Chapter 42
As soon as Sewa left, Lanre couldn't help but wonder why she was working in a restaurant. He was baffled within him, he also wondered why she was living and working in Lagos now.
Although he didn't want to mind, he just couldn't help it. "You seem to have an interest in that waitress or what was the chat all about?" His friend named Bidemi asked.
Lanre chuckled lightly. "I do not have an interest in her, I am just conscious of everything," he replied.
"The Lanre I know doesn't talk much. You don't even want any situation that would make you speak to a woman for more than two minutes, right?" His friend asked.
Lanre shrugged, "Maybe so, maybe not." Sewa came back with their food, as she placed them on the table, Lanre couldn't help but notice how her hands shaked.
She was nervous serving them. She didn't want to make any mistake as she didn't want Lanre to insult her anymore. Once she was through, she left the table, making Lanre eyes follow her trail.
"You seem to be looking at her, is something wrong?" Bidemi asked.
Lanre shook his head before placing a spoonful of food in his mouth.
After a while, he and Bidemi engaged in a conversion but his attention was taken away when he saw Sewa serving a table full of men and how she was smiling brightly.
He frowned. He wondered what they were talking about that made her smile. He suddenly began to think of many possible things in his head as he watched her speak to the men.
They seem older than him and her which made him jump into conclusion that it was her way of seducing them after all she loved older men.
Probably she was secretly giving them signal to find her if they needed her, he said within himself.
Or maybe she started to work here to get customers for herself, what a shameless girl she really is. He couldn't help but frown as he looked at her. He knew he had no right but he felt betrayed by her for speaking to them.
"Is something wrong?" Bidemi asked, noticing Lanre's mood. He couldn't help but think Lanre and Sewa might know each other. "Were you even listening to me?" Bidemi asked snapping Lanre back to reality.
"I'm..I'm sorry. Was lost in thought," Lanre apologized.
"Really? You were looking at that waitress with annoyance, did she offend you or what?" Bidemi asked.
"Not really, I need to use the restroom," Lanre excused himself, getting up from his seat.
While he was coming back he bumped into Sewa. He smirked, he thought of it as a perfect opportunity to make her angry as she has made him. "Well, well, well, so how many numbers have you collected today?" He asked, taking Sewa by shock. She was confused by his statement.
"Numbers?" She asked with a hint of confusion evident in her tone.
"Acting dumb as usual Jasmine James," he clicked his tongue as he shook his head in disappointment. "You are forgetting I know you and I know what you are capable of. Those men earlier, they are your type right?" He asked.
Sewa's heart broke when she heard his statement. They were hurtful, a drop of tears rolled down her cheek and Lanre shook his head in disgust. "Crocodile tears indeed! You are good at acting. Isn't that how you got me to almost kill my brother?" He asked rhetorically.
"Isn't that how you got me to almost cut ties with him all for the sake of love?" He chided. "You are something else to be honest. After all this years, you are still shameless, I don't even know why I am..." Sewa cuts him off.
She was tired of him accusing her although she couldn't blame him but he needed to stop dragging her back to the past that almost killed her. He didn't know what she went through and she knew she couldn't blame him after all she made him lose the trust he had for her.
"Stop all of this." She said firmly. "If you want to insult me, then do it outside of my work and not here."
"Wow!" He clapped his palm, "You are not even going to deny it at all?" He clicked his tongue. "Obviously a girl who would fuck more than one men for money wouldn't care, right?"
Sewa felt offended by his statement but she knew there was no way she'd be able to change his mind about her. "Suit yourself. I have work to do," she said trying to walk past him but he pulled her back making her lose her balance as she cried in pain because her sprained ankle moved a bit. "Ouch!" She cried out.
"I'm so sorry," he quickly said once he noticed he had dragged her wrongly. Sewa lifted her legs up as she cried out. It hurts so much that she couldn't stand. If it wasn't for Lanre's hands around her, she wouldn't be able to.
"I totally forgot," he said with a hint of concern laced on his tone. Sewa was taken aback by his tone. She never expected him to feel bad or speak so nicely to her. She felt at ease hearing that voice she had craved for a long time.
Lanre soon noticed she was quiet and realised the situation, he let go of her, making her lose her balance but she didn't fall. "Hypocrite!" he spat out.
"You acted as if you were hurt to get my attention? What a bitch you are," he spat out pointing his index finger at her.
Sewa said nothing to him as she watched him watch her. He was angry, he expected her to say something but she didn't. He couldn't help but think something was wrong with her because she was so different from the Sewa he knew.
Sewa wouldn't let someone hurt her for so long but so far, all he had been doing to her did not faze her and it pained him.
"I know you don't want to hear it but I owe you an apology and I'm sorry." That was all she said leaving him standing at that spot for a while as he thought of many reasons she had apologized.
He felt angry that she had managed to get into his skin once more. He was angry that she had once more made him feel soft even though he didn't want to.
"I hate you Sewa!" He muttered, clenching his fist before going to join his friend. "What took you long?" Bidemi asked him.
"Just needed to clear my head," Lanre replied. Just as he drank his ice tea, Sewa came back to their table upon Bidemi's request. As she spoke to Bidemi regarding his order, he couldn't help but notice her features.
She looked thinner than before. Although she wasn't fat before, she was thick skinned but now she looked different. Her face looked rough and her skin wasn't as shiny as before. He suddenly glanced at her lips hole she spoke and couldn't help but want to feel them against his.
He shook his head upon that thought, mentally scolding himself. You are supposed to hate her. She is nothing but a manipulative woman! He said within himself.
"Thanks for your patronage," Sewa said before leaving the table.
He didn't want to know anything but he felt something was different about her.
