The hand removes from covering my mouth and I take a shaky breath as I turn to meet the eyes of the man who says they can save my son. I scoot back on the bed once I get an eyeful. His soulless black eyes cause a shiver of fear to run through my body. As his imposing size leans over me I clamp my lips shut from releasing a scream. The door suddenly closes, and I peek around him to see who has entered. Hope fills my chest for a moment thinking that it is my husband.
What I see causes me to quake in fear once more. This man is even bigger than the first. His shoulders cover the span of the door. Even though his eyes look like liquid gold the scowl on his face makes me feel danger.
“Wh-what do you want?” I stutter.
“Maximus stand down, you are causing her fear”
The Golden giant man says. At his words, the darker man moves from in front of me and goes to stand on the other side of the bed. The blond stays near the door as he continues to speak in hushed tones. “We are here to help Igneous. Taking him to Magma is the only way to save them both. If we do not they will both be dead” he says as he holds his hands us. The surrendering gesture does nothing to quell my fear.
“You lie. Your kind is what has done this to him. If I let him go with you then I will lose him forever. I can’t even get him to wake up now” I cry out in a whisper.
“I don’t have time at the moment to explain it all to you. Magma is on her way here and because you took him from her she has lost all control. If she makes it here then more than Igneous will lose their lives. Do you want the deaths of all the people in this house to be on your hands?” he questions me in a harsh whisper.
“How can you blame me? I have done nothing wrong but rescue my son from your dangerous group. We do not need your help. Doctors who have seen this before will be here soon to help him.” I say with all the false bravado I feel.
“That lawyer who says he know what this. He is a part of a secret organization that experiments on my kind. Your son is showing signs of being one of us because of the bond he holds to Magma. If they take him then surely he will die, and your husband has already agreed to this fact. You know that you sensed something odd about how he and Mr. Edwin were acting when they took blood from your son” he reminds me.
My mouth gapes open and shut unsure of what to say now, I did notice something odd about their exchange. My husband was never happy about Igneous being here. However to me he was the happiest accident of my life.
“We don’t have time for this Xander, show her. Soon his people will be here, and I need her permission” The dark man says from the other side of the room.
“Ma’am, if we wanted to hurt you we could have done so by now. If you allow me to hold your hand for a second I can show you proof of what is killing your son” The gold man says as he steps closer.
In my confusion, I hold my hand out as another option fails to come to me. When he grasp my hand I immediately notice that his skin is much warmer than mine. Shocked at the feel of it I meet his gaze. His eyes have gone from still liquid gold to a flowing river. As they begin to glow the world before me disappears.
I visit my youth to see Antonio. I smile as the first boy I ever loved fills my vision and the love I felt for him flows through my bones. I see the moment that Igneous was born. As I am reminded of all the joy and love I felt when I first held my son, the feeling inside me intensifies. The vision changes one final time and I swim in a liquid pool of gold that magnifies this feeling of love time an infinity.
As the room of my son comes back into focus I gasp in elation at the feel of what he showed me. My vision returns to his now still golden eyes, and I look at him in wonder. “That feeling you felt at the end was the love your son feels for this woman. It is that same love that is killing him to be away from her. We must go or they both will die” He says sadly.
I pull my hand from his and touch my cheeks to realize they are covered with my tears. As I pull them from my face I see that they have slight tinges of gold in them. I smile knowing that they are happy tears. “Take him to her, you have my permission” I say as I rise from the bed.
The dark one who for some reason I no longer fear rounds the bed. He steps in between all of us and hold out his hands. “You are coming too. Once your husband realizes Igneous is gone, your life will be in danger. Grab my hand” He commands.
I place my hand in his as the blond grabs his shoulder. The other hand of the dark one grabs a hold of Igneous’ leg. I watch as the man’s eyes close and suddenly we are in a sea of black as small rays of color start to flash by. My stomach lurches at the movement and I fight to hold in its contents. Then suddenly everything comes to a still and we are suddenly in the forest. I jerk my hand away from the stranger and run the few steps I can before lurching the contents of my stomach onto a stump of the tree.
“Sorry I forgot how humans can react to being moved like that” The dark one says near my side.
“Are you okay?” he ask leaning into my peripheral vision.
“What the hell was that?” I spit out through my dry heaving. Still feeling sick to my stomach I stay hunched over near the tree in case I need to throw up again.
“You all call it teleportation. Anyhow, I only have a few minutes to brief you before she gets here. I need you to stay near one of us at all times and if things get to be too much we will have to remove ourselves” I stand tall and look at him curiously wondering what he means.
“What Maximus means to convey to ma’am, is that we don’t know exactly how this will go. Magma and Igneous are the first of our kinds to find there mate. We know that the symptoms he has are in response to the withdrawal that he feels from being away from her” the giant blonde says.
I turn in his direction to see that he has laid my son on the ground in the wildflowers that grow here. I move to go to him, but he blocks my path. “I’m sorry but I can hear Magma in the distance moving this way. We need to stay away from him to prevent ourselves from being attacked. At the moment her beast is in control. We know that she won’t hurt him because he means everything to her just as I showed you. The same rule will not apply to us if we stand in the way” He says leading me to the edge of the trees.
I watch as my son lays so still in the grass. From the distance I can see how rapidly his chest moves. I find solace in the fact that I still know he is breathing. I truly hope that something will happen soon to save him. I also hope that I made the right decision in bringing him here to these people.
