Chapter 37
Lolade choked then she hiccuped. She thought she might have heard the doctor wrongly, so she asked him to repeat what he said.
"She is seven weeks pregnant," the doctor stated firmly, just then a loud sound got the attention of everyone in the room.
Sewa's mother had just come in that time with food and drinks for Sewa only to hear her first daughter who was just 21 years old was seven weeks pregnant. She dropped the food on the floor as she glanced at Sewa and then the doctor.
Sewa heard pounding on her head as if the witches in her village were attacking her. Tears streamed down her face from the message she just heard. It was as if karma had come for her; one drama to another without giving her a break.
"Doctor you mean my daughter is pregnant?" Sewa's mother asked, wanting to confirm again. Her heart sank from the word.
"Sewa is pregnant?" Lolade asked rhetorically as she raked her hands through her hair.
The Doctor watched them all with confusion as they kept asking him a question he had answered over three times now. "That being said, she needs to be extra careful and she must not take any drug during this period, if she feels any pain, she should visit the hospital. I will leave you all to talk," The doctor said leaving the room to give them privacy.
Denny inhaled and exhaled, she kept trying to breathe properly as the issue on ground was an unforeseen circumstances. She wondered who the father could be but she knew it wasn't yet time to start asking Sewa.
Sewa held unto the bed sheet as she cried out loud. She felt like dying and not waking up. Pregnancy was the last thing on her list, she never expected it.
The silence is the room was deafening and awkward. None of them tried looking at one another's eyes. Sewa felt numb, she wondered why she had to go through all this trouble now.
Sewa's mother picked up her food from the floor then she walked towards Sewa with it. She passed it to Lolade to hold, while she sat down on the bed beside Sewa then she wrapped her arms around her.
"It's okay to cry, I am here," she said to Sewa. Sewa's eyes met her mother and she felt pain instantly. Everything was ruined in less than a week, her life came crashing down and she couldn't do anything about it.
"It's going to be fine. Cry out all your pain, do not hold any because I am right here to console you," her mother said to her.
Lolade also went to sit down beside Sewa then she wrapped her arms around her sister, consoling her with words while Sewa cried till her heart couldn't take it anymore.
It's been two days since Sewa returned home, two days and she refused eating but was forced to because of the baby. The past two days felt like hell for her, no matter how hard she tried, memories of what Lanre said to her haunted her.
Whenever she slept, she'd dream of her last encounter with him and the painful words he uttered. She hadn't opened up about the baby father and her mother wasn't forcing her as they knew with time they'd know.
Denny opened the door to Sewa room, she heaved a deep sigh once she saw Sewa was lying on her back with her hands placed on her stomach while she looked at the rolling fan in the ceiling.
It was painful for her to see Sewa this way, completely broken and too quiet for her liking. She crept towards her, thinking of words to console her with.
She sat down on the bed, then she spoke, "The world hasn't ended you know? I know it's normal for you to go through all these pains considering what just happened to you but you know you don't live for yourself alone?" Denny turned to look at Sewa who had a bland expression on her face.
Sewa made no attempt to say anything nor did she switch positions. She was just as she was when Denny came in. "Sewa, you have a family you take care of. You can't just let it all go because of someone who couldn't look at you the same way he did when he knew nothing about you? Let him go and you shall be free."
"I don't know what really went down but now you are pregnant and I am very sure you know who the father is right?" Denny asked but Sewa said nothing.
That didn't stop Denny from speaking, "Sewa, he is gone. You left it all for him so that you could be with him but he left! That's enough! He isn't worth any of your tears!" Denny wasn't having it anymore. The more she thought about it, the more it pained her and the more she wished she could see Lanre and give him a piece of her mind.
"You are wrong," Sewa finally spoke after days. "Denyefa, you know nothing," she muttered.
"Really?" Denny scoffed. "I know nothing? then tell me something!" Denny flared up. "You think if you stay like this for months, it would make a difference? Don't even try that because you are only burdening yourself!"
"You have a mother to take care of, do not forget she isn't fully recovered. You have a sister who is about to graduate soon and money is needed for her practical! You have a younger sister in the USA and guess what, she needs money or else she'll have to quit! You worked hard for your family to have better lives so now you are going to let it all go down the drain!"
Denny got up from the bed, she placed around while placing her palm on her head, she pointed her index finger at Sewa. "You are going to be a mother so you better start acting like a thoughtful mother! I do not care about anything but you have to get back on your feet!"
"I wish I can but I just can't!" Sewa voiced out. "I just don't know where to start from! I caused all of my pain and if only I had stayed away, I wouldn't be in this misery!" She cried out.
Tears welled up in her eyes but she wouldn't let them fall, she was tired of crying. For days she cried silently and it killed her within. "I...I cause it all Denny. He asked me, he wanted me to open up sooner but I didn't. I kept hurting him yet he loved me! I can't blame him at all because he had every right to!" She shouted.
"It's all over now Denny! He hates me and no matter how much I try not to think about it, I just can't! It haunts me and each time I try to sleep, I see his face!" She cried out loud, the vein on her forehead was visible now. "It hurts, my heart hurts!" She held onto her chest painfully.
Denny heaved in a deep sigh, "You will heal and that's a fact. But you need to get back on your feet because you have no one to depend on other than yourself. You can start anew and change it all but for you to do that, you have to be strong." Denny advised.
"Who is the father?" Denny asked.
Sewa knew very well who the father was, the last time she had sex was seven weeks ago and that was when she met Tunji for the first time as Lanre's brother.
Lanre was the last man she had sex with. She hasn't slept with any after their fight at his house that day. When the doctor had told her of her seven weeks pregnancy, she quickly did the math in her head and once she realised who the father was, that led her to cry out more.
"Ola," she muttered.
"Wow! Just wow! Are you going to tell him?" Denny asked but Sewa shook her head no.
"Why?" Denny asked.
She couldn't bring herself to see him anymore. She couldn't bring herself to speak to him, she couldn't bring herself to find him because he meant every word he said to her that time.
He might even deny it so she didn't want to tell him. She will train her child and astonish for her crimes by being the best mother to the child; that way she is indirectly asking Lanre to forgive him and amending her ways.
"I am here for you Sewa." Denny walked up to her and wrapped her arms around her.
"I will wait for you to open up at your own time and if you don't want to tell him, that's fine."
