Chapter 41
Sewa groaned in pain as soon as she placed her feet on the floor. She had forgotten that her ankle was sprained.
She clicked her finger as she tried to endure the pain she felt when her feet hit the floor. She exhaled then got off her bed.
She stretched her arms, then covered her mouth with her palm as she yawned. She looked at her wall clock to realise she had just fifteen minutes left to get to work.
The fact that water must not touch her bandage worried her, how the hell would she take her bath without water getting to her leg. She cursed yesterday within herself as memories of Lanre resurfaced.
She was glad she met him yesterday but not at the same time she was not. He was really cold yesterday and he said hurtful words to her.
She thought she had moved on and was ready for everything but seeing Lanre just proved she hasn't. Everytime she looks at her daughter, she is reminded of the beautiful memories she had with Lanre.
She does her very best to give her daughter everything she wanted, so as to atone for her sins against Lanre. She does her very best to be the best mother, to be a better role mother for her daughter so that she could forgive herself for hurting him.
She wondered how his life had been all these years. She didn't hear from him nor saw him, it was as if he blocked her from every aspect of his life.
Although she expected all of that, she never expected to bump into him in a situation like that yesterday. She shook her head removing every thought of Lanre from it before leaving her room to take her bath.
She walked downstairs to go and fetch water from the well. Before she reached the bathroom, there were two ladies and one man waiting outside. She heaved a deep sigh once she saw them.
Residing in a face me I face you building can be depressing as everything was shared amongst the people. "Good morning Sewa," one of the ladies greeted her and she smiled in return.
"Ada good morning," she replied.
"I'm surprised you are here late. Normally you should have left for work, what happened?" Ada asked her before noticing the bandage on her leg.
"My sister, many things happened but God will take charge," Sewa replied.
"What happened to your leg?" Ada asked.
"Small accident last night but I'm fine, Glory be to God," She replied.
Once the Tricycle parked in front of Sewa's work, she paid him and came down. Just as she rushed into the changing room, she bumped into her supervisor.
"I do not recall telling you to come to work late, so what brings you here at this time?" The supervisor asked sternly, making Sewa heart beat rapidly.
The supervisor was very strict, he wouldn't spare a chance to punish anyone of them if they didn't do as told. The only person who could escape him was Farida, she talked to him till he begged her to leave him alone.
One could hardly get angry at farida as she could make someone who is angry, happy. "I'm sorry sir, I..." She trailed off as she pointed her leg to him. He noticed the bandage on them and heaved a sigh, "What happened?" He asked.
"A minor accident, I promise not to come late again," she pleaded.
"Okay, get to work," he said leaving her alone.
Farida had shouted when she saw the bandage on Sewa's leg. "Who is that bastard!" Farida exclaimed as she took a closer look on Sewa's leg.
Sewa heaved a sigh, Farida deserved the title for the most dramatic queen ever, she thought to herself. "It was an accident, he took me to the hospital," she clarified.
Farida scoffed, "And so? What if you had lost the ability to use your leg? All these Lagos drivers, they need to go back to driving school," she uttered.
"Sewa, please take the order from table five," The supervisor said to Sewa. She dropped what she was washing to go and attend to the customers. Just as she reached the table she greeted, "Good day sirs," she greeted. The men were still looking at the menu as they did not raise their heads up.
She waited for some seconds before they replied, "I would like to have ofada rice with roasted chicken and plantain," One of them said. The other man was still looking at the menu, just as he raised his head to say his order, his eyes met with a familiar one.
Sewa friendly face were replaced with a shocked facial expression. Her heart began to beat faster than normal, she was starting to feel uncomfortable.
Lanre squeezed his brows as he watched Sewa, he was shocked, so shocked that he asked himself what she was doing here.
"Lanre," his friend had called his attention as he tapped on the table. "What do you want?" He asked.
His friend was the one that had decided to take him out and spend time with him but now his friend was confused as he watched both Lanre and Sewa's shocked facial expressions.
"Do you know her?" His friend asked.
Lanre shook his head, "Where will I know her from? I don't not know her," he denied, making Sewa frown. Although she couldn't blame him for denying her, she felt hurt by his words.
"Give me coconut rice and beans and fried chicken," Lanre ordered.
"Okay sir, which drink?" She asked. She was so uncomfortable that she couldn't bring her head up to look at him, her mood was sour.
As much as she didn't want his earlier statement to hurt it, it did and now she felt like trash in front of them.
"An ice tea and bottle of water will do," his friend said to her.
"What about you?" She asked Lanre. Lanre noticed she wasn't looking at their face and if annoyed him. "Can I see your face while speaking to you?" He requested and she lifted her face up for him to see.
He clicked his tongue, "Your customer service is bad, you know? I expect to see a smile on your face while serving me, right?"
Sewa forced a smile into her face but Lanre wasn't satisfied. He felt the urge to make her so sad as he was. Whenever he saw her face, all he could think of was how she deceived him for long with her fake smiles.
"That's it. After all you know how to fake smiles, right?" He asked with a questioning brow.
"I will have the same as him," he said, ushering her to leave his presence.
