from the desk and went back to his bed. He had so many suicidal thoughts going through his mind which he knew were bad yet he couldn't help it.
He felt he was in the worst situation and there was no way out.
His phone rang but there was no caller Id and that baffled him. Not anyone could easily get his number and to those who had it, they didn't give out his number without his permission.
He wondered who the caller could be and what they wanted from him so he answered the call.
"Hello, who is this?" He questioned.
"Long time no see sweetheart." A familiar voice spoke through the phone. He took the phone from his ear to look at the number again but he could recognize it.
"Who is this?" He asked again as the skin between his brows creased.
The person on the other side chuckled, a very familiar one at that too. "Ouch! I feel hurt. It's bad you quickly forgot everything about me Christopher." And then it dawned on him, only few called him Christopher, his full name.
"Camille."
