Can't outrun the Mafia
Evelyn stared at Xander’s back who continued moving ahead as they entered the airport. As promised, he approved her decision of opening the new hotel chain in New York but not only that, he even agreed to come along with her to visit her hometown.
Her heart swelled. She should be happy isn’t she but unfortunately, she wasn’t. Instead, she was scared for Xander. Evelyn had an intuition that she would be sooner expecting a very strong reaction to their growing friendship.
Scared and nervous, her eyes kept scanning her surroundings checking for any signs of danger while she trudged through the crowd. Xander had booked their tickets in advance but he kept their visit a secret from their companies as per Evelyn’s request.
She already had one snake in her company who as soon as would come to know about their reconciliation, would deliver this message to her Boss like a loyal dog. But the problem was Sara might not be the only one. Dylan was a Mafia Boss so he must have many spies wandering in the city even in her company to keep an eye on her. That’s what had her worried but Xander assured her. He took the help of cops and right now they weren’t alone instead a group of officers was accompanying them and helping in clearing their way.
Evelyn was shocked when Xander told her about this. But she decided to keep quiet because too much interrogation might offend Xander. But the fear of Dylan never freed her soul, not even for once.
“Hello Ma’am,” one of the female staff greeted Evelyn. She also nodded at her with a smile. Xander then took the tickets from her and looked at her.
“Let’s go.”
Evelyn nodded and they both forwarded their legs to board the flight when a large group of men dressed in black suits appeared out of nowhere and circled them while two of them blocked Xander’s path. Xander glared at them and was about to counterattack but was stopped by the senior officer, Michael who immediately stepped in.
“What’s the matter?” He asked those men but his brows squeezed together as their eyes were not on him but on Evelyn.
Evelyn squirmed under their heated gaze. She looked at Xander for help when a man suddenly appeared beside her startling her.
“Hello Ma’am, I am Hunter. You need to come with us.” He spoke politely and bowed to her.
His straightforward words left her shaken. Evelyn looked at the officers who also had question marks on their faces.
She then let out a nervous smile and took the tickets from Xander’s hands before showing them to him.
“I have my tickets. You’re mistaken-”
“You don’t need to board this flight, Madam. Boss has sent his private jet for you.”
‘WHAT!!’
Evelyn’s eyes widened; her limbs paralyzed in shock.
“B-Boss?” She asked even though she was aware to whom they were referring.
“Mr. Black, Madam. I hope it clarifies your doubt now.” Hunter answered her cleverly not mentioning his full name.
Evelyn gulped dry. She looked at Xander through her peripheral vision only to see him fuming. She shook her head in a negative afraid that he would again misunderstand her.
But Xander wasn’t angry at her. He was prepared beforehand. He knew that Dylan wouldn’t let her leave with him and would pull up such a stunt.
Xander took a furtive glance only to see those men equipped with loaded guns. They had come prepared and even managed to pass the security check. Xander wouldn’t lie as he got a whiff of the Mafia’s power but he can’t back down and let him win.
Xander signaled at Michael who nodded at him and then wormed his way into the crowd to approach Evelyn.
Evelyn jumped when Xander snatched the ticket from her hand and stood in front of her blocking the view of those armed men.
“You see these?”, he said and waved the tickets in front of their eyes, “She is coming with me, not with any stranger so scram!!” He tried to intimidate him but Hunter wasn’t a bit fazed.
His soft expression instantly morphed into a cold one as he looked at Xander with hard eyes.
“We have the orders from her husband so technically you’re the stranger here Mr. Knight. Moreover, I think the cops must also not advocate you but instead boot you out.” He answered plainly.
“YOU-”
“Is that true Mr. Knight?”
Before Xander could retaliate, Michael stepped forward with a skeptical look marring his face. Xander looked at him but eventually, his eyes fell on the other officers who shared the same look. They were doubting him.
“No, it’s not.”
“Are you sure about that?”
Xander shot Hunter a death glare as he kept cutting him in between. But ignoring him, Hunter shifted his eyes towards Evelyn who stood behind Xander with a blanched face.
He strolled towards her and handed her the phone. Evelyn’s gaze oscillated between him and his hand.
“Boss wants to talk to you, Ma’am.”
Evelyn opened her mouth to refute but stop after hearing his last words which come off as a warning.
“It is important for your friend’s life.”
Hunter spoke the last words in a hushed tone. Evelyn clenched her fists when he flashed her an evil smirk and gestured for her to pick up the phone.
Swallowing her rage, she snatched the phone from his hand and brought it near her ear.
“How dare-”
“Get inside the jet, Eve.”
A deep rumble had her heart jolted in fright. She clutched the phone tightly, her jaw clenching in frustration.
“I won’t. I am telling you to leave me alone, is that so difficult for you?” She lambasted him.
“And I am telling you to climb into the jet I’ve sent for you. Is that such a hell of a task for you?” Dylan spat back.
Evelyn closed her eyes while exhaling loudly. But she can’t lose her temper, she needs to handle the matter carefully.
She took a sharp breath before speaking, “Listen Dylan. You need to put a stop. Enough is enough. Don’t force me to blow your cover. Just step back and stop meddling in my matters.”
Evelyn was done being nice. She can’t let him turn her into a puppet just because he is a gangster. And why would she keep hiding his secret when it has become a noose for her? She would eventually blow it up and shake him off.
So, she tried to scare him but sadly it didn’t work.
A frown etched on her face as she hadn’t expected Dylan to chuckle when she was literally threatening him.
A vein popped in her forehead, “What’s so funny?” she spoke with clenched teeth.
Dylan continued laughing, “Your theories sweetheart. How do you even come up with such nonsense? What even makes you think that you can get rid of me? I am your husband, Eve.” He spoke the last part in a mocking tone.
She scoffed and raised her head, “Yeah a husband who bought me from my parents. What was the bidding price, Dylan?”
She spoke in a fake saccharine tone and make a thinking face. Dylan’s laughter instantly died down.
“Get in the jet, Eve.” He snarled, the humor was long gone now.
“Ahh!! 50 billion dollars. I remembered.” Evelyn chirped ignoring his growling and continued riling him up.
“You want me to job your memory more? Wait.”
“Five seconds.”
“Huh?”
Evelyn was busy annoying him when Dylan suddenly said something that left her terrified.
“I am giving you five seconds, Evelyn Black. Get in the jet or I would raze the airport to the ground.”
Her eyes widened in horror. She couldn’t believe her ears.
“Heartless monster. H-How can you claim so many innocent lives? Is human life that invaluable to you?” Her lips quivered as she was on the verge of breaking down. Dylan had killed so many people in the past, blasted buildings murdering Ryan and Miller. It wasn’t his job to punish them and now today he was casually talking about blasting a crowded airport.
Dylan smirked triumphantly. He finally played his final card knowing very well that she can’t disobey him now.
“Oh, is that so? Fine then let’s try something new today. Since you despise violence so should I send Xander to jail for abducting my wife?” He spoke dramatically. Evelyn turned pale in response.
She looked at Xander who was already staring at her with furrowed brows. Turning back, she moved away from him while clutching the phone tightly with her trembling fingers.
“The cops would never favor a Mafia? Whom are you trying to fool huh? The moment I tell them about you, you will be behind bars so don’t use these tricks on me.” She gritted but Dylan again chuckled in response.
“How naive you are my sweetheart? If you’re still holding onto a string of hope that you can sneak right under my nose and I wouldn’t come to know about it then I request you to open your eyes and get a reality check. Look at Hunter for once.” He told her.
Evelyn was puzzled but still she obeyed him. But what left her baffled was that Hunter already had his eyes glued on her, perhaps waiting for her to take a glance at him. Extending his fist, he then opened his right palm. She looked down and found his ID card.
“Detective Hunter Colt.”
The blood in her veins froze. Evelyn was appalled realizing that Hunter was a cop who was working for Dylan.
Her mouth turned dry. She was trapped.
Dylan smirked at her silence and decided to share the details.
“Hunter is Michael’s son whom Xander had trusted for his protection.” He rasped and let out a sigh.
“See, Eve. Xander can get the protection of the police from anyone but that excludes me as they work under me. Hunter works as an undercover agent and his Dad knows it. So, Hunter is actually in a legal profession so don’t even think of him accusing as a goon. He works for me but what adds to your worry is that his father used to work for Dad which technically makes him obliged to work for me too. So, tell me can you stop Michael if he gets orders from above to arrest Xander for kidnapping my wife?”
Evelyn stayed rooted on the spot. The ‘above’ he stated was directed to him only.
Dylan was right though. She underestimated him. He is way beyond powerful. No wonder is the Mafia Lord of America. He is basically the ruler of the country no matter in which city she resides, he can get to her and the power he holds, she knew he wouldn’t even let her seek refuge in another country.
Evelyn felt caged. She realized that she indeed holds no right to decide for her life. He would keep threatening her and no matter how much she rebels, at the end of the day, she has to surrender for the sake of her loved ones.
Xander panicked when he noticed her shoulders that were slouched in defeat. He understood that Dylan again blackmailed her and she dropped her weapons.
“Eve!!” He yelled and tried to run to her but was stopped by Dylan’s men.
Dylan smirked when he heard his voice which was laced with concern.
“So, what’s going to be your call, wifey? Are you coming or not?”
