Chapter 36
Sewa opened her eyes slowly to the blurry faces of her friend Denny and younger sister Lolade.
At first, she thought she was seeing things until her eyes completely opened and she saw them. "Sewa, can you see me?" Lolade asked with a hint of worry laced on her tone and concern expressed on her face.
When she had come back home, she was surprised to see her older sister lying on the floor looking lifeless. She screamed as she squats down to see if she was still breathing. Tears began to roll down her cheek as she wondered what to do, she took her phone out of her purse and dialed her mother's number before she looked around for her sister's phone to dial Denny.
She cried as she shook Sewa lightly begging her not to die. Although she acted as if she hated her sister, she would never wish her sister died.
Sewa groaned lightly from the pain she felt on her head and body before recalling what had happened to her.
"Ola please don't go! Ola please don't leave me! I'm so sorry! I love you, if you leave me I will die! I've given up everything! I am no longer a prostitute!" She spoke on top of her voice as she went after him, her heart beating really fast and her head pounding.
Just as he left the door, she missed a step, her eyes became blurry as she suddenly felt a heavy pain in her chest, then she collapsed.
Tears streamed down her eyes as she recalled it making Lolade and Denny wonder what had happened to her. "Sewa why are you crying?" Denny asked with concern. It was rare to see Sewa cry, Sewa never cried no matter how tough the situation was for her.
"Sewa what's wrong? What happened!" Lolade asked with a hint of frustration laced on her tone. She wasn't used to seeing her sister breaking down. In Fact it was always Sewa to carry them all no matter how tough it was and now that her sister was helpless in front of her, she couldn't help but worry.
A drop of tears rolled down Lolade's cheek as watched her sister cry out. She didn't know what was baffling her and that was what made it worse.
"Sewa speak up na! Why are you crying? What happened that you fainted?" Denny asked her. They were all worried yet Sewa said nothing.
All Sewa thought of was Ola and she wished it was all a dream. The words he said to her pierce through her soul like a two edged sword. You are just a liar and a prostitute! Those words kept repeating in her head.
It was as if she lost it all in a day, she couldn't think straight, she looked at the white wall opposite her as if looking for an answer from it but she was getting none.
I hate you! Her heart shattered into a thousand pieces as she remembered those words. She cried out loud, her Ola was gone. He hated her and it didn't sit well with her.
He was the only one that made him feel she wasn't a damaged girl whenever she was with him but now he hated her and wanted nothing to do with her. Her heart ached as she placed her palm on her chest, trying to control her raging heart.
Both Lolade and Denny looked at her with worry, her silence and tears were killing them. They wanted to know what had broken her to this level but she wasn't speaking.
"Sewa speak up!" Denny begged. "Sewa tell me what is wrong, maybe I can help you, please speak!" Denny's voice was pained.
She had come to really love Sewa as her sister because it was Sewa who had helped her the first time she was forced to sleep with a man.
Denny didn't know her parents, she was taken by Madam Sandra from the village with a lot of promises to train her and take her to school but that was all false. Madam Sandra brought her to Port Harcourt and turned her into a prostitute.
She cried and cried when she was first given to a man. She refused to sleep with any man, she didn't want to but it was Sewa who had slept with the men in her stead.
Sewa had gone to meet her the next day to console her, she cheered her up and told her to come find her whenever she needed help.
The first months, Sewa slept with the men she was supposed to sleep with so that she wouldn't and that made her love Sewa and promised to help her no matter the situation in life.
"Does this have to do with Ola?" Denny asked, making Lolade curious. She wondered who Ola was and what he had done to her sister. Her curiosity drove her insane as she planned on killing him if he was behind her sister's despair.
"Speak up Sewa!" Denny spoke. Sewa loud tears cleared Denny's doubt. "It's him right? What did he do to you? What did he say?" Denny asked her.
"Who is Ola?" Lolade asked. She wasn't finding it funny at all as he stomach clenched. She clenched her fist as she thought of the things she would do to him.
"Did he break up with you?" Denny asked in a whisper, unsure if those were the words she should use at a time like this.
Sewa cried out loud again. Her heart breaking into a thousand pieces as she remembered his last statement before he left her; Our fate ends here!
"Denny!" She finally called, the tears streamed down without control, she couldn't believe it. It was as if she was dreaming and now reality had dawn on her. "He...he..." She choked on her words as her chest kept heaving. "He is..." She couldn't complete her statement. It was as if her chest was being burnt and no matter what she did, she couldn't get rid of the pain.
"Who is Ola!" Lolade exclaimed in anger. "What does he have to do with this! Is he one of the men she pleases!" Lolade spat out with anger.
Denny took in a deep breath. She now knew why Sewa would suddenly break down easily. She knew how much Sewa liked Lanre. She knew how much he made her smile no matter how tough she acted.
She remembered the first time she met him and how he was affectionate towards Sewa. Sewa had never given men much attention but she gave Ola and even when she advised Sewa against the relationship, Sewa said she wanted to give it a try but wouldn't make it complicated.
"Ola was her boyfriend." Denny stated firmly shocking Lolade.
"My sister had a boyfriend? Or you mean men she pleases?" Lolade asked. She couldn't believe her sister had a boyfriend and if so, what had he done to break her down.
"Lolade, your sister had a boyfriend. One she really loved and he didn't know she was a prostitute. I guess he found out and ended it," Denny replied, clearly not in the mood to think of the situation.
"Wow! I am so going to kill that bastard!" Lolade spat out. Just then, the doctor came into the room.
"Doctor, is everything okay?" Denny asked.
"Yes, everything is okay but I must warn you to be very careful with your present condition," the doctor said to Sewa.
"Condition as how?" Denny asked with concern.
"Does my sister have HIV?" Lolade suddenly blurted out before realising.
Denny frowned at Lolade's statement. The doctor chuckled lightly, "Not that. I mean she's seven weeks pregnant!" The doctor said.
